Our plane was delayed and we arrived very late at the airport (1:30AM). We were met by a driver recommended by John and Jeanne, the apartment's owners. He greeted us warmly and brought us to the beautiful Apartment Sarah, where we were greeted with a bottle of wine, some pasties and a refrigerator stocked with breakfast foods. It was 2:30AM, we were terribly jet-lagged, but we knew we were home!
The sparkling-clean apartment had plenty of room for the two of us - mother and daughter, both of whom need space and privacy. It also has air- conditioning, great windows with views and cross- ventilation.
My daughter slept in the loft while I slept on the amazingly comfortable full (or queen-size) bed that is created by pulling out a drawer from under the couch (this is great....I want to buy one for my house, too). Other things I want to buy include the fabulous N'espresso coffee-maker and the milk frother/foamer. We had great coffee!
The kitchen is adorable. Everything's there for serious cooking, too. We'd considered taking a market tour with John and Jeanne's friend and author, Carolyn Banfalvi, and then cooking up our goodies, Hungarian-style but we ran out of time.
The apartment was well-located, although both my daughter and I are directionally-challenged and never quite figured out which way to turn when we left the apartment. No matter. Nothing was very far. And, when we did get a bit dis- oriented, we strayed into lovely places. The owners had left little map cheat-sheets by the door for us, so we could place them in our pockets and always find our way back home. I'm sure those cheat-sheets work for most people but I've gotten lost in Brainerd, MN (pop. about 223).
Some suggestions: The apartment has wi-fi and it's great. It also has a Mac mini, which was hard for me to use. When I return (and I will), I'll tote along my own laptop and, perhaps, cell phone.
I'm going back! I loved my new home in Budapest.

| This was our first experience with a rental apartment. I don't know how anything could top it. The owner provided information in great detail before we travelled which made our visit most enjoyable. We stayed in Belle which was delightful--very accessible, great location and very clean and well appointed. We never used mass transportation and saw everything! Having the internet and international phone were a real bonus. Being met at the airport by Aljois and greeted by Ilona (the manager) made us feel right at home. When looking for apartments on the vacation rental website I was drawn to this one because of the US connection. Communication was a breeze. We would return tomorrow! |

This place was great and filled with maps, recommedations, movies, ipod players, just about everything that you would have at home. We rented both apartments for a long weekend and everything was perfect. We will be staying again. Thanks for everything. |

| This was the most wonderful apartment! Fruit, bread, desserts and wine were waiting for us when we arrived! Apartment is well appointed, and within walking distance of everything. Owner anticipated all our needs and wants. We couldn't have been more pleased! We couldn't have been happier in the apartment and would gladly recommend this one again. He was available whenever we had any questions. Having a computer and telephone to the USA was a special treat. The ambiance added to our enjoyment. Thank you for the opportunity to stay here! |

To make it short: make it long(er) as originally planed, your stay in Budapest. It's a really nice apartment direct in the heart of the city and as soon as you will have understand the system of doors and keys there will be no obstacle for having a wonderfull time in Budapest.
Thanks for all ! Martin |

| our stay at the apartments belle and sarah was probably the best time we ever had in budapest. the location could not have been better. we rarely had to use public transportation because almost everything we needed was in walking distance. the apartments themselves are very charming and well stocked--everything you need is there (umbrellas, blow dryer, chess). the nespresso machine was a godsend. we had a group of seven and it was the perfect size for us (one more person could have fit well). my only caveat is that the place is so cozy and cute that you won't want to get out and see the city. one of the best parts of our trip was lounging around in the morning, eating a leisurely breakfast. i can't wait to go back. and yes, the beds were comfortable. |

| The Sarah apartment was absolutely fantastic. I recommmend this for anyone who is staying in Budapest. The apartment is well appointed, clean and centrally located. In fact, the location could not be better, there is no need for cabs as everything is within walking distance or the train station is 1 block away. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Budapest! |

| What an incredible place to stay in Budapest! We stayed in Apartment Sarah, which is a beautifully renovated flat in the one of the nicest - and most convenient - neighborhoods in the city. The apartment had every amenity we needed, and the information provided by John was thorough and very, very useful. I'd say that having such a great base from which we could explore the city really made our trip what it was. My only hesitation when it comes to recommending this place to others is that I fear the apartment won't be available next time we go to Hungary! |

