Had an amazing time at the "Bird House". We cooked on the deck, cuddled in bed with views of the ocean, and spent two great days exploring Hana. And what a location! It's an easy walk to Hamoa Beach, as well as the Venus Pools, and closer to the State Park (location of the seven sacred pools) than the hotels in town. Plus, it's cozy and warm and a great place for any type of travel. When we return to Hana we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. Thanks! Michael and Kira |

This was our 1st visit to Maui and we were fortunate to find this gem for 5 nights. Hale Manu is a wonderful location & property with especially accommodating owners. Great place for quiet, relaxed getaway – bonus if you enjoy fresh avocados, they are available daily right outside the door! Only real obstacle on road from the airport was a freshly fallen tree that we were able to remove with the help of another dozen travelers. Would suggest renting a small vehicle as we chose a full size car and that was a tight fit on a few stretches. Another plus was the wireless internet which allowed my wife to conduct a 2 hour business meeting. Very comfortable mattress and a gourmet kitchen setup. Also, appreciated the availability of body boards, beach chairs, and other swim gear. Weather was a pleasant mixture of sunlight and tropical rains during our stay. Highlight was visiting the Waimoku Falls which were running full and majestic and the Seven Pools, which unfortunately were “flooded” making it impressive to see, but off limits for swimming that day. Already looking forward to coming back. Mahalo, Chris.

| Our family of 4 had a great time in this beautiful part of the world, in this incredibly thoughtfully designed house. The warm hosts made sure that we were sent when a hurricane threatened power outages and havoc (it didn't happen. What we'll remember are all the details that they put into making this place, the beautiful music we heard Leokane play up the road one night, and their personal attention to our happiness. |

| What a wonderful little slice of Heaven on Earth! We all enjoyed the quietness of Hana along with our fun-loving host-dogs, Kimo, Pearl and Bailey. Escaping the heat of Arizona and feeling the cool Hana breezes at night was soothing to our spirits. We thank you so much for the wonderful accommodations...including the Hawaiian music playing when we arrived. Leokane's CD has become one of my favorites! Mahalo nui loa...Sherry Clack |

| Mahalo to Leokane and Chris for offering their wonderful home to us and our girls. Hana was a perfect getaway in Maui and offered a great variety of swims in lava pools, waterfalls and great beaches (Hamoa in particular!) The house was comforting and relaxing, well-stocked and a peaceful place to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. We even enjoyed the ripe avocados and passionfruit on the property! When we come back to Hana, we will certainly wish to stay here again! |

Leokane and Chris have a really peaceful, well- located and nicely taken care-of property. Their kitchen had everything needed, they had all kinds of beach gear to use, and the local dogs who come to get to know you are friendly and fun. The two- bedroom Hale Manu was the perfect size for my wife, daughter and me. We had a perfect four days. |

| We had a wonderful time! A multi-day visit to Hana is what everyone needs now and then. The property offered seclusion with comfort. It was very quiet, relaxing, restful. Thank you for providing all the hawaiian music. Having a washer/dryer was a nice plus. We enjoyed using the deck. And thanks for the loaner beach chairs and umbrella. We also liked visits from all the neighbor dogs. |

Next time I plan to be in Hana I will book early to make sure I can stay here again. We had a lovely time. The house was phenomenally stocked, we had every kitchen item we needed and more, the beach accessories were varied and just what we needed, and the neighborhood dogs were more than welcoming (they would play when we wanted to play and disappear when asked!). I highly recommend these cottages. |

Dear Chris and Leokane,
WOW!!! Your beautiful spot in paradise is made even more fantastic by the care you take to make your guests feel at home. Of course, at our house we are never greeted by beautiful blossoms scattered everywhere, origami towels, and soothing Hawaiian music. But these are comforts we could easily get used to. We had never stayed in Hana before and it is truly magical. If I had a dear friend visiting I could not have done more than you have to create such a peaceful, beautiful, stress-less environment. Our most sincere mahalo and we hope to see you in August.

Dear Chris and Leokane, Mahalo for a making our stay at Hale Manu everything I hoped it would be. I was impressed from the get go during the communication phase of booking this part of our trip. You were quick to respond to all of my questions via email and provided some wonderful recommendations.
Once we arrived in Hana, the directions you provided were excellent, and we very much enjoyed the welcoming Hawaiian music and fresh plumeria blooms sprinkled throughout the house upon arrival.
My friends and I loved our morning sunrise walks. Upon return, we'd fire up a pot of coffee and soak in the amazing ocean view from the deck. The house was stocked with everything we needed and it was a nice perk to have wireless internet. Two highlights included our hike to Waimoku Falls and Red Sand Beach.
I have already recommnended the house to two friends, and I look forward to a future visit!
Thanks again for making my birthday trip one that I will never forget.

