Four girls traveled from DC are to participate in the 3rd Annual Bath County Triathlon! We loved the charming accommodations, but sure wish there was air conditioning!) and the views are spectacular! We had a fabulous time - had a great race! And spent a refreshing afternoon/evening at the Jefferson Pools, Sam Sneads' Tavern and here at Sunrise Farm. Thank you and we'll see you next year!

After the tranquility and comfort of this house and area, our highlight was Hidden Valley. A beautiful place, with a wonderful, easy, flat riverside hiking trail. Just right for our mood and physical condition. A very restful weekend!

Relaxing and much needed get away for our two families. Great views and stargazing. The girls got very adept with the cacuum cleaner. We all decided the farm should be remanded "Ladybug Farm." We cooked great meals and had some wonderful quality time with our teenage daughters!! Watched movies payed board games and walked Cleveland, our spaniel, who loved being a country dog for the weekend. Headed up to the Highland Maple Festival on Saturday where we enjoyed the town architecture and mouth-watering maple doughnuts. Today, off to the warm springs, then home to Charlottesville. Would LOVE to know the history of this house and farm!! When it was built, by whom and what it looked like back then.

Sunrise has a special meaning to us since some of our family members once lived there many years ago.We praise
Jonathan & Justine Rose for Taking an old broken down farm house and restoring
it to the beautiful home that it is now.
Our stay at sunrise this past summer was
both a vacation and reunion with our old
love ones that once lived and worked this farm dating back to late 1800.The
restoration is magnificent. Sunrise is now a beatiful and comfortable home
with all the conviences of a modern
home. The many rooms and baths as well as
the modern kitchen make Sunrise most
ideal for family lodging.

To all of you who have lodged at Sunrise, please join with us and thank
the Roses for such a wonderful home
away from home.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful farmhouse. We had a restful stay. Get in after dark the first night, but the proch ligh was on, so no problem. Friday went o Jefferson Pools, only 3 women in the pool, so very peaceful. They don't allow loud talking/laughling, which we liked. It was raining hard all day - drove to monterey for lunch. Beautiful drive. Saturday - back roads to Staunton and ate at Train Station - good food and atmosphere. Sun - Lexington - very historic, National Bridge and Peaks of Otter, all good. Monday, back to Monterey in the sunshien and beautiful fall foliage - 75 and no clouds! Drove to the Poor Farm off the road to Monterey. Never seen one before. Hate to leave today. We brought bird seen and have seen over a dozen birds here including the rare Prothontary Warbler. Saw wild turkeys and deer on the highway.. We'll be back hopefully.

This house is so restful and "homey" in spite of the fact that e had our three sons "under three" in tow. They lovd it sooo much, they didn't want to go to sleep at night, but we did want to go to slee at night wo we promised them all ofthe wonderful toys they could enjoy in the morning and that seemed to do it for them. All we really wanted to do here was gaze at the "only in picture books" view , walk the groungs and lounge in the comforts of such a warm and convenient environment. We couldn't have asked for a better site to suit our crew. Thanks for taking our last minute reservation with such grace and calm, as I was in much need of a safe and fun get away for our children. You ill be hearing form me again, Justine. All the best for now!

Congratulations to Justine and Jonathan Rose for offering such a wonderful home place in the country. "Sunrise" has a special meaning to us, because it was once in our family. The restoration work that has been done is perfect in every way. It brings back so many wonderful memories when I visited here as a small boy with my parents and Aunt and Uncle. I would like to take the time to comment the Roses for preserving this old homeplace and wonderful memories that are preserved with it. May "Sunrise" last for many ear to come so that perhaps my children and grandchildren can enjoy the old Gardner farm. We would also like to thank our wonderful cousins, Bernie and Stewart Agreen for spending these few days here wit us. They have made our vacation so much more meaningful. God bless them both. PS - The flower planter that belonged to Aunt Virginia is back home. It's on the side porch. Hope you will like it.

As has been expressed by so many others, we too enjoyed the solitude your home has offered us. We typically live the very fast-paced North Eastern Lifestyle with all the amenities and more - we needed to simplify and we did that here. Rather than going to all the popular places in your area, we chose to enjoy the views from the sun deck, gazing at the lovely mountains and watching the birds and butterflies. My husband and I especially appreciated this opportunity. Our 7 year old was pleased to play with the "toys" in the basket and managed to keep herself entertained for hours. Our 17 year old was least happy, not liking the fact that there was no AC, no girls and no TV (Oh well :-}) The kids tended to stay inside more than out, as they were petrified of the large amount of bees you have all around the property - some almost as large as our chihuahua. They were scared for me too; I'm allergic. Fortunately, I was just fine. As far as I know we avoided the poison ivy - no rash yet! Again, our sincere thanks for allowing us to stay in your lovely Sunrise home.

