Fun in the Wilderness Rob Steph and Pooches Garden Grove, CA Review Submitted: May 27, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009 We had a great time staying at Randy and Elaine's cabin. If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy peace, quiet, hiking, bright stars, and relaxing solitude we highly recommend. Some of the highlights: wood burning hot tub; wilderness trek with Randy and Elaine - they have a cool 4 person ATV and can drop you off in the national park so you can hike back to the cabin; pooch friendly - our 2 medium size dogs had a blast and were welcome guests; lots of places to explore near the cabin for short walks; wild life - we saw deer, butterflies, frogs, toads, lizards, snakes(1 non venomous gopher snake), rabbits, and birds; nice views from the cabin deck; star gazing at night is fun from the deck or hot tub; and eco-conscious living - they did a great job with their own solar powered electricity and the cabin itself is built from recycled materials.
Other notes - the 6.5 mile dirt road to the cabin definitely requires a 4wheel drive, but if you don't have one the owners can give you a ride. Kitchen is pretty complete with gas stove, refrig, microwave, dishes, etc. They also have a new gas grill for outdoor bbq. Randy and Elaine were very nice and went out of their way to show us the property and surrounding area. We stayed in Randy and Elaine's cabin for 3 days and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed all of the amenities provided, such as the wood burning hot tub (first time using one of those!), really nice wood burning stove, and the outdoor lounge chairs to relax. We spent most of our time soaking in all the wonderful scenery around us, seeing all kinds of birds and animals in their natural environment.
The best part about the cabin is the complete silence - it's so strange to not hear any machinery or background noise when you first get there, but boy do you get used to it quickly. By staying here you get all the benefits of camping in a remote place, with none of the hassles.
At night you can see the entire sky with all the stars really easy to spot. During the day we'd sun ourselves, enjoy the hot tub, and relax after some solid hikes. At night we'd chat while waiting for the stars to come out, then hit the bed and fall asleep within 2 minutes (you get pretty tired from all the stuff there is to do).
By the third day we really didn't want to leave, but we're going to come back here again for sure. Lots of vacation rentals end up being just a place to sleep while you run around town, this place can be a lot more than that if you want it to be.
Finally, Randy and Elaine are wonderful, welcoming, and gracious hosts. Helping them sustain their eco cabin and lifestyle was a really awesome nice benefit to having a stay in their cabin. The cabin is well stocked with everything you need: pots and pans, plates, firewood, all the stuff you need to enjoy yourself without having to do much work. We really got the feeling that half the reason they have the cabin is so they can meet the kinds of folks that want to stay there.

Hi Elaine & Randy,
Sterling and I want to thank you both for a wonderful stay. The yurt was everything we hoped it would be! And the evening sky was exactly as you had described it. We did see every ounce of the Milky Way! We also appreciate the personal attention you provided. Like you, we believe in living sustainably and you should both be proud of what you two have accomplished up there! We aspire to living as sustainably as the two of you and we want to thank you for sharing both your knowledge and expertise with us as well as the tour of your property. We only wish that we had more time to see the hidden waterfall. The cabin is beautiful! The transformation is something truly amazing. We look forward to staying again and would highly recommend your hospitality to anyone looking for an authentic & comfortable off the grid experience.
Sterling & Saundra
P.S. I put together a slide show of our road trip/yurt experience. Turn up the volume so you can hear the music.

Thanks again for sharing your beautiful place! It was very rejuvenating! I've shared your website with a couple friends who do yoga / meditation retreats, so perhaps I'll be back before too long. Best, Christina

| We (two couples)stayed at the cabin for 2 nights at then end of May. It was gorgeous! The house is made of wood and glass and is well decorated with antiques and leather couches. It has a modern/rustic feel. We loved being off the grid and still living in luxury (fridge, hot shower, fans, TV if you want). We made it all weekend with just the electricity of the solar panel. We are cooks and enjoyed the kitchen, it is small but has a decent assortment of pots and pans -- if you are a serious chef, bring your own knives. It is about a 30 min. drive to the house on a dirt road, so if you are going for just a weekend, I'd suggest planning to stay up there. We thought we'd want to go to the beach but it is a bit farther then we thought and it is really beautiful so there is no reason to leave. If we were there for a week, then we'd take some day trips but for a weekend, I recommend staying put. There are lots of pretty hikes and it is very quiet and relaxing. The stars are incredible and the views are breathtaking. Unless you have a truck or SUV, take the ride from Elaine and Randy! I've driven plenty of dirt roads and this one is best done in a tall vehicle. We will definitely return!! |
