We have enjoyed our stay here in your delightful beach house! Thank you for sharing this terrific location with our family. Our stay was very peaceful and restful. I love all the wild animals, and domestic (donkeys!) as well.

We arrived after a long day travelling down from Klamath via the Avenue of the Giants. Your house has done exactly what we hoped for—a retreat and an opportunity to recharge our batteries before moving on to San Francisco.

We’ve only left the house once to go to the beach—the sea was freezing but it was exhilarating. Otherwise we have forgotten the clocks and just chilled. The hot tub was great fun.

We have had the chance to read our books, play scrabble, sit out on the decks, enjoy the view of the ocean, count the deer and chat to “Maynard” the donkey. We have stayed in many rental homes over the years, and yours is way up there—well equipped and comfortable.

Thank you,
Julie, Michael, Kate & Andy

P.S. Our holiday started in Seattle two weeks ago and ends in San Francisco. We go home Thursday, the 16th—that’s why we’ve loved the peace and tranquility your home has given us in our busy, full schedule.

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful home. We couldn’t have asked for better. We had a great time at Irish Beach and exploring other areas. Point Arena was very pretty. We discovered a great Mexican restaurant in Anchor Bay called Mariachis. We loved the wildlife! It was so fun feeding the donkeys. They were so cute! They love carrots. Even the deer ate some carrots. One thing that was unforgettable was watching the sunset over the ocean from the hot tub. It was just beautiful! Everything was perfect. We loved our stay. We will definitely be coming back.

Thanks again,

We have so been looking forward to this vacation and your home didn’t disappoint. I was looking forward to some beach time with the kids and Irish Beach is great. Being that the #1 attraction in the area is the beach and it’s pretty much free, that made this vacation very affordable. We tried visiting other beaches—like Manchester State Park and the coastal access sign near the dairy (south of Manchester), but they weren’t so accessible or kid friendly. But they are great for hiking/running—delicious for us trail runners in the house! Every night we took a stroll around the neighborhood after dinner to get the kids good and tired out. We saw deer and bats… super cool. We did venture up to Mendocino yesterday—Tuesday—only to learn that much of the town takes Tuesday off. We tried to visit the much ballyhooed Garden Bakery, but they were closed for prep, as they are on every Tuesday. Let that be a cautionary tale to everyone--avoid your own “National Lampoon’s Vacation” moment and go on some other day. Mendocino’s Baking Company was a great alternative. The sausage and egg pouch was wicked good. We went to Big River beach which was fun for the kids. We nearly dammed the river with all the rocks we threw. But we were also scolded for accepting a cell phone call in Mendocino. None of us had reception for days and I was surprised when my phone actually rang (birthday greeting for me!). It wasn’t a long conversation and certainly not a big deal but we feared using a phone on the streets of Mendocino after that cuz we might get run out of town. Today, on our way out of town, we’re going to try the beach in Elk (Greenwood) which is described as “cozy.” We’ll see…This house could easily become a tradition. If I don’t see the beach at least once per year, we go a little nutty.

Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your home. Also thank you for your kindness and understanding about the crayon mishap.

Sincerely,
Brittany, Jon & Hana
Jennifer, Jack, Riley & Charlotte
Paul, Nadia & Cole

Ps. For those that want to “contain” kids on the back deck, move two of the Adirondack chairs to block the pathway--certainly defeatable, but if you sit in those chairs, you can catch `em as they try to get by.

Thank you for allowing us to spend time in your home. We really enjoyed our time here.

The kitchen was a “Hit.” My husband always takes 2 pots and pans on our road trips, and what is funny is that when we got here you had the same Kirkland pots as we do. We just laughed.

The donkeys and deer came by daily. We did venture off to the beach, the lighthouse and the redwoods. We will never forget this place and will return. Awesome views!!!

