This is the best vacation our family has ever taken. The villa was excellent, Paulina was wonderful. I now expect mango's for breakfast every morning. Gambino arranged everything perfectly, and Gus sent us on great tours. We highly recommend the Jeep Safari tour, and do it your first day, it really set the tone for our whole week. Ask for Rafael as tour guide, he was excellent. Bring school supplies, notebooks, pencils, solar calculators, small toys, baseballs - you'll be stopping a school or small village, those kids really appreciate it. Don't bring candy, dental care is not very good in rural areas. We also did the Catamaran tour - sailing, snorkeling, Presidente beer and Brugal rum, what could be better? The Dominican people were exceptionally friendly. They especially appreciate your attempts at Spanish if you aren't fluent. (Like me) I bought a spanish phrase book a couple of weeks ahead of time and practiced wth my 16 year old daughter, who has had 3 years of Spanish. It really helped with Paulina and around town. A little "Buenos dias" or "Como esta?" really goes a long way. People here don't make a lot of money, so tipping really means a lot to them. We tried to be as generous as possible. On the beaches people will try to sell you things, if you don't want it just politely, firmly say "No, Gracias", they're just trying to make a living. Cofresi is a great little town, Villa del Sol is a short walk from the beach, small shops and restaurants. You can't beat the Ahora's outdoor bar 15 feet from the surf. We walked around day and night here and felt completely safe. Joe Thompson was extremely helpful and sent us great information to help us plan ahead. Hasta Luego!

We just returned (July29th-Aug.5th) from the Villa del Sol and had the best vacation that we have experienced yet. Paulina made the most delicious meals and was a joy. Gus, Gabino and the other helpers made sure we scheduled the tours we wanted. The Jeep Safari was excellent. I would suggest to buy the CD of the tour. It captures the whole experience. The people were warm and helpful. The restaurants had excellent meals and were reasonably priced. My daughter loved the cable cars, I loved the horseback riding on the beach. It was the best.
We had 6-7 people stay comfortably. The beach was great. The kids loved snorkeling.
Thank you all for a great week. We will miss you. We will be back.
God Bless you all,

Our February trip to the Dominican Republic was the perfect getaway from the unoredictable cold of February in the NorthEast.
With two kids under 5 years and a pregnant mom, it was great to have the convenience of a house plus the help of Paulina to keep the food coming! An added bonus was having Ocean World just a short walk from our cozy street. Though the immediate neighborhood was low-key, it was easy to go out for any meal and, of course, the ocean was just a short walk away. We will definately be returning!

It's been a week since we got back from the Dominican Republic, and we are missing it terribly. Your villa was the perfect getaway! Paulina, Juana and Gambino were a pleasure to meet. They were so helpful: all our questions were answered, we were so well taken care of, and the food was nothing short of paradise.

One of the best things we got to do on the trip was to climb (or be pulled up) seven waterfalls, which was preceded by a really educational tour of some interesting aspects of dominican life (grinding coffee in a wooden mortar, dominican sculpture and art, cockfighting, and a HUGE bull). I would strongly recommend everyone who visits to go on the tour, and to bring gifts and stationary to the children you will see along your way. We didn't bring anything with us and regretted it.

Thank you so much for accommodating our huge party of 11 and being a great correspondent. We are so grateful for having had the opportunity to stay at Villa Del Sol. I have been recommending it to my friends and we can't wait to make another trip back!

We just returned for a stay of over two weeks at Villa del Sol with our four-year old son. A wonderful time was had by all. The house is comfortable, Paulina is great, and the beach is beautiful. Joe (the owner) was very helpful and accessible as we were planning our trip, providing plenty of good information and guidance, and Gabino (on-site manager) also could not have been more helpful. We also enjoyed the nearby restaurants and attractions, including a day at Sea World where we had a really nice time. In fact, we found it much better than we expected, so all-in-all, it was worth the steep admission fee. We did a city tour of Puerto Plata which was also worthwhile, but bear in mind that the Cathedral and central square in Puerto Plata are currently closed (boarded up) and this fact was not mentioned by any people or guidebooks consulted.