Just a note to say how much we totally loved staying in Sarah along with our travel friends who occupied Belle. We wanted for nothing our entire six day stay. John & Jeanne are the absolute best when it comes to anticipating someone's needs when staying in Budapest. We loved the building and the surrounding neighborhood and getting all four of us into the elevator provided many laughs especially when returning from a late diner with drinks. We are already planning our next trip to Budapest to visit family and hope that one of the 3 apartments will be available for our stay. Its not exactly home but pretty darn close, thanks again for all you did to make our stay so comfortable |

We are ending ten days in Budapest exhausted from the cold and excitement that surrounds this world class city. John and Jeanne are unparalleled hosts - as hosts they almost provide the service of a B & B based on the first welcoming call from them in Paris! We recommend you thoroughly read John's website - there is no greater guide to Budapest. Each traveller has their own objectives - but on a museum note: Applied Arts - beautiful but sparse collection; the Ludwig equals the Tate in London. Food - go with John's recommendations. he knows food. Around the corner is the Amstel River Cafe - good for late arrivals. Food is cooked fresh and wine/beer on tap is pretty good. Read the tour books here. We plan on returning soon with friends, confident our stay will exceed the comfort and welcome this one provided. There is no one like John. He is a true New Yorker. We are always available for questions.

What an amazing apt! We felt at home straight away. After a long and tiring day after flying into Budapest, it was a much appreciated surprise to find wine and pastries and groceries in the frig! The location is fantastic and all your helpful tips were great. We will definitely recommend this place and city to all of our friends. It is so much better than a hotel! Already thinking of coming back.

Budapest is much friendlier than Prague. We had a great bus tour today and the guide was an elderly lady who was very sweet and accommodating. We felt the people of Hungary are open and accepting. We went to several shops and they gave great service and were very helpful. Your apt is over the top. Nice taste. Good interior design.

Here to do a video documentary on a Japanese artist, I was able to use the backdrop of the apt. to capture my subject in the lovely light that graces this jewel box place. This space is not only tremendously comfortable and cozy, but now can be used for making films on my recommendation! So much to do, I must return to adventure in this lovely city. It has been an absolute pleasure staying in your comfortable and well- situated apt Sarah - our home for 5 nights - and also having the opportunity of dealing with you in all of the planning for our first trip to Budapest. Enjoyed an organ concert at St. Anne's church and saw a wonderful performance of the ballet Giselle at the jewel box of an opera house. The primary joy of our first visit to Budapest, besides this great apt. and the Szechenyi Baths, is just waling and admiring all of the incredible architectural detail - really lovely. One final word on the apt - if anyone is trepidacious about sleeping on the sofa bed they should not be! It is wonderfully firm and comfortable and easy to set up. Also loved the espresso machine, and the 2 bathroom basins, and the mobile phone. the washing machine also came in handy.

Too many thank yous to count - you made the final days of our honeymoon truly special. From having a driver pick us up at the train station after a terribly long and hot train ride - to having a working washer and dryer to wash our well-travelled clothes. Your recommendations were priceless. Better than any guidebook! Some of the highlights - sitting at the fountain on Margaret Island. The memorial of shoes representing those who were shot into the Danube during the Holocaust. Very powerful. Friday night services at the Dohany Synagogue. Even if you are not Jewish a very moving experience. Our countless meals at Gerloczy and Cafe Bouchon. The goulash at Bouchon is a must! Relaxing in the apt. drinking espresso and playing Uno. THANK YOU! We will recommend your home to everyone we meet.

We had a wonderful stay in Budapest and your apartment had so much to do with this. We loved the location and it was the best-equipped apartment we have ever seen (and we have seen a lot). Thank you for introducing us to Salaam Bombay and Gerloczy Kavehaz, the beat breakfast in town. Your informative website is unrivaled. We will certainly stay with you again on our next trip to Budapest (which will be soon). Thanks for a great few days in Budapest.

Went to the Gerloczy twice -- chocolate souffle to die for, food good too, prices very good. Felt like a local at Jeg Bufé. One we fould on our own -- 'Alfoldi Vendeglo' at Kecskemet utca 4 -- had a very good veal roast for two, excekllent local food and paprika. Scomnes were fresh out of the oven.
Had a relaxed time with a little sightseeing at the en d. Walked and taxied around. Phone was a great help and VOIP also was a great convenience.