Dear Chris & Leokane, Mahalo for our lovely time at Hale Manu. It was truly a most peaceful and relaxing vacation. The house was quite perfect for us. Thanks for all the info and help in planning our trip there. It really helped for our first visit to Hawaii. So many lovely places to go in the area. We also enjoyed seeing Leokane at the hotel. It was the perfect ending to our week there. We will tell everyone we know of your lovely home. As I stated in the house guestbook. Down the Hana Highway we came and we will never be the same. Our paradise vacation at Hale Manu is already fading into our distant memories as we return to the nonstop life we left behind. Yet, Scott and I often remind each other how fortunate we were to have had the vacation and especially the stay at Hale Manu. Hale Manu offered everything we could ever want including the absolute best amenities, all the comforts of home (and more), friendly 4-legged visitors in the shapes of sweet dogs (Kimo, UA and Kobe) and the cutest Geckos (Curi G was my personal favorite) ever, a fabulous landscape, and the sound and scents of the ocean gently streaming in and around the house.
We regret not having met Leokane in light of the positive things we heard about him, yet we did have the good fortune to meet Chris, who was a kind and gracious host.
Our only wish...is that we could've stayed longer.

The lovely Hale Manu has not faded at ALL in our memories. We can't stop talking with friends and family about the gem of a house we stayed in on our Honeymoon. It was the most perfect way to stay in Hana that I could possibly imagine, and it was EXACTLY what I had hoped it would be. Relaxing, inviting, welcoming, and so many other adjectives!
We are firmly holding on to our time there and actively looking for a couple to go back with -- to share the joy. We hope to see you soon!

Aloha Chris and Leokane, Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us! If you are reading these reviews, they are all very helpful in deciding where to stay, right here at Chris and Leokane's place. The yard with all the big trees are amazing, ocean view, cute, friendly dogs, huge deck, kitchen with everything you may need to cook since there are not a lot of places to eat in Hana, it is best to take advantage of the nice home and relax and barbeque on the big nice deck area. When we return to Hana, we won't go unless Chris and Leokane's 2 br, 2 bath home is available for us to stay in again. Mahalo, John & Kim |

I came to Hana with two of my best girlfriends and we had an incredible time. The house was absolutely perfect for us, fully loaded and cozy. The surroundings were unbelievable, and every possible option was offered to us, from dinner at the Hana Hotel, to dips in the oceans and ponds. We loved the dogs, the land, and especially, the graciousness of our hosts. I'm already scheming to come back! I grew up in Honolulu, but Hana is a place like no other. Much aloha. A wonderful spot. | A slice of heaven. The house is equipped with everything you could want - a great kitchen, several seating areas, a great selection of music, a gas grill and so on. Our hosts made themselves available when we asked or needed advice, and were invisible when we were just relaxing. Great dogs! The view down the slope to the ocean changes from dawn to dusk with a breeze pattern that suits the time of day. We have visited four of the islands over the years and find Hana to offer a taste of Hawaii unlike any of the resorts and cities. It is as close to paradise as we have found, and our home for a week was perfect. I know we'll be back... |

