We so enjoyed your lovely home The grounds and location were ideal for celebrating our parents' 50th wedding anniversary as a family. We took nature walks and enjoyed the patio and garden each morning as we ate our breakfast. We hope we will have the privilege of returning someday to enjoy again this wonderful historical home.

We love the house! What a great place to gather with our two sons and future daughter-in-law. Each day we took the ferry across the river for a different adventure. Our evenings found us cooking on the grill and enjoying the beautiful yard. Our morning hike through the woods even wore out our dogs.

Cliff- It was wonderful waking up to birds chirping, trees swaying, and crickets singing...The house was an experience itself...We felt as if we were living in a different era...one much less complex and beautiful.

Stepping through your front door was like stepping back in time! We could almost hear the rustling of hoop skirts in the hallway as we made ourselves so very comfortable with the conveniences of modern times. How many generations of children's barefeet have padded across these wooden floors? There are so many wondrous places for the imagination to wander....Lightwood has been a magical experience which we will never forget. Thank you with all of our hearts.

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in the home and enjoy your beautiful furniture and decorations. The home and grounds are gorgeous! While attractive and comfortable for adults, you've also managed to make it considerably kid-friendly, as well. Our family came here to celebrate our parents' 50th anniversary and it was the perfect place. The location allowed us easy access to Busch Gardens, Water Country, and Williamsburg. But staying in this house allowed us also to enjoy family meals each evening and some game-playing time during a rainy afternoon. Lightwood is beautiful and we're thankful you share it!

This home truly is magical! I have to admit, you read all the comments about Lightwood and wonder if this place is as terrific as everyone claims--well, it is! We spent a mini-extended family getaway here and were really sad when it was time to leave! We explored the house and the kids loved all the "nooks and crannies," played "catch" in the garden, ate yummy grilled food while the kids played on the playground, rode the ferry to Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. But the most important memories are of the quality time we spent as a family. The TV came on only once, and for just a brief moment. Lightwood is magical because it encourages and enables family time--quality family time. This will always be a treasured memory!

| What a wonderful vacationplace for us all, including the 3 toddlers! The pictures really DO represent the locale very accurately...the colonial experience all around was enjoyed by all, and we all got into the period history, in this house and with the help of our relatives who participate in the williamsburg "re-inactments and storytelling". This colonial property was just the icing on the cake, providing us with privacy and the rest we needed to get going the next day. This vacation provided the variety of things to do thats needed when you have pre-schoolers; and the weather cooperated which made our Busch gardens/waterworld trips very refreshing. We may return for next year! |

B. Family Gathering--We all came together from California, Pennsylvania, and one even flew in from New Orleans. From the moment we drove through your beautiful white gate we felt we had entered "another world"--completely enchanting and charming! We excitedly gathered to "walk through each room" picking out our rooms with glee. We absolutely loved our time, whether sitting around the beautiful historic dining room, or doing puzzles in the living room listening to the crickets chirp. The peace and quiet was so restful to all of us. We had a wonderful family time that will be treasured for years to come, removed from all the hustle and bustle. Loved ALL the toys. Thank you for letting us share this wonderful home. God Bless you.

Dear Cliff and Joy-We survived this long winter anticipating our Spring Vacation in Williamsburg with warmer weather and a trip back to our colonial history. But this visit back into our history was made all the more special and real because of the love and care you put into Lightwood House. This was a beautiful trip for us to a period and time that gave birth to our great nation. Thank you for opening your house to us and sharing this magnificent locale. We had a blast!! God Bless.

The S. Family all had a wonderful time in this colonial home. The children loved doing their "morning chores"--pretending to gather eggs, feed the pigs, tend the garden, and hunting with their wooden guns. We enjoyed every room in this house--even having a church service in the foyer using the harpsichord as accompaniment. All of the attention to detail on the choice of artwork, books, and furniture was much appreciated. God bless this house and all in it.

We had a wonderful week going back in time in this beautiful colonial home. We are a homeschool famiy with six kids and every one of them (19 down to 1) loved this home. Our second daughter, J., is graduating high school this year, and this was her senior trip. We dressed up in colonial costumes and cooked period foods. This will be one trip that we will never, ever forget. We have memories that will last for a lifetime--not to menion all of the history lessons learned. Thank you for letting us stay here! This house is a treasure.

The M. and K. families escaped to the past and some good fun of old. A.K. and her daddy entertained us with eighteenth-century sounds from your keyboard. A.K. endeavored to catch an ever-escaping butterfly in the flower/herb garden. Hiking around your gorgeous estate didn't reveal any fauna, but we thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful, sunny day in full flora. You property is much more kid friendly than we imagined--we could have left a lot of gadgets at home. Hope your other visitors have as much fun as we!