What a lovely home and grounds (though the grass really needed to be mowed). The kitchen is so well-stocked and all of the beds were very comfortable. The family had a nice weekend together and we're already planning a trip together for next summer. This year we went fishing at Douthat and Lake Moomaw while the women looked around the Homestead and relaxed at Jefferson Pools. We ate at the Varsity Grill and Country Cafe - both very good!

We had a wonderful few days here and thoroughly enjoyed this war, easy, relaxed house. Especially appreciated the charm of the kitchen fireplace and your thoughtful collections of ammenities, flashlights, brochures, etc. So kind. Hidden Spring, the Jefferson Pools, the trout at the Waterwheel Restaurant were highlights. But the best were the lazy mornings right here, gazing out at the amazing views and at the flowers both wild and cultivated. Thank you so much for this opportunity to explore such a beautiful part of Virginia. Glad to have "won" this at the auction. And a copy of the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) in the bedroom! Next time we'll bring a magnifying glass!

We just love the geography around Sunrise and that view - wow! The combination of mountains and pastures all over the area make this one of our favorite places to go. This is an old house that has been lovingly restored. We were there for a week and cooked in 5 nights - unheard of for us on vacation - usually rental places present cooking "challenges", but not here. Grilled the main stuff outside and happily used the well-equipped kitchen for the rest of the fixings. Staying home for dinner was a treat, the views, the cows mooing, the peacefulness - really fun!

Just the two of us and most grateful pooch from Connecticut. We have been wantting to spend time in the Shenandoah (Valley) instead of just passing through as we ave so many times. Finally! And in such a lovely place. Have done 3 hikes that were not "killers" but gave us a nice workout: 1) Hidden Valley Trail along the Jackson River, easy, flat. 2) Douthat (park ranger says it's pronounced doubt-thit, accent on first syllable ;-}) Beards Hollow Trail to Blue Suck Falls, down Blue Suck to Tobacco Ridge trail about 2 hours 3) Lake Moomaw-Bolar Loop trail with a short side out to Island overlook, aobut two hours. No shade in April! Had a lovely outdoor meal at Waterwheel Restaurant - good food, nice atmosphere. Cooked home rest of time since awesome weather! Marligton, WV not worth trip unless you are diong the Greenbrier bike/hike path which we home to do next time.

What a great place for a peaceful weekend get-away. The Craigs all met here - some driving from Ohio, some from Virginia Beach for Easter. Drew and Karla will most likely be transfered to Japan in a month with the Navy, so this cabin is a great place for a peaceful weekend. We went to Douthat State Park on Saturday. The BBQ grill was given a workout by the humans while our dog, Donzi, seemed to be much more interested in the pasture. A great time was had by all! Thank you!

My earliest memory of being in this house is from when I was only three years old. Indeed, it is among my very earliest memories of all! At that time my Great Aunt Virginia (Gardner) lived in this house. It was down the street from the Mayse farm, a place we were to visit many times in the next two decades. My father and his sister brought my sisters and cousin to this area often to keep us connected to our roots. Over the years, we would see the "old Gardner place" and reminisce on it's place in our family's history. How appropriate that we were able to stay here again this particular weekend! My father passed away earlier this week. We were fortunate to be able to fulfill his great desire of being buried down the road from this very house at the Woodland Cemetery. We have visited that cemetery so many times, so many of our loved ones and ancestors are laid to rest there - it has been profoundly moving to look our from this house and see not only the pastoral hills and meadows and woods that make this area so uncommonly and breathtakingly beautiful, but also to see the Woodland h, reminding me that in some way, I still belong here. I am intensely grateful that this lovely, charming house has been so lovingly and tastefully restored. It is deeply gratifying to see the house well and well-cared for! And I am especially thankful that under the proprietorship and stewardship of the Rose family, our family has been allowed access to a "family history site" in lieu of mere accomodation on such an important family event. We have had a wonderful stay here. We have enjoyed the comfort and peacefulness and quaintness of the house. We have enjoyed being able to gather and visit and share this time in meaningful ways with one another. This house has once again connected us as a family. My sisters, my cousin, my extended cousins, their families and some close friends were given a great gift by being able to come together in this house. We thank you and congratulate you on providing us with such a jewel. I'm sure it was not easy to bring this house back to such an hospitable state. We hope to return for a small reunion in another year or so. We hope you will continue to keep this property available to those who can benefit from it's respite!