Dear John--
Thank you so much for my opera tickets to Verdi's 'Il Trovatore.' It was a real delight! The singing and acting were great and the set very amazing. You really should go and try it out - I really do recommend it. Thanks also for the train tickets for it was such a real help. As to the book STRICTLY FROM HUNGARY by your dad, I was laughing so loud that my mom and dad thought I was crazy. My favorite chapters were 'Molnar,' 'Playwrights,' 'The Eulogy,' and 'The Duel.' Too bad it's no longer in print, it's a real gem!

Dear John & Jeanne--
We have never felt more 'at home' in a foreign city as we have here the past couple of days in Budapest. Once could not find a more centrally located and accessible flat! Thanks for your gracious hospitality and for thoughtfully taking care of all the details in furnishing and provisioning your wonderful flats. The 'Belle' allowed us the experience of 'living' in Budapest -- not visiting while staying in a hotel -- and I think this made our time here much more memorable and special.
For future guests,. John is not kidding around in recommending BOUCHON CAFEW near the Opera House. And our seeing Tosca and the Hungarian State Opera House was incredible! Balcony seats are a bit warm in summer months, but check it out -- you'll never forget this operahouse -- truly amongst the finest in Europe! For those taking the waters, forget Hotel Gellert and go to the Szechenyi Baths in City Park -- much nicer and tourists -- you'll feel more like a 'local' We love Budapest and are incredibly ikngtrigued by its faded yet promising opulence and the wonderful cultureand friendly people. Again, many thanks to our hosts!

Budapest was all we had hoped forr. Like a savory stew the city bubbled happily along, revealing scents of its history, culture, food, streetlife and music in tantalizing puffs and spurts.
Bits of its complex and painful history were waiting around every corner to be revealewd. It is a city to be discovered and walked.
We found the Jaobs book long historical introduction (Budapest, Granta Books, 2006) to be most helpful. Do read it about four or five days into a weeklong visit. It reveals the complex development that ties the rich and fascinating city together.
For us, the highlights were the music and the architecture. It is especially interesting to get to the out of the way venues as well as the obvious Music Academy, New Concert Hall, and the Opera House. We especially enjoyed an intimate string quartet (the Kodaly) playing in the Bela Bartok House museum and its gem of a collection of his belongings.
The architecture speaks by irtself. The walking tours are the only way to appreciate how intricately different and epoch-revealing the different buildings are.
Finally, we loved the Ecseri flea market (actually much more than that). It is a jumble of artifacts and, frankly, junk that reflects every element of Budapest and Hungary. Saturday is best. The pickers are finished by 9:00 am so we would urge getting there no later than 7:30am on Saturday morning.
The apartment was wonderful. There is no better location from which to explore B udapest. And one clould spend a week just learning how to make all the electronic gear work. Suffice it to say that there is virtually nothing that one could possibly want of modern technology that is not provided for.
Suggestions: --For coffee a functioning drip or grind machine [John adds: addressed since then by the addition of the Nespresso system strongly recommended by these guests.]; --instructions on how to work the computer [John notes: since added]; --a consultation from an adolescent on the phones
Other than these minor points, Congratulations! You have done a terrific job and helped make a memorable trip!

We were pleasantly surprised to find such a lovely apartment in the center of the city. It has more than what we need to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
As for the city, we recommend the 3-day tourist pass for getting around on public transportation.
For dining, we like the Central Kavehaz and Restaurant Club Pirro, both within walking distance. And for culture our favorite was the Magyar Concert - Hungarian State Folk Ensemble at the Palace of the Arts.
Thank you and we hope to return to Budapest again.

There was some protest in the streets, people with their flags in front of the Parliament, politicians between past and future speaking and speaking. At the same time we met other people - some angry, some poor, some disappointed... There is some crisis, between the golden autumn light and all these wonderful, corners, places, houses, and streets, we see problems difficult to solve. We hope Hungary will find a way despite this. So, having this little "apartment-island" above the problems, we have to say: Thank You. Everything inside was OK, we had a good time.

And John, your helpful hints about courtyards, shopping, groceries, sites to see - were all great!! I had several wonderful meals at the Gerloczy Cafe and loved it. I had a great meal at the Vafe Vian after the symphony (which I also loved, but they sure need ventilation/air in there!) and a good meal with horrific service at the Soul Cafe on Rady utca. Thanks again for making me feel so welcome. ... PS a few more hangers for the wardrobe would be a really good idea [John notes: We've added them.]