Hi Cliff, You've rendered a great number of people a great service by your painstaking renovation of this fabulous historical home, and making it available for people to discover and enjoy. Living a bit of the past is more eloquent than a thousand explanations. In this day of ever accelerating frenzy, it is a real godsend to look back at how our forefathers lived their lives.

We had a wonderful long weekend at this beautiful house. We took a nature hike, played in the backyard, cooked delicious meals, and spent a lot of time around the dining table, just talking and laughing. We are 10 friends who met in graduate school at UVA and don't get to see each other nearly enough. This house provided a fantastic retreat for reconnecting and catching up. We had children in our company, too, and they also loved exploring the house and grounds. Thank you for allowing us to spend this special time in this lovely old house!!

| My family stayed at Lightwood House to celebrate my parents' 50th Wedding anniversary. When the comments say that the house is a destination in itself, they are exactly right. It was my mother's favorite part of the trip. Cliff has taken wonderful care of this home and is a very accomodating host (in absentia, of course). We enjoyed the Surrey House restaurant, Colonial Williamsburg, and found that the Yorktown Riverwalk was a somewhat overlooked but great sidetrip. The ferry ride can also be a wonderful break at the end of the day. We are already looking into coming back! |

| What a wonderful vacation spot. The kids really enjoyed the uniqueness of the house and we all loved the hiking trails. We took many long walks. Also a great set up for dogs with the fenced in back yard. We brought our dog crates and set them up on the back porch while we were out during the day. The best part of the house was the kitchen and dining room. It was nice to be able to cook meals and seat 8 people around the table. We also like the ability to plan our trip for a long weekend (not requiring an entire week stay) and having linens very well stocked. Thanks for having such a nice place to bring families! |

What a wonderful and memorable vacation! We took advantage of the herbs in the garden and the grill for a few family feasts in the dining room. There was a pow-wow down the street that we were lucky to enjoy, and the rain from the day before we arrived made nice mud-deer tracks all over the place! Some of the nicest memories were made sitting on the back porch just enjoying each others' company. Thank you for letting our dog come--he had a ball. Love the wildlife--frogs on the windows and spiders in the garden.

| We stayed for a week with two families including four children ages 10-17. Everyone loved the property and enjoyed the many delicious meals we prepared in the well-appointed kitchen or on the grill located in the elegant patio area. We found the house location very convenient to Williamsburg area attractions and the kids enjoyed every ferry ride. We appreciated the helpful write-up about the house and the local area as well as the welcome call to fill us in on the unusual locations of some light switches. Thanks to Cliff and Joy for opening their home for a wonderful week rental. |

Dear Cliff and Joy, What can we add to the comments in this book! This is the most special place! We've all fallen in love and wish we could stay here forever. Our 8 year-old loved the loft bedroom and balcony. Our 15 year-old loved strolling about playing his guitar. Our 12 year-old loved reading on the living room sofa. J. loved grilling, champagne at patio table, reading in wicker chair on porch. I loved every view from every angle--endless snippets of beauty! Our dinners rivalled any Williamsburg setting--and all private! We strolled the garden, had a two-hour woods walk. Idyllic. The house interior is gorgeous, homey, gracious, comfortable--to die for! Thank you for the little flower vases everywhere. I love the books in the bedrooms! This is certainly the most wonderful place we've ever stayed on a trip. Thank you!!

| Dear Cliff and Joy, My husband and I, as well as the three other couples that stayed at Lightwood are all Revolutionary War reenactors. We could not believe that we were staying in a home we might have lived in. (Plus all the modern conveniences that we are use to now.) One morning very early, dressed in my 18th century shift, I was having a cup of coffee by myself in the dining room with the fireplace on. I put together in my mind how the furniture would have been arranged and how many children might have been born there. I wish the walls could have talked to me. The house itself is a treasure, but to be in an area of such diverse recreation, museums and living history sites is unreal. We all decided not to turn on the TV but the two year old won out. We will return without a doubt. Thank you, Bill and Marilyn 3/25/08 |

| I found Lightwood House online purely by chance in the winter/early spring of '07. Immediately, I contacted three other couples - all of us, long time Revolutionary War reenactors, and explored the possibility of us sharing this house for a week in the spring of '08! It was a year in the planning and when finally we all arrived at Lightwood on March 15th, it took our collective breath away! When one enters the house, one feels as if the master and mistress simply stepped away, perhaps traveling to Williamsburg for Publick Times, and asked you to watch over their home for them. Lightwood House is an experience! Everything you see in the pictures is there, and more and words are difficult to find to express how we all felt staying there. On our reenacting weekends at home, people are always coming up to us and saying.."You make history come alive for us!"...but we were humbled by the experience of staying here. It is Cliff and Joy who gave us a piece of history! To take some literary license from the writings of Vincent Starrett, the most noted Sherlockian scholar, in his book "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes"...Lightwood House will ever remain for us..."in a romantic chamber of the heart...in a nostalgic country of the mind"...where for us, it is always 1775. |