In summary, all I can say is if we return to D.R. (and we probably will), we would definitely stay again at Villa del Sol.

Hey Joe-
Thanks for an awesome week! We stayed the week of December 1-8 and had a total blast. You made the whole rental process very easy and the info you provided was very helpful. We had our entire vacation planned before we arrived!

Here's some info for people considering staying at Villa Del Sol: There were 6 adults and we had plenty of room. Paulina and Maria were absolutely fabulous. My brother and his girlfriend are veggies and she made a special little dish for them every night. The beach was beautiful and very relaxing. I highly recommend taking the jeep tour. The tour as a whole was a lot of fun and the waterfalls are something I will never forget. Horsebackriding was also awesome and totally worth the $30 you pay for it. The cable car to the mountaintop was nice, but do it on your own- skip the rest of that tour.

I would absolutely go again and you should too:)

Villa del Sol is absolutely the place to stay if you're going to the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. The house works for families and couples.
We stayed there with three adults and
6 children and had plenty of room.

The staff are both wonderful and helpful! The house is beautifully maintained and any issues (though we had no real problems) are addressed immediately. The food made by the housekeeper, Paulina was delicious!

The property is in a safe and well kept neighborhood. The beach is within walking distance as well as a few stores. However, you are close enough to Puerto Plata to get there whenever you desire. I highly recommend traveling there.

Joe, the owner, is an absolute delight to deal with and provides you with very detailed instructions and information to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

We would definitely stay here again, and plan to do so very soon.

Thanks, Joe for a memorable and great vacation!

Hola Joe!

We had a great time in the DR. It would have been helpful if one of us spoke Spanish; it was a challenge communicating with Paullina at times.

But she was great, and cooked good food! We all enjoyed the Villa and don't have any complaints except that the DVD player did not work.

We ate at Chris and Mady's and enjoyed the food and service was nice.

We loved the jeep safari/waterfall hike! We recommend others do this one.
We enjoyed the beach in Cofresi and spent the majority of the time lounging and swimming in the ocean. One day we explored further up the coast (east) to another beach. It was appalling to see how much trash was on these other beaches and was a real disappointment. But this made us appreciate "our beach" even more!

We also did the cable car to Mt. Isabella in Puerto Plata- we would recommend it. We chose a clear day and spent a while on top hiking around. There were great views. We went to the Amber Museum and would not recommend it to others as there is not much to see.

Puerto Plata was a bit disappointing primarily because it was very hot/humid and people kept trying to sell things to us, calling out "cheapy, cheapy".
Overall, we enjoyed the trip and the Villa.

Thanks!

Joe,

Thank you so much for the use of your rental house in Confresi.. Magdalena and I had a wonderful time. Our only complaint is that we didn't have or planned enough vacation time there. Your staff was very friendly, helpful and hospitable. Especially Paulina. Her meals and drinks were the best. Gambino was also very helpful and provided us with information and assistance in some transportation needs as well... We also enjoyed in general all the tours-excursions, and or course the culture... All in all a terrific place and time. Hope to rent again next year, take care.
Happy holidays,
Ruben.

This was a terrific vacation! A wonderful relaxing time was had by all. Paulina's food was terrific (pina coladas too). She is a real treat to have around.

Just a couple of comments to add:
**The waterfall tour is fantastic. It is a bit challenging though so I would not recommend for small children or non-swimmers. If you only do one tour, do this one. We went with Jurassy Tours and our guide was "Ray". Ray, also known as "Bevis", was really knowledgable and kept us in stitches all day long. Also, bring some money to tip your guides. They work hard to provide you with a really enjoyable day. I would also strongly recommend getting the DVD they sell at the end of the tour. The camera guy will drop it off for you the next day. It's really a great way to relive your tour. Absolutely worth the $40.00.

**Bring candy or some little trinkets(small notebooks, pencils, etc.)for the children you'll encounter while touring. They are darling little kids who are grateful for any little thing you give them.