After 2 weeks here, we’re wondering where the time went?? We took Tracey and Jason’s (the previous guests) recommendation & visited Mendo’s Garden Bakery—many times. Wonderful food…the owner lives in Pt. Arena. In Pt. Arena we found Franny’s Cup and Saucer Bakery—oh my goodness!! Scones, cupcakes, cookies, all types of delicious calories. And Pt. Arena Tileworks is so worth a visit—bring checkbook or cash (no credit cards accepted). Owner Matt does beautiful tile work—check out online. Maynard visited often, even in gale force winds last night by himself. Be sure to have apples and carrots on hand.

Yes, this is a special place—full of good-soul vibes. Thank you again, Alex and Cathy. We are blessed.

What an amazing week! We spent most of our time relaxing in the house with wine, cheese, and bread. The hot tub certainly helped us relax...the “happiness” sign says it all! Went for several runs around the neighborhood, such beautiful surroundings. We saw the donkeys, a bunch of deer, sheep, and a bobcat down at the private beach. It felt very refreshing to be so close to nature and all the mystery it has to offer.

We spent many afternoons in downtown Mendocino and strongly suggest the Garden Bakery. Think we’ll miss that the most!

We had so much to celebrate this week. We’ve been married 10 years, we both just graduated from college, and now we’re on our way to a PhD program in the fall in Oregon. This was the perfect “eye” of the hurricane. We’ve overcome some of life’s great hurtles, have rested, and now we’re ready to move on. Thanks so much for providing us with a safe, comfortable and relaxing haven for us to recharge and face our futures head on. Life is great, celebrate!

ODE TO COREY HOUSE

Delightful, delicious, delectable
domicile of yours most desirable.
Donkeys braying at the barbed wire fence
waiting for their meal to commence.
Donkeys grazing in the green pasture
Graceful deer on their evening venture.
Mountain sheep munching at the hill top
Long hair whirling bout curved horns atop.
Winter shag hangs like a weathered rag
In the wind swept meadows they lollygag.
Grand hawks roaring gently to and fro
High above cliffs and beach below.
Our Corey house excursion is done
We had the most awesome fun.

The house is beautiful, clean and the view wonderful—but—the most fun was the wildlife and of course the donkeys.

One came to visit and left after he finished the carrots. He came back 15 minutes later with 7 friends and we all had a big laugh. A couple of the donkeys even gave me kisses…it was hysterical. A new private joke amongst friends!

The hot tub was nice but would not heat up or stay hot. Lost heat and we had to get out.

Hope they fix it fast!

Enjoy,

We want to thank you again for a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Kids are a year older and still enjoy your home. We went for a walk on the beach in the morning and the evenings. It was the perfect start and ending to each day. We had all three kids at the end of our vacation. Jerry picked his son up on Thursday. He is 10½ years old and this was his first visit to your home. He didn’t get to see any of the animals because it rained the first day of his stay and it was really windy the following day. We went to Gualala for lunch, the Point Arena lighthouse and the Pier. Lots of laughs and memories that we will talk about forever.

HAPPINESS is what we found here at the Corey House.

We spent six wonderful days in this lovely place and felt so much at home. The house had everything we needed—or wanted. It normally takes us a day or two to decompress on vacation, but we felt immediately relaxed as soon as we walked in the door. Every night was special, but we especially liked our visit from the burrows! (Hint: Guests should have apples, carrots, etc. on hand). Loved sitting in the hot tub at dusk, drinking wine by the fire—I could go on and on. Thank you, Alex and Cathy—we’ll be back!!

We lucked out this trip and had great weather! Right now it is raining, as if to say it’s time for us to go. Irish Beach has become a special place for Alison and me. Our next trip out here (from Colorado) will be in the summer, and I think we will bring our boys. We were able to get the fireplace to work for us, which added to the warmth of your home.

Thanks for everything,

Thanks so much for our wonderful stay. We had an amazing time. You said there was one donkey named Maynard. Once we walked up the mountain, we found about 6 donkeys! It was so adorable and fun. Thank you, we had such a restful time. I came away on holiday with my mother, for us to have quality time together, and your home gave us just that. We relaxed and had a great time. We had a glass of champagne in the hot tub, bubbles with bubbles you might say. The house was spotless, comfy and well stocked. We loved the visits from the deer and donkeys. I enjoyed a morning coffee (thanks mum) in bed, listening to the sea and gazing out. All mothers and daughters should visit.