My husband and I, along with our daughter, son-in-law, and 1-week-old granddaughter spent our Christmas together here. It was magical! We love the cozy beds. Pondering the memories of all those residing her before us. How many other babes have been held and loved in this home? To look out into the world through the old glass panes is a special experience. The sheer wonder of all the exploration available to us here at Lightwood will not soon be forgotten. Our pictures of opening our Christmas gifts from underneath your tree and our wonderful Christmas dinner, including our traditional cherry chocolate cheesecake and pecan surprise bars prepared in your warm and cozy kitchen. Lightwood has proved a perfect base for our ten-day stay in Virginia. The house was welcoming and home-like from the first step through the front door. The children enjoyed the garden and house, and having plenty of toys has proved an added bonus. We enjoyed running the trail most mornings through the forest and taking it in turns to clear the path of cobwebs! We certainly hope to return in the future to further explore the area and historical ties between our birthplace (England) and our current residence.

Thank you for the wonderful trip back in time. As born and bred city dwellers, we enjoyed the romanticism of living in an eighteenth-century house with the modern conveniences of today. Though Lightwood is only 247 years young, you have beautifully restored it for many generations to come. As I am writing this on the dining room table, there is a sense of history and curiosity as to the hundreds who have passed through these doors and walked on these grounds. We greatly appreciate your loving work and hospitality.

THE NEW CANTERBURY TALES-- Six people came from near Canterbury in Kent And to Surry, Virginia, most happily they went To visit Jamestown, where the country was begun And Yorktown (lost in 1781). We saw Busch Gardens and the fort of Smith, Staying here in the lovely house of Joy and Cliff! We plant our flag in soil here to claim back for the Queen, For Lightwood and plantation are the best place that we've been. Cliff and Joy,
My sister and I started planning our trip to Lightwood House last summer. Your home and the property exceeded all of our expections. I had an even deeper appreciation for Lightwood after talking to you and hearing all the work you put into this home. Our children loved playing outside, and the weather was perfect. After visiting all the historical attractions in the area, it was very nice and relaxing to return to the quietness of Lightwood. Thank you for the use of your beautiful home.

Your wonderful house belongs in a story book. We four siblings and spouses had a marvelous time. It was a fun place to stay and see the Historic Triangle (Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg) and the Queen! We had an extended family cookout one day and the grandchildren enjoyed all the toys, both inside and out. What a great grill you have. Our hope is to return in several years when we gather again.

Cliff and Joy: Your spacious history-rich home was comfortable for a family of 11 before and after our busy days of exploring. The kids enjoyed the outdoor play area along with all the toys in the upstairs bedroom. We also enjoyed the peaceful nature surrounding your home. We saw deer several times along with turkey and a large woodpecker. The flower and herb garden will make a wonderful addition to your home. While here, our family also enjoyed several of the area attractions-Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, the Zoo, and Living Museum. Thank you for sharing your home and this beautiful area with us. We hope to be able to return some day soon. P.S. The fireplaces are a great touch to the home. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Williams: I had a great time at your house. When I got here, I started exploring. On the 2nd story, we thought we saw a basement. We found the lock to it, and we opened it. It was just another staircase leading to the 2nd story. (I call it the secret passage.) One of my favorite sights is the armor. How did you know I love knights and armor? I also love the Corinthian columns at the foyer. The French horns were also awesome. The view at the top floor into the kitchen was fantastic. The lock on the door leading to the foyer was awesome. The fireplaces kept us warm. The rifle in the dining room was neat. I wish I could live here. Thank you for letting us stay here.

| My family and I just spent a couple of days touring Williamsburg and the James River for the Christmas season. Our experience was all the more enjoyable staying at Lightwood. It was like living in colonial times with the authenticity of our surroundings. The period furniture coupled with the natural beauty of the setting made us anxious to come home each evening to sit by the fire and get in the spirit of Christmas! It was easy to imagine a visit from George Washington or Thomas Jefferson at any time... Great place and thoroughly enjoyable! I highly recommend Lightwood and plan to return. |

My husband and I spent this past week savoring the quiet beauty and almost mystical peacefulness at Lightwood House. No matter where we wandered during parts of our stay, whether to Williamsburg, Yorktown, Smithfield or parts lesser known, it was such a treat to come "home" to Lightwood. I felt a sense of awe each time we strolled up the front walkway. Every possible comfort was there, admist the treasured history and architectural splendor. Thanks to Cliff and Joy for this glorious opportunity. |

This house and its setting is so beautiful we hated to leave. As I sit here at the dining room table, I can actually imagine what it would be like to live the life of a hardy early Virginian. Then, with the flick of a switch or the pulse of a jacuzzi, one can be instantly transported to a modern existence. Thank you so much. We had a great time.