**Try Le Papillon Restaurant, just across the main road, in Upper Cofresi. A great place to go for a special dinner. We went for a birthday dinner and the food was terrific and very reasonably priced. The service was great too.

All in all, it is a wonderful place to vacation. It's a great place to tour or just lay in the hammock! We can't wait to return!

Hi Joe -
Thanks for all the information and assistance prior to our trip. That and Taryn's great article in the Washington Post really set (and managed) our expectations. The house was great for our family of 5 (3 kids - 11, 10 and 8). Paulina made the bulk of our breakfasts and dinners, except when we had to get up early for excursions. She was as lovely as all have said, and always set up beautiful platters of tasty food, just as we had asked for it to be prepared.

Some thoughts for future guests:
**Don't even think about driving yourself unless you are Dominican.
**Enjoy the tours, but be prepared to drop some local currency on trinkets and tips (we did two tours and they bring you by a fair number of "shopping experiences") - just go with the flow - vendors depend on us tourists and yes the stuff isn't all that great, but just set some cash aside and spend it - we changed $20 each for each kid and let them haggle for as many tchotchkes as they wanted. Also, after barefoot heavily muscled guides had pulled our three kids up 5 waterfalls we felt they deserved some kind of recognition.
**Bring water shoes. The beaches are lovely, but there is a fair amount of rocks and seaweed. Having good water shoes made the warm, calm seas that much more enjoyable, and for the waterfalls it beat having to rent someone else's shoes (ugh!!)
** Unless you want to buy a timeshare, beware of the friendly guys promising you free pina coladas up by La Hacienda resort. They are nice, but quite persistent!
*** Use cash. Most restaurants that take credit cards charge a hefty (16%) service charge.
All in all a great vacation, even though the immigration official called my daughter a chicharron (crispy fried piece of skin) as we were leaving. (Have I mentioned sunscreen?)

Dear Joe -

The fact I haven't written since our return to tell you what a grand time we
had at your house is caused - I think - primarily by the so far lasting effect
of Dominican time .... We truly enjoyed our week - the comments from the
critical teens reflect it best - they all centered on wanting to return - soon,
and for a longer period of time so they could explore more and venture out into
different areas.

And of course, Paulina was the real treat, it has been rough to readjust to life
without her. She was amazingly patient with our range of Spanish abilities and
did a great job introducing us to Dominican cooking.

So, all went well (the only exception was the food poisoning that my ever so
cautious husband picked up during the layover in San Juan - can't blame it on
the DR though - thank you again for sharing your home with us.

Hi Joe,

We had the most fantastic time at your lovely villa. I've done lots of
traveling, and as you can imagine, I've gotten many fantastic travel
recommendations from my coworkers at National Geographic. But this was
truly one of
the most enjoyable vacations I've taken, and the staff was incredible.
We
felt lucky that Cofresi was almost deserted -- it must be the off-season.
It's remarkable that with Sun Village on one end and Ocean World on the
other, it's not more of a tourist haven. How long have you had a place
there?

The best part, like you said, was the warmth and generosity of the
locals. One night, we mentioned to Mady (of Chris and Mady's Restaurant)
that we didn't have a DVD player to watch a recording of our Jeep Safari.
She got on the phone to Chris to see if their broken one was working yet.
When she discovered it wasn't, she offered to have her sister drive over
from a neighboring town to drop hers off. We were floored.

I'd love to return soon. Thanks for all your helpful information before
the trip.

Best,
Taryn

Hi Joe,
We've been back from our vacation at your Villa in the DR about a week now
and I've been meaning to drop you a quick note. My family and I really enjoyed
our stay (aside form the RAIN - 4days!). We did a lot of exploring, went to
the beach and got a great kick out of Paulina! She was great, kind, a
wonderful cook and lots of fun to talk to. In fact we bought her a birthday present
(it's next week) and I was hoping you knew her address so we could send it to
her.