Aloha Chriss &Leokane , How can one begin to describe Hale Manu ? , other than that , it allows me to totally feel that I am at My home , My private nest , For whatever length of time spent there , it is simply magic at every moments of experience , Rain Showers , then Bright sun , Then more Sprinkles , Then sea Breezes , Quiet , then rustling of tree leaves , while I lay in bed , smelling every aroma traveling from very far across the vast Ocean ahed of me . My daughter simply shines when we arrive at the property , and this time I introduced my new beloved to my secret hideaway and he fell head over heels with my sacred , and very special home away from home . Thanks so much for sharing Hale Manu with us! Your warm welcome and attention to detail made us feel right at home in a wonderful exotic location. The house we stayed at in Wailea the following week, while beautiful, suffered in comparison for not having everything one could possibly need readily available as Hale Manu does. Holy Wow!!! We had, rain and all, such a great experience with Chris and Lokeane's home. That's what it was. They opened up their HOME to us. At least that was how it felt. I have family that won't even do that! We had a mother/daughter/best friend reunion and it was amazing. We couldn't have chosen a better place to spend such quality time together. The rains fell, which we badly needed, but no one cared. Hikes happened anyway. Bonding took place and secrets were told and revealed and relived and it was wonderful!! We were welcomed by Ua, the property dog, and were escorted away by her son, Kimo. It was perfect. Mahalo gentlemen for making your home our home. Be well guys! Dear Chris & Leokane,
Coming from Orlando, Florida, the last thing we wanted on our vacation was to see lots of highrise hotels and restaurants overflowing with noisy tourists, and Hana didn't disappoint. It was, in fact, exactly what we were seeking: a quiet, jungly, oasis tucked into the side of glorious misty mountains. Hale Manu was just the right size for us and had all the amenities we could've asked for. We appreciated the use of your beach chairs, boogie boards, and more while down at Hamoa (our favorite) beach. Hale Manu's location, tucked into the corner of the property surrounded by fruit trees and passion flower vines, was wonderfully private. We took advantage of the large deck to listen to the ocean waves, enjoy the fragrances of ginger and angel's trumpets, and watch for shooting stars in skies that were filled with millions of twinkling lights. You even managed to provide us with a telescope! While Hana and Hale Manu were wonderful, they would be nothing without the two of you who did everything possible to make sure our whole stay was memorable. We won't forget you, Ua, or Kimo, and hope to be able to return someday soon. Mahalo! |

| We have returned for the second time to Hale Manu and loved the relaxing, quiet, peaceful Hawaiian feeling. It's great to be able to eat fruit off of the property and the kitchen is clean, well stocked and spacious. We stayed four nights the first time and that seemed a little too short. Then this time only three nights and that was definitely not enough time. I would suggest a minimum stay of five nights to experience all of the different hikes, waterfalls, pools, and beaches that Hana has to offer. It's really great the way Chris and Leokani try to provide every little thing that you could possibly need to have fun and make your trip filled with fond memories. Thanks again. xxoo |

We have been vacationing in Hawaii for 40 years, but it was not until we stayed in Hana that we fulfilled a life-long fantasy of actually "living" in Hawaii. The Hale Manu is much more like a home than a vacation rental.
We appreciated the large, open, well-appointed kitchen; the convenience of having our own washer/dryer and gas grill; Chris and Leokane's attention to detail; the charming decor; the small library; being within walking distance of two beaches; and the PRIVATE lanai. Too many things to list! We fell in love with the Hale Manu the minute we arrived and we're STILL gloating about our lucky choice in accommodations.
Hana has a peacefulness and rhythm that reminds me of a Hawaii that no longer exists on the Ka'anapali/Kihei side of Maui. We loved the quiet swimming beaches, the hiking opportunities, the local organic fruit. And the absence of human noise was remarkable - what a rare and precious treat to have silence interrupted only by singing birds and the distant surf.
Our only disappointment was that we did not arrange to stay longer. Six days and seven nights was hardly enough. Hana is a slow, sensual, authentic kind of pleasure -- the longer you stay, the better it gets!

| What an oasis. Our time at the Birdhouse was like a sojourn out of time. One of my children was not feeling well while we were in Hana. The Birdhouse was a magical place to recover: the flowers sprinkled everywhere, the avocados, the nearby Venus Pool, the view out our bedroom window of the full moon over the ocean, even the geckos added to the charm. We had a great time. It felt like staying at friends' 2nd home and I guess that invariably, your renters become friends with you. The houses are very comfortable and for cooks like us, very well appointed and great to indulge our passion. We rented both houses and so we took numerous walks through the yard back and forth, picking fresh avocados that fell to the ground outside the 2 bedroom cottage as well as passion fruit, bananas, papayas and the like, all of which are in the garden, practically an arm lenght's away, there for your tasting pleasure. The citrus were not quite in season... a pitty, because according to Leokane, they are fantastic. Try a fresh avocado with lemon or lime, olive oil, salt and pepper and you won't need any other snack when you're lounging on the deck, watching the ocean waves not too far away. At night the place is amazingly quiet and you will see more stars than you've ever imagined possible in your entire life. It's hard to get that picture unless you're 10,000 ft up a mountain and no city glare in sight, yet here you get it with the ocean practically at your feet and a gentle breeze swaying the palm trees just above you, the only thing restricting your view being their giant leaves. Hamoa beach is a dream, as is the Tuesday night Luau there, a must if all you've seen in the past are the highly commercialised luaus everywhere else in these islands. Relax, unplug, and kick back. This is the place to do it. |