Thank you so much for the lovely accommodation. The location is beyond ideal and the facilities, atmosphere and recommendations are extraordinary. We visited for a 50-year (1956-2006) homecoming for my mother-in-law and had a very special time. One word of advice – maybe include a section on how to change fuses in the compendium of instructions. We blew one and felt guilty about calling for help about fixing it. [John: Added. But never feel guilty about calling; help is what we’re here for!] Wonderful hospitality. We’ll recommend the place to anyone who wishes to track to Pest – or even Buda!

Dear jeanne & John- It was a pleasure to be in Budapest, especially in your perfect apartment. The warm welcome with pastries and Hungarian food and wine set the right atmosphere for a few wonderful days in Budapest. Also, we followed your restaurant suggestions and found all places as reported: very good! We hope to be back very soon!

Dear John & jeanne- Your apartment is very well decorated, very cosy and so well located. We really enjoyed dloing the main walks of Budapest as recommended by Andras Torok. The baths were some kind of a cultural shock and we had a lot of fun in the Central Market. Thank you for letting us be your guests at the Bartok concert. Although we are not classical music fans, we truly enjoyed it.

The apartment is brilliantly set up for comfort. We stayed here during a late July heat wave and found the air conditioning wonderful. Lots of hot water, brilliant bathroom plumbing, cooking facilities totally adequate to our needs. Wireless internet connection let me email my holiday photos home, pick up feed of National Public Radio. Washing machine easy to use. Even lamps are in the right place to provide ambient or task lighting. Budapest: The Gerloczy Kavehas, five minutes walk away was our default place to eat in the neighborhood, with careful service, good food, the best breads and cheeses in the area. The little café downstairs [John adds: turn left as you go out the door, 2 stores down] has fantastic sour cherry strudel. Worth a try. [John adds: try their cheese croissant as well.] John’s restaurant recommendations are excellent but work best for adventurous eaters up for new ways of preparing goose liver and duck breast than for timid souls seeking something familiar to Americans (there are enough McDonalds & Burger Kings on the Vaci utca for them). One addition to his shopping suggestions: there is a fruit stand at Deak ter with very fine (if slightly pricey) produce – just past the McDonald’s at Deak. Activities: We highly recommend the Gellert Hotel for thermal and sulfur relaxation and the artificial waves in the outdoor pool (arrive at ten minutes to the hour for maximum fun and excitement). We also recommend the Fine Arts Museum at Heroes Square (Hosek tere). At 11:00 Tuesday-Friday there are gallery walks in English with explanations from three English and American docents – the Museums Italian collection was closed for re-hanging when we were there, but the German/Flemish collection is first rate as is the Dutch genre collection on the second floor, and the Spanish rooms featuring El Grecos, Velasquez and Goya. An unheralded joy.

Dear John and Jeanne- This apartment is wonderful. We found everything new, exciting, and comfortable. Our daughter remarked, "This is way better than any Marriott!" A very cute and elegant shop named Hampel katalin gave us our most satisfying purchase. The Gerloczy Cafe lived up to its reputation. We especially enjoyed the jazz harpist who played there. The apartment was in a great location. We had access to everything. It was great.

Dear John, Dear Jeanne- We had such a great time here in Budapest. The apartment is absolutely lovely. After some careful study we even succeeded in making the coffee machine give us espresso and the washing machine to wash our clothes. All your tips were great and we enjoyed the "manual" very much. Although we did have quite the adventure going to a hospital (emergency room) to get foot x-rays after a fall, it all seemed manageable after all because there was still so much to be seen. The Metro gave one the opportunity to see the ends of the city. The trams are real fun and easy once one builds up the nerve just to jump in in the hope that it will be the one one thinks it is. Thanks for the great conversations over coffee and dinner. And the introduction into the wonderful world of klezmer (and Budapest).

To John & Jeanne- Thanks so much for giving us the pleasure of staying at Apartment Belle. We were very touched with the wine and pastries - thank you again! We totally agree with your review of the Cafe Gerloczy -loved it so much we went there twice!! (Also loved their harpist!) Because of the heat wave we could not complete all of the walks listed in Torok's book, but still managed to see most of the major 'tourist' sights. We particularly loved the Opera House and were sorry we were not here during the season. When we think of Budapest, our memories will be irrevocably tied to Apartment Bele! Again, thanks for all your information prior to our visit - we were very touched by your generous sharing. PS - Thanks also to Ilona - a wonderful manager!

M. Farago- Thanks for everything. You have a very nice apartement. We had a wonderful time in Budapest. We travel a lot in Europe since 15 years and your apartement is one of the best we stay in. After London, Krakow, Budapest, we continue our trip to Bratislava - Vienna - Munchen - Prague and Paris. We leave the old continent the 22 of August. For now Budapest and Krakow are our two favorite places we visit. Bye-bye and I hope we will come back in budapest.