Dear Cliff and Joy--Our stay is coming to an end, but I cannot leave without proclaiming my love for your house and surrounding land. It is "truly magical," a place apart from the mundane of everyday life. We cannot adequately express our appreciation for all your hard work to spread your "magic." It is a shame there are not more people in this world with your appreciation for beauty, for you have created real beauty not often found in this day of newer everything! To step back in time, like we have for the past three days, is a dream come true for me. I have had a "love affair" with the state of Virginia for the last 30 years, but never before in all my visits have I felt so a part of this colonial period in history. This was made possible by staying at "Lightwood." You are truly an artist, lover of history, and a man of vision. I will return often as this is truly a "special retreat." Tonight as we came home on the ferry, the blazing February sun set in all her glory, and 15-minutes ago, the moon (full) came up over the little shed visible from the charming back porch!! We see it as an omen telling us to return. Thank you for an experience we will never forget.

You have created a treasure here in this house and property! It has been our pleasure to enjoy it, if only too briefly. The play yard was a big hit as was the toy closet--so many treasures. There was not enough time to explore all the paths through the woods--but what we did see was wonderful. | Wow !!! If you wish to vacation in the most relaxing surroundings you could find and yet be convienent to all of Southeastern Virginia's many attractions this is the place. Cliff and Joy give you accomadations beyond that of many 4 star hotels, you name it the house has it. My wife and I have vacationed all around the country and never felt so at home when not at home. The dogs loved the nature trails and chasing wild turkeys every morning. In the evening you are visted bye more tree frogs than you can count and even an owl or two, yet Williamsburgh & Smithfield offer top quality restaurants if you chose not to cook in the modern kitchen only a stones throw away. If Cliff every decides to sell I will be first in line. |

| Our family traveled from Illinois, New York, and Kentucky to meet for a week at Lightwood. What a treat we had when we arrived! The beauty, the peaceful surroundings, the well equipped and beautifully furnished house, and the graciousness of the owners all added to a wonderful week spent in Surry, Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. All of us left saying this was one of our best family weeks ever!! |

Dear Joy and Cliff, Little did I know when we first spoke that your home would be the perfect touch to our vacation plans for visiting the birth of our nation. I know the kids have learned so much about how things have really changed over the centuries. The boys had a blast discovering all the "secrets" of the home. Thank you again. It's perfect!!

The private setting, the rural atmosphere, the 200 ft. plus Beech trees, the proximity to historic sites, the authentic (to the tee)18th century dwelling. It's so difficult to single out the most superb character- ristic of Lightwood. Perhaps the coolest feature for us was returning from Jamestown via the ferry and drivng past the acres of spring wheat, corn and strawberry fields enroute to Lightwood. Totally relaxing and the only way to truly appreciate the beginnings of our wonderous country.

Dear Joy and Cliff, Thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful treasure of a house! It is one thing to entrust visitors with a property that you own but to do so with a house that you have put back together by hand is truly generous! We have had a wonderful time at Lightwood, and it has made our Colonial Williamsburg experience even more rewarding!

We stepped back in time to enjoy the "Colonial" life. We couldn't have asked for a more ideal, serene setting as well as a beautifully restored home with all the conveniences we needed. Our shelties, Kodi and Cali, loved the yard and had a vacation all their own. Thank you so much for allowing us to bring them and for sharing the fruits of your labor to restore this home and open it to visitors!

As a family of 2 adults and 3 children we spent a wonderful five nights at Lightwood. We have stayed in many self catering cottages over the years, but this has to rate as one of the most attractive and best equipped - we wanted for nothing. A property truly nestling in the woods, with some good walking trails straight from the door. The hammock was particularly popular! It's the thoughtful touches such as the Virginia peanuts and sparkling cider on arrival, and all the toiletries in the bathrooms that turn the house into a special place. And yes, we used the jacuzzi! Being across the river from Jamestown and Williamsburg was a bonus - the area was less developed and we looked forward to the ferry ride each day, watching the osprey, herons and bald eagles. Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown - as Brits we came to explore a bit of history. And finally Busch Gardens - a holiday with something for everyone! We'll be back!

