In February, 2009 we marked our best holiday ever at the Los Portelas Villa owned by the very welcoming Bob and Ione. Their website is extraordinary and the actual Villa beyond belief. We did in fact wake to howler monkeys which in itself was an unbelievable experience. The house managers and staff were helpful and always within reach for advice. This is by far the best VRBO we have ever rented and would recommend it highly to all. We will definitely go back. Thank you Bob and Ione for opening your home.

Thank you so much for sharing your magnificent villa with us. It was even more than we had imagined. Every aspect of you villa was amazing and the infinity pool was so relaxing and beautiful. The views from the terrace were spectacular. What an experience to be in the jungle, overlooking the ocean, with white-faced monkeys coming for a visit! My family highly recommends Los Portales – the four of us will be back! Michael Meyer and family Centennial, CO

I'm a professional writer, but words are inadequate. Our family of 8 spent Thanksgiving in this gorgeous villa, marvelously built and appointed with about two times everything you might need to live like royalty. Simply, we loved it!
There is plenty to do in the area. We all zip-lined through the rain forest canopy and we all body surfed at the local beaches.
Just remember, though, that the villa, 1,000 feet up and overlooking the ocean, is itself in the canopy. So breakfast coffee is complete with toucans, monkeys, and more hummingbirds than we've ever seen in one place.
If Costa Rica is on your agenda, this is your villa. |

Los Portales was incredible. Wedged into the mountain-side of jungle, the villa was this looming, great, decadent fortress of tile and art, of sweeping vistas and spectacular gardens. The Infinity pool was epic. We spent half the trip bobbing around on flotation devices. One morning a dozen or so monkeys made their way across the jungle in the trees flanking the house. We'd drink coffee on the massive terraces, the pacific ocean twinkling at the bottom of the hill... This was my second time to Costa Rica, and this part of the region is my favorite so far (last time I was in Nicoya). The care takers, staff, and Bob were so helpful with everything from planing our drive to the villa, to telling us where to buy groceries and where to dine. I've rented many a villa around the world and Los Portales was by far the most luxurious and magnificent of them all! I give it my highest recommendation! I can't wait to go back!

Our stay at Los Portales was marvelous. We couldn't have asked for more - except for more time! The house was spacious and beautifully decorated - there was always something new that attracted my attention. Plenty of areas both in and out of the house to relax - I was particularly partial to what I called the "jungle hammock". The pool was both beautiful and refreshing. The panoramic view was exceptional and we were treated to breathtaking sunsets. An unforgettable experience!

If you ever wondered what it would be like to be profiled by Robin Leach on the lifestyles of the rich and famous or be in a house showed on MTV cribs, this is the place. Floating in the infinity edge pool looking out over an almost 180 degree view of the Pacific 1,000ft below is truly spectacular. This is a house that has so many uniquely styled rooms, exquisite art pieces and interesting areas that it is impossible to take it all in on your first day. In fact this is a house and property that takes a whole week of living in before it fully reveals itself to you. The detail in the woodwork around the house is outstanding. Located on 17 acres provides the ultimate privacy. At night the only lights you see are from the fishing boats in ocean below and in the morning you wake up to the sounds howler monkeys and toucans (and usually a greeting from their pet bird, Sami). Normally, the places I have stayed in never live up to the pictures you see on their websites, this one however, is an exception. The place far exceeded my expectations. Overall a great value that I would highly recommend.

WOW! Los Portales was a dream come true for our family! Bob and Ione are INCREDIBLE hosts! The house is incredible - anything that you would need is already there. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with any appliance or utensil you may need. The ART around the house is magnificent. The jungle atmosphere is incredible...we saw more wildlife from the porch of Los Portales than we did on any of our adventures in Costa Rica! We were ready to come back the second we left. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND LOS PORTALES!!!!!!