Though a bit hot during the day, the cottage was fully outfitted with everything we needed to be totally comfortable on our vacation. The guys were fabulous, the wine selection at the local store was great, the Spa at Hotel Hana Maui was INCREDIBLE (I recommend the Thai massage) and the Venus pool just up the road was so much fun to jump into. I can't wait to take my son back when he is a wee bit older and do it all again. You will have a wonderful time barbecuing on the lanai at Hale Manu! |

We absolutely loved our stay in Hana. I traveled with my two boys. We went to the Maui Stables and took a three hour horse back ride. It was awesome because our guide (whose name was Hana) told us stories and history the entire ride about the area and they even did authentic historial chants before we went up the mountain. The bathroom was the nicest bathroom right there outside in the wilderness.
Hamoa Beach was exceptional. I think one of my boys was about to cry before we left--they both liked it in Hana so much. We also visited Charles Lindberg's grave (right by the Maui Stables) and I even took our cute little red jeep and attended mass at the Catholic Church on Saturday afternoon.
The house did have everything and we really enjoyed the books there on Hawaii. It was like a small library.

Theresa, Bjorn and Nicholas
P.S. A "must get" is the Hana Audio Tour CD which has a beautiful song by Leokane Pryor--he also sings at the Luau at the Hana Maui resort.(next trip)
We also discovered a local narrative history book about Maui entitled Maui Remembers, which has a few pages on Hana and the history and is available at Borders for $22.95.
Aloha til next time. We are in love! |

We had a wonderful time. The two bedroom house is the best equipped house that we have ever rented. Everything one might need was there.
We especially enjoyed the lovely rural atmosphere, the flowers and trees, the music of the birds, and the view of the ocean. It was a unique environment - peaceful and lovely.
We definitely would like to come back. |

Thank you so much for sharing Hale Manu with us. It was like staying with friends, and we felt at home immediately. The house is warm, stylish and inviting, as well as perfectly stocked with every amenity one might need.
Our toddler loved playing in the yard and picking avocados that fell to the ground. He adored seeing the oranges, bananas and fruit trees. We ate every meal outside on the deck and always felt relaxed by the beautiful views of the gardens, pastures in the distance and the waves crashing at the ocean below.
At night the house was so quiet and peaceful. Our final night there was a full moon rising over the ocean that loomed larger and more romantically over the horizon than one could describe. Sleeping there was a dream, being able to see the palm trees swaying illuminated by moonlight and hearing the surf crash in the distance.
We are so happy to have spent a few days in Hana. It was like a vacation from vacation, compared to the hustle and bustle of the other side of the island. Thanks again, Chris and Leokane, for making our trip so memorable! |

We would definitely love to come back to enjoy more of the beaches; traveling with a small child proved to be more work than expected!!! Again, thank you so much for everything you did and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. A much needed paradise to go back too!!!! |

Staying in this cottage was like staying in a good friend's second home. Completely equipped with a kitchen full of every gadget you might need to make wonderful meals, if you like to cook. Peaceful beautiful spot. if you are looking for a low key, slowed down vacation in a beautiful natural rural setting--this is it. We give it a 10. |

| Leokane(Jacques) and Chris, We have the happiest memories of Hawaii due in a large part to your very comfortable guest house and your hospitality. If we travelled a lot I would keep this slice of heaven a secret, but Hana is what I imagined Hawaii to be...lush and incredibly beautiful. What you will find is a crazy amount of traffic on the north side of Hana, but on the south side where this place is you are welcomed by peace and tranquility. Walk on the road, across a ranch field to the Venus pools. Dive off rocks to crystal clear water, snorkel, crack open a cocunut, enjoy. After your stay here you will, as we did, wish you had planned to stay longer. Aloha and mahalo |

We were so fortunate to have found the Hale Manu. It is such a wonderful house. We only spent two nights there, but being in "the jungle" watching the sunrise over the ocean made me wish we had spent a week there. Friends had told us there was nothing to do in Hana, but we found not enough time to do all the things we wanted to do. |