Born in Canada of Hungarian parents I have long wanted to make it here to see my “roots”. I was not disappointed and I think my husband, pleasantly surprised. We rented a car because we were going out of the city to see relatives and my parents and grandparents backgrounds – but to drive in this city is NUTS! We’ll do transit next time!
We had some wonderful meals & wonder why we can’t find anything like this at home – some locals tell me I can – I will look harder. The apartment was/is perfect – I will suggest only a few more clothes hangers in the closet [John notes: we added them] & some space on shelves for t-shirts, etc [John: arranged.] We are delighted we came and delighted with our accommodations! I hope to return in the not-too-distant future with our boys in tow – we’ll narrow our adventures – we tried to see too much too quickly. We took the recommendation of a prior visitor and had dinner at the Karolyi Palace – in the courtyard – wonderful –We were also introduced to a restaurant in the Buda hills – Bajai Halaszcsarda and I can recommend this as well.
John – your favorite coffee place was a delight while we waited through a storm. All in all a great & memorable trip – (a special trip for our 25th wedding anniversary) & we will be back. John & Jeanne – if you have not been – go to Tarcal [John adds: in the Tokaj wine region] – the Grof Degenfeld Castle Hotel – a highlight for me.

John & Jeanne- Thaanks so much for making our stay so memorable. John's writings on Budapest, e-mailed to us before the trip were extensive, thorough, and touched on all the important aspects that a visitor needs to know. Food waiting for us at the apartment (yummy pastries, milk & other assorted items) made us welcome straight away. Your touches like the WiFi phone, cell phones, adaptors for American plugs to Hungarian sockets made our stay enjoyable and pain free. Thanks a million for all your help! When our daughter walked into the apartment and saw IKEA furnishings her comment was, "John rocks!"

Budapest – and Budapesters – are wonderful; the apartment ideal. To come back to such a nice place made our constant exploring all the better. Some recommendations beyond the really helpful orientation handout: the restaurant in the courtyard of Karolyi Palace, just about 100 yards beyond Ferenciek ter (turn right out of the apt., walk about 8 minutes). We had a wonderful dinner there. Least worth visiting: Buda: perhaps we missed the lovely corners, but the main spaces, if elegant, were tour-bus-land. Absolute must: visit the baths! – Szechenyi Baths in the park were a great day out. ----- Thanks for everything.

This was my first trip to Europe and John's apartment and suggestions made it a fantastic vacation. Thanks for the beautiful apartment. To the next guests, see as much of Budapest as possible, enjoy the wines, and end the trip with a visit to the local baths to relax.

Thanks to John for a truly fantastic location in the heart of Budapest. The pastries we found in the apartment were wonderful, and the guide to the sights and the restaurants were invaluable. I recommend to all that they skim a few chapters from "Strictly from Hungary" for a feel of the Hungary of old. Finally, a note to the travelers on the night train (or at least those without sleeping cabins) - each cabin on the train seems to have cars of varying comfort levels (the seats, the temperature, etc). Choose wisely when you first get on the train.

John & Jeanne— To be your first guests, we are very honored. The funny truth is that I was very skeptical about “the situation” that I thought my husband was getting me into. Andrew told me that we were staying in some old apartment building, and I nearly freaked out, but decided, “what the heck”, it was only for three nights. Needless to say I was pleasantly and happily surprised to find out how fabulous it truly was or is! Thank you for giving us such a great place to stay and so close to everything that a person could want to see. We also used many of your suggested restaurants/cafes with great outcomes as well. We will certainly use this place again if Budapest comes up in our future & we will also suggest to others that may pass this way. Thanks again!

It has been a true pleasure to stay at the Belle. For the second time on this trip we have been privileged to be the first guests for our hosts.First in a lovely "Gite" in the Bergerac area and now here at the Belle in Budapest. Ion both occasions we have been blessed with caring and thoughtful hosts. The wine and snacks we found waiting for us were greatly appreciated after a long train ride from Salzburg - especially the milk! The free long distance calls to the US were invaluable after expedia made a mess of our departing reservations. (Note to other travelers: avoid expedia at all costs - the incompetence we experienced from them was beyond belief!) To John Farago, our sincere thanks for allowing us to use this delightful little apartment in the heart of the city. By the end of our four night stay we were thinking of it as "home".