My wife and I stayed at The Corey House for three nights celebrating my wife's birthday. We had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed the house and our stay. The house has breathtaking views (from inside and outside). The view of the stars and moon from the hot tub at night is magical! We also enjoyed having our elderly dog, Bella, with us. Everything about this rental is exceptional (especially for the price). It is my wife's new, favorite rental and we have stayed at quite a few nice places from Bodega Bay to north of Mendocino. We will be back!

Thank you for sharing your special vacation home with us. All the extras you provide are appreciated, and thank you for letting us bring our best girl—Roxie. Most vacation rentals are pretty generic, but yours is just like home sweet home. We did not miss a teapot or anything else. The beds are very comfortable and the view is amazing & peaceful. We did not want for anything. The donkeys serenaded us from the pasture and all 6 ate apples and carrots out of our hand. The 6th day, about 10 deer came right to the fence for apples. Our kids named the biggest donkey Jeffrey. The spa was wonderful and always maintained its temperature. We sat in it, in the wind & rain with our umbrella. The windbreak you have around it is the best one we’ve seen. We fished down at the beach and caught 12 to 14 inch surf perch.

Hope to be back soon.

What a lovely and comfortable house; we could happily have spent 2 more days here. Never saw donkeys, but the walks were great, as was staying in and cooking, listening to music, watching DVDs. Lots of pleasant time! (Agree w/the Banerjees—we missed a teapot.) We bought a pair of dice for the backgammon set & improvised the missing pieces.

Thanks for everything!

You definitely deserve an award for the design and love you have put into this home. Your hard work shows in all details.

Our weekend was full of warm fall weather. Fishing on the pond at sunrise was special for Jacob as we caught 5 large Rainbow Trout. Jacob caught an 18” one (the biggest) on the last cast.

We had dinner at Albion’s River Inn Restaurant. It was definitely our best dinner out of the year.

Played 9 holes of golf at Little River Inn Golf Course. At $24 it was definitely the poor man’s Pebble Beach with beautiful views of the coast.

Thanks for letting us use your beautiful house.

Thanks for again making your vacation home available to us. Though we have never met face-to-face, we feel as if we know you through the design of your Corey House and the belongings you have so thoughtfully obtained.

This week, after decades of frustration, I captured an image of foggy coastline as it really looks to the eye—not just a soft image, but fog with character and complexity.

The revitalized Mendoza Market in Mendocino is a great place to shop for organic and environmentally friendly products.

The College of the Redwoods Woodworking School was exciting to visit—students are welcoming and pleased to show their work. Then off to Highlight Gallery in Mendocino to examine their graduate finished work.

Weather has been especially cooperative this year, giving lots of variety: some rain, some fog, some clear skies, but not too much of the latter.

Same time next year? Why not?

Thanks,

Thank you so much for letting us into your great home. Every year we come to the coast for our anniversary—this was our 25th and we enjoyed ourselves every day and night. We also wanted to thank you from “Bella.” She had so much fun from all the animals to the beach and ocean—“her 1st time.” We were able to see a family of 8 deer, another group of 5 donkeys and 5 or 6 rams/sheep bighorn. Wow. We did come across a dead sea lion on the beach, but it was on its way back to nature. Couldn’t find pads for the lounge chairs? Spa was not locked and the fireplace spitted and sputtered like it couldn’t get gas? Thought you should know. Found a kite and attempted to fly it. It was a nice try but not as young as we used to be. Out of our 7 days here, only 1 day of fog; otherwise it was sunny and warm. You both did a great job on your home and making it welcoming and comfortable for everyone who visits. We will enjoy making this part of our yearly routine. Thanks again for everything!!!

Despite the "wind event" that coincided with our stay, we enjoyed a great bike ride through the Irish Beach streets and down to the pond. Thank you so much for this warm and cozy house. Keith and I enjoyed the solitude—it was amazingly quiet. We slept in every day, read books, walked the scoobies in the area, met friendly people, enjoyed the (Irish) beach, shopped the local market and in general we rested and relaxed. We even met another Doberman at the beach one day—his name was Chancellor. He was very fine—his owner was Betty (from across the highway.)

