I hope this email finds you well. Please share our thoughts with Chuck and
David.
The kids were water rats the entire time. It brought back fond memories of
my childhood to see the kids jumping around in the pool most of the day.
Who would imagine that a giant hole with water would keep children
endlessly entertained.
Lauren, who thoroughly enjoys sunbathing, had a great time by the pool as
well, dividing her time between minding the kids, reading, and being the
general audience for belly flops and the source of the much needed praise all
kids require.
As for myself, while I like the sun, I can’t handle it for too long and, like the
children, I bore easily. This predilection for ennui was cured by your kitchen.
Obsession is best diverted from worries of business and mortality by those
transient and hedonistic joys like cooking. I must have visited Hannaford’s at
least 10 times during our one week visit.
My son, Caleb, who doesn’t yet read, proved fairly adept at identifying the
birds by their pictures. We thought we had spotted Scarlet Tanagers but
Michael, the gardener (extremely nice guy and quite interesting) seemed fairly
certain it was something else. A perch maybe? I don’t recall now.
We fed the fish once per day and had no mishaps, and no bullfrog catching,
though admittedly I don’t think we ever saw or heard him. Michael helped me
correctly identify the edible nasturtiums which he ate first to demonstrate
that they were safe.
We found out at The Trading Post that you don’t need a fishing license to
fish
on the ocean or on any estuary so long as you are where the slack tide is.
Once you move inland you need a license for fresh water fishing. We bought
some bunker and tried fishing off the rocks. The kids more enjoyed just
navigating around the rocks than actually fishing.
We never made it far, other than a short run to miniature golf one night.
Interest in Kennebunkport quickly waned in light of the beautiful gardens, the
rocky coast, the sunrises… Who needed the crowds and aggravation? We left
New York to get away from that after all.
Well, I hope we proved considerate guests.
We would be interested in returning next year, around the same time.
Sorry for the long-winded note. To borrow from Twain, it would have been