We also had never been to Maui before. Hale Manu was exactly what we had hoped it would be. Actually, it was much better than we had hoped.
We were in dire need of some relaxation time, and a little adventure, and we found a perfect balance of both. We stayed in Hale Manu for a week, and were continuously pinching ourselves. We cooked, explored swimming holes, forests, and perfect beaches, and had more than our fair share of 'Cook-Wees' (a locally made macadamia nut cookie you can buy by the box!).
The weather was wonderful, and every little detail of our experience complimented the next one.
Chris & Jaques welcoming, gracious and knowledgable hosts. We look forward to returning to Hana and Malanai as soon as we possibly can. It was truely one of the very best vacations we have ever had. The perfect escape.

| This was our first trip to Maui. We stayed in Lahaina and Hana. The highlight of our vacation was staying at Hale Manu in the Birdhouse in Hana. This is a quaint stylish plantation cottage out-fitted with all the necessities of home plus extras. From the time we arrived we were greeted with great hospitality. There was always something to do, so many places to explore and the weather was incredible. We spent 7 days in Hana and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the real Hawaii, especially staying at Hale Manu. We are already planning a return visit; this is a #10 vacation experience. |

| Chris and Jacques have created a wonderful enviornment of "old Hawaii". We loved sitting on the deck reading the books of the Islands, listening to Hawaiian folk music and the waves on the beach. Hale Manu is one of the most peaceful places to spend a vacation. The beach at Hamoa, the sacred pools, the bamboo forest are wonderful. As the slogan at the market "far away from Waikiki" says it all. |

Feeling a definite need for a taste of Hana, one of my favourite magical places on the planet, I went on an internet trail and to my delight found The Guest Houses at Malanai - perfect for my friend and I. When we arrived at Hale Manu, which was even more divine than the photos, we instantly fell in love with this most special place and its WONDERFUL owners, Chris and Jacques. They have filled the house with such lovely things that give it great warmth and comfort - we knew that it was going to be very hard to leave when the time came. Dining on the verandah with the sound of the ocean and the delicious Hana air....words cannot describe....and of course visiting all the beautiful haunts like the Bamboo Forest and the Seven Sacred Pools etc etc. Absolutely gorgeous - truly great food for the soul! We can hardly wait to return and WE WILL!! |

Aloha,
Normally I am not the type to do this sort of thing but my family and I were so pleased with our stay at Hale Manu that I wanted to add some comments.
We picked Hale Manu from off the internet...we really knew nothing about the place but we had stayed in Hana before and had an Idea of its location. If you have never been to Hana we can say that it is truly a gem and a place that must be visited at least once in ones lifetime. Anyway we loved the idea of having a place to stay that was close to Homoa Beach yet alittle out of town but not too far. So that was as high as we set our expectations. After the long drive and we pulled up to the Hale and we knew we were in a special place. The Hale was perfectly outfitted for our needs. We like to cook and the kitchen had everything..even some extra tonic for my evening cocktail was available! The beds were comfortable...plenty of towels..the place was clean...basicly everything you could ask and should expect. They boys even provided fresh flowers from their grounds through out the house. We had a real sense of privacy during our stay. Our kids love the place because they could spread out and explore the yard which has swing and they even adopted "Pua" the dog during our stay. But the best thing about Hale Manu is its owners Chris and Jacques. Honestly they are some of the nicest kind hearted, giving people we have come accross in some time. We can assure that you will be taken in with their hospitality and true old school Aloha spirit. So for whatever it is worth you can take it from this well traveled family that Hale Manu IS the place to stay in Hana!

Aloha Guests, The "Guest Houses at Malanai" are two separate homes on part of our two acre property in Hana. Both homes have been recently renovated and newly offered as guest accomodations in April 2005. Living on the property allows us to provide you with consistently clean and impeccably well maintained homes. We feel fortunate to enjoy Hana everyday and our dream has been to create a unique and beautiful place to share with our friends and guests. Hana is a very special paradise and your stay here should reflect that. We believe that our guest homes offer the best in quality, elegance, location and comfort that Hana has to offer! Come enjoy OUR Hana!
We keep a guestbook in each of our homes for guests to write in during their stay. Here are a few excerpts you will find in the Hale Manu book:
It has been a true joy. One of the few places on Earth as comfortable as home. Bob, Kaua'i, HI
What can I say. This is such an unbelievable place. Thank you so much for sharing your "Hana" with us. We can't wait to come back. Anthony and Poko, Woodacre, CA

Thank you so much for the lovely inroduction to life in Hawaii (this is, after all, my first visit to the islands). I will cherish my memories of Leokane's Luau, the beautiful beaches, the lovely dinners, the long relaxing days of doing nothing much... Matt, San Francisco, CA
