"This little Jewel by the Sea surpassed our expectations. The house was just as it was described and even better. Your special attention to details starting with the directions was so appreciated. The welcome basket, the champagne, the informative tips and written notes made us feel so safe and well taken care of. This was our first trip to Hawaii. I know we will be back. You have exquisite taste and a great sense of warmth judging from the decor. My favorite thing to do every morning was to go outside and lay on the chaise lounge in the lanai. In the evening after a relaxing hike or a snorkel, the jacuzzi was in order. We did helicopter over the volcano, bike riding and wine tasting, zoo, macadamia nut factory, farmers market...But inevitably always came back to Mika Lani. It is truly heavenly."

"This is a lovely place. We thoroughly enjoyed being here. Thoughtful treats from you were enjoyed and appreciated. Wonderful vistas and sunrises. The full moon on our first night - incredible - and the waves lit up underneath. Bird watching galore - even saw a night heron one eveing and the fish!...At night we were just about the only humans here. You provided everything we needed and we left a few items we brought from Kona...We hope to return - only problem is your place is so popular, it looks like it is booked for the date we hope for - may have to change our dates to return. Our last night here we saw the glow of the lava flow in the distance. Love this side of the island, especially being on the sunny Kapoho area. Mahalo."

We were married in Hilo on March 24, 1984. The time was very exciting because of the volcanic eruption that happened then. We were so excited when we walked in and saw the wonderful view & beautiful home that you have created here. I can't imagine owning someplace as beautiful as this and not living here full time. We have thoroughtly enjoyed our time here. We did some snorkeling & kayaking, rode bikes over to Champagne ponds, took numerous drives along the coast to take pictures. We even took a boat tour to see lava flowing into the ocean. It seems like we were always doing something but I know we enjoyed just sitting and watching other swimmers and reading our books. "How do you put into words the indescribable? We've been to the Big Island before - even named our chocolate lab 'Kona' - but have never stayed on the Hilo side. We decided to spend a week near the volcano because my husband is enthralled by it. We never expected to fall in love. From the moment we walked into the house, we were lost. We felt so welcomed - not only by the champagne & goodies (mahalo, btw) - but by the place itself. We just stood staring at the lagoon, suitcases forgotten, groceries not put away, neither of us speaking for the longest time. When we finally looked at each other, both of us were grinning like fools. And so it began. A very short courtship and a week-long love affair. I've always been intrigued by snorkeling but accepted it was one of those things I'd never do. You see I can swim, barely, but only if I know my feet can touch bottom. If I know they can't, I panic & tend to drown, or nearly so. The water here in front of Mika Lani is so shallow I decided to try. First attempt, not bad I thought, maybe I can do this. Then a wrasse came up to me, swam away and came back, waiting, as if to say 'aren't you coming in?' Entranced, I followed him, and damsel fishes joined us, coming up to my mask - 'it's ok - you're with us!' A short time later, I looked down to the bottom of a deep hole where I obviously couldn't touch bottom. My mind started sending signals to panic, but another voice over-rode it. 'Screw that! Look at the fish!' We snorkeled twice a day some days. Yes, we visited the volcano, and saw the lava at night, but some days we didn't even leave Mika Lani. When there are no snorkelers in the water, early morning & late evening, the damsel fish congregate in front of the house. First you see a bow wave, like the Loch Ness monster is swimming underneath. Then, suddenly, the damsel fish leap out of the water like dolphins, again & again, the sound of their bodies splashing back into the water akin to giggling. I can't help but wonder if their experience is like mine - briefly experiencing a world totally unlike our own and being filled with joy at the experience. Mika Lani was a blessing to us and we feel privileged to have been allowed, however briefly, to be part of it's world. WE WILL BE BACK."

| Oh my, is all I can say about this wonderful location! From the moment we walked in the door, we felt like we had come home - exactly what we were looking for in a Hawaiian getaway, snorkeling right outside our door, the ocean waves lulling us to sleep each night. And we were welcomed with a basket of Hawaiian treats and champagne - who can beat that? Each guest leaves something behind for the next; we left a book, and some bandaids (those lava rocks are sharp, beware!) You will want to stay a week for sure. Thank you! |

The snorkeling here is fantastic...We enjoyed staying here very much - your home provided everything we wanted & far exceeded our expectations, your web page does not do justice to the beautiful house, location & facilities. Tonight will be a full moon & the view of the pools & sea will be awesome...We enjoyed the kayaks together - a first! The hot tub was a joy after snorkelling & days out. We are sad to leave. Mahalo."

We absolutely loved staying here! This is the nicest rental we’ve stayed in and we’ve stayed in quite a few. It is so wonderful to stay in a place that is so very well provisioned and equipped. You’ve thought of everything.
The views from the lanai are wonderful and there was so much to see nearby – the east coast of the Big Island is now our favorite place in the islands. The tropical fish in the lagoon, the scenic ride down 137, Volcano National Park, the Hamakua coast drive, all were beautiful. We missed seeing the lava flows by a day, but did see magma from the helicopter flight. We even saw whales from the kitchen window.
And thanks for recommending Café Pesto - it was excellent and the Sunday Pahao market was great entertainment.

| We love to get up everyday and explore Hawaii, but it was hard to leave this beautiful, restful spot. It exceeded our expectations. We had a small problem with the gate, partial operator error. A quick cell call with a nice maintenance man resolved the problem We even got to experience a rare lightening storm! Lots of extras provided down to a pair of binoculars. Thanks for a fantastic vacation. |