What a beautiful and restful place! This was a homecoming of sorts for us. One of the previous owners of the house was Mollie Cleek Mayse Gardner. I believe she was born in this house on came to live here as a child. (Mollie was born in 1859. died 1944.) Several descendants of Mollie spent the weekend in the house that the family once referred to as "the homeplace!" We were here to celebrate the life and attend the burial of her grandson, Stewart Grattan Mayse who was laid to rest yesterday, April 1, 2006 in the Woodland Cemetery. We had beautiful weather and enjoyed the blooming daffodils and forsythias. We walked the grounds and compared old photographs to the current vistas of the house and outer structures. We tried to imagine how the grounds looked in the 1930s, 40s, 50s, when our photos were taken. We are so thankful to have been able to spend the weekend in the family "homeplace" of our Virginia roots. The descendants of Mollie Cleek Mayse Gardner were Laura Mayse Wanlass & family; Melissa Mayse Bailey and family; and Stewart (Mayse) Algreen and family. Virginia Gardner (daughter of Mollie) put her homeplace up for auction on August 23, 1969. Thanks to the Rose family for their loving and beautiful restoration!

Our three families that came to Va for our friend's wedding had a great time here. The wedding was next door at the Jeavons' Farm. With all three families being from the city of Cleveland, we enjoyed our time in the huge change of scenery. The view was spectacular and the time together just playing games and relaxing was nice. We had no TV, phone calls, or the hassle that goes with our everyday lives. That's what made it so relaxing. Thank you!

We loved this trip after 40 years of camping and cabin fever at Douthat this was a beautiful change! My daughters, sister, niece and grandchildren will have lovely memories of your home, I thank you for allowing me to bring them here. What wonderful people you are, not many people would open a home to strangers. We're headed back to Virginia Beach, hope to come back before school starts. Oh, and thank you for leaving the front porch light on, reminded me of my great grandmother's home. We left a gift for the house. It's a woman angel to look over the place until the next gues arrives. We will name her "Sunrise." This was a wonderful trip and a beautiful house. The owners were as wonderful. We've never stayed outside of Douthat (State Park) in over 30 summers, but this weekend and we enjoyed it immensely.

Sunrise....Sunset....swiftly go the days....we sang this song as we soaked up the ambience of Sunrise Farm. Gourmet cooks, we went right to work in the well-appointed kitchen! There were no shortages of personal and private spaces as well as grand 'communal' gathering areas. Our daily pilgrimages to the Warm Springs baths renewed our bodies and rejuvenated our spirits. I look forward to a return - and thank Justine and Jon for letting us experience their home-away-from-home as our own "gentlemen's and gentlewomen's farm in the country." Kudos!

This farmhouse and surrounding land and vistas have been as healing a part of our trip as the Jefferson Warm Springs have been (the original purpose for our trip and destination). I feel both it's history and the peaceful present moment here. We are gourmet cooks , arrived with food galore and exotic menus, and the kitchen not only did not disappoint, but made cooking easy, accessible and full of light and love (lots of pots and pans too!). The cedar tree at the end of the center walk feels like a beacon, the views are lovely and the home feels spacious, all elements I needed! Rain has stopped and there was a sunrise! I thank my friends for this trip and your hospitality as well. I'd happily return (tho' would want to avoid poison ivy - can you try to de-junglize it?) to bask and heal.

Our better natures have prevailed and we've abandoned our plans to squat in your lovely house until the marshalls kick us out. We've had such a fantastic time here in the mountains - no one wants to return to Brooklyn. The kids (age 3, and twins 18 months) ent bonkers for the front yard and loved the ladybug infestation though sadly many a bud met an untimely death under a thumb The grand parents came and planted "Fairy Stones" inthe daffodils because we'd told them fairies live in the mountains - and in fact, the whole trip was magical - from the stunning drive past Monterey to Blue Grass to the Natural Bridge and it's dripping caverns. We had four gloriously sunny days and were treated to two misty, rainy days there were equally beautiful with the peaks disappearing inside the clouds. I was here to do research on my new book and was lucky enough to be introduced to a life-long ginseng hunter who told me stories of life in a log cabin without electricity, of cooking on a wood stove and drinking from the spring that ran through their kitchen. He also tolm me several interesting tales of moonshine and where to buy it! We hope to be back soon and thank you for your generous hospitality.