Madeline and Roman enjoyed all the wildlife from a safe distance—oh and what wildlife there was...hawks, deer, mountain lions and Bob the Bobcat. Even the donkeys came to visit with their shy young. We cannot believe our luck that we came upon such a treasure—thank you so much!

I feel so lucky to have “stumbled” on this house when doing a search for vacation rentals. Your house and your generosity have exceeded my expectations. I absolutely LOVE your house! Everything about it—the décor, layout, location, necessities, are all top notch.

My husband, Jim, and my 2 boys, Jonathan (5 ½ yrs) and Jacob (3 yrs) all joined me on this family vacation. The boys loved it as well and especially enjoyed feeding fruits/veggies to the 9 deer on the front lawn! They were practically eating out of our hands!

We packed so much into our days here, and the boys always asked to go back to the beach house. We visited Irish Beach (had a sandcastle contest), Point Arena lighthouse (closed) and pier, glass beach, rented kayaks at Casper beach , went tide pooling at McKerriger State Beach and visited Point Cabrillo lighthouse. We BBQ’d every night and made S’mores one night. Thank you for the fond memories, and we’ll all be sad to leave tomorrow.

We are all quite confident that we have a lot in common with you. First, we all love wonderful seaside, comfortable, fun, northern California getaways—yours has treated us very well. Second, it was like you knew we were coming and how we would use your house. Great kitchen set up—knives, utensils and cookware. We made some tasty food most nights AND…we could watch the Olympics at the same time…this was impressive…you must be psychic! It was hard to leave the house because it was set up so right for us. But, we did leave the house and we had a wonderful time planning our wedding in Mendocino as well as enjoying the “tiny” beach that belongs to this lovely community. We really wish the beach was bigger! (hahaha)

Thank you for such a nice place. We enjoyed it thoroughly. We saw most of the wildlife (no donkey) and relaxed quite well. You seem like nice folks with good style who know how to have fun. We hope to return. Thanks again.

We loved staying at your comfortable home here in Irish Beach…from the roomy living room, the well stocked kitchen, the delightful bedrooms and the entertaining local wildlife. All five Monaghans enjoyed their stay here…we slept well, enjoyed the starry sky—the magical misty mornings, walking on the lovely Irish Beach, building super structures from the driftwood, finding treasures in the sand and just being together in such a special unspoiled part of the country. Your little piece of paradise provided us with a wonderful setting for our family and vacation.

This was a great week! Even the kids loved it. They wanted to go to the beach each day…even when it was foggy. The result is that I have a great tan. This house is the best we ever stayed in (and we stayed in lots of rentals). The quality of the house, furniture, kitchen, beds etc. was excellent and the touch for details really showed. The deck on the front of the house is the best idea ever. Always sunny and out of the wind! We will most certainly return here, if only for a weekend!

This is our new favorite place. It is 6:30am on our last morning here. I am enjoying a cup of tea, sitting by the fire and looking at the whale stained glass while everyone sleeps. I am so glad we decided on 3 nights instead of two—next time it is a minimum of 5 nights.

This is the 1st adult family vacation with all 4 of us. We have met elsewhere w/ Nathan (27)—who lives in San Francisco—and have traveled with Juliana (23)—but have not all been together away from home since Nathan was in college. Since he is going to Australia w/ work in August for 3½ months—this trip really was what we all needed.

Last night I serenaded the 5 donkeys and each time I started to walk back inside the old one would bray and nearly whimpered.

Mendocino and Point Arena day trips were very nice—the walk on Irish Beach was wonderful. The best were the relaxing times looking out the windows—playing games and just vegging out. We shall return…

This was the last stop on a week-long trip through northern and central California for us, so we were only here 3 nights. But next time, it will be a week here! From the moment we set foot inside, we knew this would be a special place. Not only have we decided to return next year, but we plan to bring another couple with us. And we got some great ideas on building our own home! Absolutely loved the kitchen. Thanks for keeping such a wonderful home.