Dear Cliff and family, We have had the most wonderful family vacation. It's the first time our children requested to spend a day simply at our vacation home. Your house is simply magnificent and we certainly enjoyed our time with you as well! Thanks for bringing your young helper...our son loved making a new friend. Thanks so much for welcoming our "furry" children, too. We'll be back again.

| Wow, what a fantastic 3 nights we had in Surry! The house was an absolute delight for the entire family (we had 6 - 2 kids, 2 parents, 2 grandparents). We hated to leave each day to sight-see. The location was perfect - an easy drive to everything in the area. Cliff was the perfect host - he went out of his way to make us feel welcome, and helped us find an excellent mechanic when we had unexpected car trouble. Don't even think about coming to the Williamsburg area if you can't stay at this wonderful old house!!!! |

Cliff and Joy, It's hard to thank you for making it so difficult to go back to Washington, D.C., after such a wonderful time in your charming house! We loved it under the sun, and we loved it under the rain! It was a perfect introduction to life in the Americas in the 18th century and a great reminder of U.S.-French friendship!!

So.... the conversation goes like this. "M., how long before we come back here again?" asks S. "3 days," replies M. That pretty much says it all. 2 adults and 5 kids truly loved and lived in this HOME for 3 SHORT days. All the space was used and enjoyed. Everything from antiques to satellite TV, from badminton to muffin tins. Thanks for sharing... We'll be back. This comment has been copied from the Lightwood guestbook

In all, I found Lightwood to be remarkable in most every aspect, from the atmosphere it retains from the 18th century to the small country town that is near it. Thank you again for this unique experience. W.R.
Lightwood is a very good place to work, surrounded by the work of previous years, evident, spirited, and a continuum. The three board dining table is best for spreading out a writing project; the kitchen light is best for painting. N.R.

After visiting Lightwood for Christmas this year with my family, I now have a new love! Lightwood is as close to heaven as you can get! If you have an appreciation for our American history, this place is a "must see". It is very private and secluded, but just a few minutes to modern civilization.
Cliff has left no stone unturned in his labor of love. Enjoy all the ammenities of modern living coupled with rich reminders of history!
What a unique and unforgettable place! Thanks for everything.

It was a real joy to have a few days to spend in your wonderfully restored home. You've done a great job with it. Our family enjoyed the house and surroundings very much. The weather was so good and warm that we had plenty of time to enjoy the back patio, the hammock and the children's play area, as well as the beautiful interior of the house. On New Year's Day I think it was 70 degrees. Although we experienced no ghosts, we were startled by the effect of the gate post, ivy, and flowerpot by the outdoor lights. Through the windows, it looked like a sentry on guard. We hope we will be able to visit again. The G., G., and G., families.

| This property is simply incredible. We met another family the week before Christmas. There were eight of us but plenty of room. After a little snow, the house looked like a postcard. The car ferry to Jamestown/Williamsburg was quick and easy. The owner was a pleasure to deal with and I can't wait to schedule our next visit. |

Some date in November.., Sorry we forgot what day it was. We were lost in time. Enjoyed what you have done with your home Having a home from the 1830's I understand some of the work you have done. So many pickets for the fences! Impressed with the door construction. Plan to redo our doors when we go home. The gas fireplaces were terrific. Also appreciated the many homey touches... soap, lotions, even chocolate chip cookies. Hard to resist. We are looking forward to returning for another visit. Liked the cozy room over the dining room with its secret staircase down. The children enjoyed the play area. Many thanks from the S. and V. families.

My Wife and I, and two other couples spent a wonderful holiday weekend at Cliff and Joy's beautiful 18th Century Plantation home. The photo's available on the web page don't do justice to restoration work and natural beauty of this country home. It is very convenient to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, but secluded enough to make you feel if you are experiencing part of the regions history.
Cliff and Joy have done a marvelous job of incorporating the necessary modern conveniences while maintaining the natural beauty of this lovely historic plantation house.
Thanks for the memories!! |

Hello Cliff & Joy!
Our family had a wonderful time staying at Lightwood this summer. We really enjoyed all of the personal touches throughout the home. Lightwood is large enough that our family from both Ohio and Virginia could all stay there together. We loved having dinner in the dining room and breakfast on the back porch. It was is close to Willamsburg and local historical attractions that we visited Colonial Williamsburg 3 times during our stay (to see Cliff and Stephen sing of course!). Thank you so much for opening your home to us. We hope to visit again. |
