| I have been to Ubud twice before, but never had an experience like Villa Agung Khalia. The villa is expansive and so quiet. You can walk through the rice paddies to get to Ubud, or a driver is at your call for short hop into town. I've stayed in Ubud proper and had too much of an urban experience with small accommodations and noise. Also, the staff at the villas are so friendly and helpful - we learned a lot about Balinese customs and tradition from them. After a week at the villas, we had the villa's owners set a tour of the island to all of their favorite places and stayed in the accommodations that they arranged for us. Every place was absolutely beautiful and right on the coast - yet never pretentious. This last trip was absolutely our best experience in Bali. |

--We were lucky enough to be some of the first guests at the newly opened Khalia Agung Villas in Ubud. We had heard about them through a friend that knows the owner, a college professor in the USA that leads trips abroad. He built the villas in very traditional Balinese style and has made locals partners and managers, which allows the villas to both modern and traditional at the same time.
The location is about 10 minutes driving outside Ubud situated in a fabulous rice field. You can also walk 45 minutes through the field if you are so inclined. It is very tranquil and traditional life proceeds all around the villas. There are several drivers on staff with regularly scheduled trips into town, as well as being able to go as needed.
There are 3 villas on site, all 2 story and quite spacious. You can rent one or more villas or, we heard, you can even rent a floor if it is available. There are 2 pools on site, a pond with traditional Bale Bale in the middle, and a small restaurant for breakfast and snacks. The grounds are peaceful and would be a perfect group or yoga retreat. The villas have relationships with masseuses, healers, etc. and they will come on site.
The staff is all local villagers and all wonderful. Be sure to talk with them about their village and culture – they are happy to share and even show you around. They know everything about Ubud and the environs to just tell them what you are interested in (art, dance, etc.) and they will know exactly where to go.
The villas are fantastic and I would highly recommend them to anyone. The only issue might be the distance from Ubud, but that seems worked out with several cars and drivers at the ready so you end up getting access to town while getting to stay in a beautiful rural area.--