This is such a comfortable and warming home. Everything was perfect from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Then to add the key to the private beach was the perfect touch! It was everything I imagined and more. I love all the personal touches in the house from the furniture to all the literature. I’m not much of a book worm but the collection at your house had me very intrigued. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful (and very clean!) house!

See you again hopefully,

The house was nicer than I had expected it to be, and I enjoyed every minute I spent in it. The shower was amazing and your movie selection was impressive. As a 15 year-old, I wasn’t sure if I would be bored or entertained the whole time. I knew by the time four donkeys showed up at our fence I knew I would remember this vacation for the rest of my life.

Thank you for putting in all the effort you did into this house. It made our trip just that much more enjoyable.

Dear Cathy & Alex--& all of the special spirits who have visited here before us—thank you for your welcoming words, your insights, your abilities to make us laugh at dinner as we read entries about children, dogs who are family, anniversaries & special occasions, & all of the memories that made this house a home—our cumulative home away from home—thank you!

We met Maynard and his sisters and cousins, fed deer, watched sheep, a goat, so much beauty here. We walked the beach, inhaled the quiet, gave thanks for our eyesight, & quieted my need to shop as well! We cooked great meals, read, watched movies, listened to music and listened to nothing. And most importantly, found joy and laughter for 5 days. Our daughter and future son-in-law finalized some wedding plans for next summer, all from the Corey House—how did we get so lucky!

So, to everyone who came before & everyone who follows, & especially Alex & Cathy, thank you, bless you, & we wish you good health & a happy return.

We spent a wonderful and magical time here in your lovely home with the beautiful surroundings. We celebrated our 35th anniversary and it was truly a complete getaway into what one might call a slice of heaven.

It is so hard to leave this place, but the memories will last forever.

We leave you with the following poem:

As we arrived for our stay
the days would number four
settling down into your home
We couldn’t ask for more

the sights, the smells, the ocean breeze
Complete tranquilities
the grazing deer, the soaring birds
visits from four donkeys

Even the fog could not hide
the beautiful ocean blue
the morning sun on the hills
the sight of the morning dew.

We enjoyed our peace and calm
Some precious time together
A walk on the beach, quiet moments
Yes, even the perfect weather.

As we leave, we give our thanks
for the home you have and share
may joy and smiles always abound
from visitors everywhere.

God bless this house and all who come to it.

Cathy your attention to detail & design are inspiring--from the copper flashing on the windows to the copper tiles in the bathroom—exquisite, simply exquisite. My Nikee is a job superintendent of large construction sites & her words were, “This is built right—good choices.” As for me, I was delighted to find good knives and pans. Our vacation was amazing like all the others mentioned before ours in this book. Your home is lovely and the views are breathtaking. Our children could not get enough of the hot tub and neighborhood deer.

We had great “adventures” every day. We spent our first day at Irish Beach and practically had it to ourselves—we walked south to a water outlet and had wonderful play time. We also enjoyed going to the Point Arena lighthouse and then to Manchester Beach State Park—loved the sand dunes. The Point Cabrillo lighthouse is a must though. Beautiful walk in and out as well as the light keeper house museum.

We walked along the bluffs in Mendocino and down to the little driftwood beach where our kids stood behind little waterfalls and examined beached jellyfish.

We made a 3 mile loop at fern canyon in Van Damme State Park just before Mendocino. We were there in the rain so there was puddle jumping and mud stomping but well worth the trip.

We were mainly “home” for meals but did go out to pizza at the Point Arena pier and that was a delicious surprise which we highly recommend for your future visitors.

Fabulous winter break and family time! Megan and Jay loved every minute too and are sad to leave tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your graciousness and for opening your home to us. We plan to be back and bring friends too.

This has been a great week and a perfect 20th anniversary. The weather was beautiful, who could believe almost 60 degrees in January? Your taste in decorating is very similar to ours which is why we chose your beautiful home. The private beach was a favorite of ours as well as Kalee. Our son was able to come for one night & even at 18 he loved the rugged rocks & climbing at the beach.