Sunrise Farm was a great place, a perfect place, to
spend Thanksgiving. The house is very comfortable,
and surrounded by an abundance of natural colors. We
were walking on the railroad tracks and found a random,
completely preserved deer leg laying there. (Don't worry
that was near Clifton Forge.) We found the house in
excellent condition, and the kitchen well equipped.
Hope we can return some day! Thanks! (from Guest Book - Nov 2004)

We had such a lovely stay here at Sunrise. The view is
spectacular and the weather held out nicely. The
mountain air was so crisp and clean. It was a
refreshing change from normal suburbia. The locals were welcoming and answered our questions with
ease. This charming cabin became like a second
home to us. The bathroom magazines were especially
entertaining. We did our best this weekend to really
connect with nature. We did not succomb to the evils of
television. The drive up was so lovely, it only adds to
the charm of this place. Who knew you could find such
lovely places nestled in the mountains. All in all, we

We enjoyed 3 nights and 4 days here at Sunrise Farm
-- such a beautiful, peaceful place it is...breakfast each
morning was spent gazing over meadows to the
mountains and watching blue herons, pileated
woodpeckers and others (indigo bunting, wrens) fly by.
Every day brought a new adventure. Our group of 5 (2
from Louisiana and 3 from North Carolina) arrived in
the late afternoon, unpacked and then found ourselves
at The Varsity for supper -- good sandwiches, casual
atmosphere and full of locals. A pleasant experience,
and just what was needed after our 4 hour drive. We all
very much appreciated sleeping in the cool air from our
hot, humid home climates. The next day we spend
visiting shale barrens in the George Washington
National Forest - 4 botanists and a 2-year-old climbed
shale landscapes in search of interesting plants (of
which we found many) - and relaxing at Sunrise Farm
(while the 2-year-old napped.) Later that night we dined
at The Waterwheel Restaurant in Warm Springs - a
nice treat with friendly service. On Sunday we packed
lunches and headed to West Virginia to visit the
Cranberry Glades - an incredibly beautiful and unique
section of the Monangohala National Forest that is
home to northern hardwood forests and this cranberry
bog full of cranberries (of course), carnivorous plants
(pitcher plants and sundews), spruce trees, bog
rosemary, ferns galore, and many other special things.
A boardwalk leads you on a very easy hike through this
amazing little remnant of artic vegetation. Well worth
the 1.5 hour trip, even if you're not a botanist! We also
hiked a trail to an overlook where we could see the
glade & Cranberry Wilderness below. On our way back
to the farm we stopped at the Valley Supermarket in Hot
Springs, bought supplies and prepared ourselves a glorious feast on the
grill. We dined on the deck and admired the tranquil
view. We've been so comfortable and relaxed here -
thank you, Jon and Justine, for providing such a
wonderful place for friends and family to gather and
enjoy all the sights, sounds and smells of a country
summer. The Farm is so well equipped we did not
want for anything, and our 2-year-old daughter really
enjoyed the toys (and the pigs, cows and sheep down
the road!)

Overall, we had a really good time in Millboro Springs.
We were a family of 8 (4 from Canada, 2 from Trinidad
& Tobago and 2 from Virginia) and we found there was
a lot to do! We began our stay by visiting the Jefferson
Pools which everyone found extemely relaxing -worth
the $15/hour. Afte that we went up to Douthat State
Park to visit the beach. The beach was full of people
and there were many lifeguards up and about.
Although none of us swam, we enjoyed ourselves
playing beach volleyball. The only problem was the bug
attack. The following day a few of us went on an
exhausing hike (10 miles in total). It was a good time
with some good sights, but our feet felt like jello. At night
time we all went to the Douthat Park Restaurant for
Karoke Night. We had so much fun. The DJ was
extremely nice & we were probably singing every
second song! Everyone was so friendly and nice -- we
loved it!....We also spent some time visiting The
Homestead (WOW!) and a few stores. In the evening
we went for a Moonlight Canoe Ride, which was also a
good time once you get the hang of it. In the night, we
spent a lot of itme playing board games - which
provided many laughs. All in all, it was a great time, but
it's too bad the rain didn't hold out so we could have
worked on our tans. (from Guest Book - July 2003)

My family and I had the priviledge to vacation at Sunrise Farmhouse this past August (2004) and it was one of the most wonderful experiences we were blessed to share. We loved the comfort and openess of the house. We felt very safe and at home - spent time cooking and eating as a family, something that is rare to us due to the work schedules we keep. Each morning greeted us with the beauty of the sunrise in the surrounding area. The view is beautiful...mountains, blue skies... nature at it's best. I was very happy that we had chosen Sunrise Farmhouse as our vacation spot. We traveled all over the surrounding towns. Enjoyed great shopping and sightseeing. We loved our visit to Douthat State Park. It is so well organized and beautiful. The people we met were all very warm and friendly. We enjoyed great weather...each day we spent at Sunrise Farmhouse was beautiful and breathtaking. It reminded me of the countryside in Puerto Rico...very green and luscious. I guess I am saying what my whole family has stated since we returned home...we wish we were still at Sunrise. That is saying alot since we hardly travel so far by car...but this trip was worth it. I would love to return sometime in the future and I am certainly recommending it to anyone who has a love for the quiet and blissful peace of country life. I simply loved it.