Who would’ve thought that someone else’s vision would also be our DREAM HOME!? We’ve vacationed at Irish Beach for the last 10 years, but this is the first time we chose a home not cliff-side. I have to say this vacation far surpassed any other we’ve taken! From the comfort level, to all the wonderful amenities, to the anti-stress level, this place was Heaven!

Received a visit from the local donkeys who even let my 3 kids pet them and feed them carrots. The deer were also quite tame and enjoyed munching on our carrots as well. The children were thrilled!

Surprisingly, the weather was perfect, sunny and warm which made our Christmas holiday breathtaking! Excellent star-gazing skies and superb sunrise/sunsets!

Our Christmas tree lights reflected off every window in the great room, making for a magical holiday light show.

Needless to say, we are quite impressed and are planning another trip in October.

Many thanks!

This is easily the most beautiful place we have ever stayed. We were once stationed in California & miss it greatly. It was nice to get back to this gorgeous state. It was also great to actually see the stars again.

We got a visit from the donkeys the first day, but unfortunately didn’t see them again. The hot tub is a must! Mendocino is a charming town, & the Mendocino Café is excellent.

Y’all have a wonderful house here…it has all the comforts of home, but with a much better view!! We will be back.

It was very relaxing. We enjoyed our time here. The couches were comfy, nice movie selection, the Sirius radio was great, the flat screen TV with the large bed are a nice combo, great spacious showers, convenient hot tub and peaceful scenery and surroundings, plus great taste in your interior design made a memorable time for us.

The private beach was nice, the little birds that live around the area as well as the deer were pleasant. Nice wall sconces in the master bedroom and various lighting set different moods.

We enjoyed Pirates’ Cove in Point Arena, as well as the scenic drives along the coast and the shops in Fort Bragg, fudge in Mendocino and wine vineyards turning colors by Boonville.

There are so many treasured experiences to discover, enjoy and remember. Thank you.

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home with us! We really enjoyed our time here just relaxing and spending time together. The donkey, “Maynard,” and his extended family came to visit and the kids enjoyed feeding them. We left a couple of carrots, “Maynard” food, in the fridge for your next guests. Our son counted the sheep and says there are exactly 25! I really loved watching the covey of quail, they are so cute. My husband sat and enjoyed the view, just what you are supposed to do on vacation. Our 16-yr-old daughter spent most of her time reading and relaxing in “her” room and enjoyed every minute of it.

We’ve spent the last 4 days exploring the beauty of the coast. We went to Fort Bragg & Mendocino, rode the Skunk Train, and went to the Point Arena lighthouse.

While at the house we lazed & cooked & ate too much!

One of our highlights of our stay was the visits from the donkey. We don’t know his name so we have named him “MAYNARD.” He just looks like a Maynard! He loves carrots and would bray and dig his hooves for more. CUTE!

We just wanted to say thank you for giving us a great place to vacation at. Your home is beautiful. This is the fourth place that we have stayed in Irish Beach and yours is the nicest. The weather has been fantastic. We had some light showers on Tuesday evening, but sunny the rest of the time. The donkeys and sheep greeted us upon our arrival on Saturday. Good thing we had carrots and lettuce to share. We watched the stars at night from the hot tub. We walked the surrounding beaches and of course bought t-shirts in Mendocino. Our dogs loved snoozing out on the decks and running along the beaches. We enjoyed good food and relaxing out on the decks. We will be sure to share our visit with many friends and family.

Your home was everything plus more than we expected. The thoughtful décor, comfortable furnishings, attention to detail & the quiet, peaceful location made this vacation all that we needed. We found little reason to leave the house—though we did hike up the killer hill (Alta Mesa) & walk Irish Beach but other than that—we simply allowed ourselves to BE in the house. We cooked amazing meals 3x/day & we all gained weight accordingly (!!) but it was worth it. The stuffed zucchini flowers came out great—I took a pic which I will send you via email. All in all, the perfect get-away for 3 overworked teachers. Hope to come back here soon.