Hi Joe - thanks for sharing your house with us! We really didn't have too much trouble getting in - we were just a little late. Everyone was so helpful, Paulina was wonderful and Julio made sure we were all taken care of. We really appreciated everything they did for us. We told Paulina we would be back to see her. Is possible to send her some pictures of all of us? We took some and told her we would get them to her. We brought home at least 6 pounds of coffee! The house and staff are so organized - you have a great place there. All of the information was helpful, we had traditional food every night and breakfast to die for!! Pass on our gratitude to Lou and everyone at the house. We will be back soon!

My two sons and I just returned from a week at Villa del Sol, Playa Cofresi. All the comments that preceed this one are applicable. Great value, great, out of the ordinary way to live the life of an upper middle class Dominican family on a beach town that's not a tourist trap. Be ready to accept the fact that A/C in the master bedroom works when the power is on, which was 5 nights of the 7. That the cable might or might not be on. That roads are terrible and drivers worst. It is worth it. The scenery, the colors and the breezes are out of this world. The people deal with adversity in a kind, relaxed way. They smile and find solutions. The beach is mostly for locals -- the best part. Laid back, great way to escape into another land, another era. I might do it one day and not come back.

Hi Joe,

We're back from a lovely week in Playa Cofresi at Villa del Sol.
Everything was wonderful - especially Paulina. We adored her (and her
daughter) and I think the feeling was mutual. She really made the visit
comfortable, desirable, yummy and memorable. I had as much fun with her
as I did combing the beaches for coral and shells. She is a fabulous
cook - we asked her to cook local fare only and all meals were
delicious.

Actually, everyone associated with the villa (Julio, Gambino, Lou,
Rochelle and Gus) was helpful and friendly. We also fell in love with
the woman who runs the mini mercado on the beach - a true doll!

The galleria is heaven on earth - especially with a Paulina-made pina
colada in hand!

Thanks for all of your help with planning the week. It certainly is a
nice spot and a great mix - local color with comfort. The weather on
Thursday and Friday caused the cancellation of two scheduled tours but
we persevered somehow!

I would like to give Villa del Sol and the location a positive rating.
How do I go about doing that?

Again, thanks for all of your time and help.

Kind regards,
Mary

PS We returned home with among other things many, many pounds of
Dominican coffee as well as a coffee maker. Tomorrow morning...cafe
Dominican!

Comment Text: I spent the first week of Feb. 2004 in Villa del Sol in Cofresi, Dominican Republic. What a week! The weather was close enough to perfect. The house is comfortable, charming and topped by a room size balcony with 360 degree view of lovely tropical trees -- the only one I can name is the palm. Birds chatter, breezes blow. Paulina takes care of everything. She does the cooking -- and is quite good at it, keeps the place spotless, and makes you feel welcome. Julio keeps everything in working order. Cofresi beach is about five minutes away on foot. Between the house and the beach is an open-air bar where the food is good, the drink is cheap, and the bartender amiable. I can especially recommend the lobster and the spider crab. On the beach, there are trees for wimps like me to sit under and avoid the sun. The water is lovely. And those of you with enough energy to leave the beach can find plenty to do --visit Ocean World, take a catamaran tour, whatever. My only
regret? I didn't extend my stay.

We recently stayed at the Villa del Sol
where we enjoyed a lovely holiday. The
people were the best. Paulina our cook
and housekeeper was a treasure. Her breakfasts were incredible served with
coffee I can still savor. Dinners were
always waiting for us when we got home
from what ever adventure we'd been on.
Adorned with flowers and beautifully
laid out they were always good.
Julio was a steady resource of information and we feel him to be a friend. Gabino helped us with transportation and with money changing.
We were conscious that he was looking
out for us. Lou & Rochelle the managers
saw that our questions were covered and
that our needs were met. We loved a safari day that Gus arranged for us through villages and over rivers to see
a mountain waterfall and see coffee being ground. We enjoyed a day at the beach in Sosua and the cable car ride
through the clouds to the mountain top.
The house roof had an open terrace with
a hammock and chases to enjoy the breezes. Our time there will be well remembered. The people we met were very
special and their warmth made our time
very happy. Thankyou to you all.

Our stay at Villa del Sol this past summer was simply wonderful. I'm not one for loud, touristy places. Playa Cofresi Cove is perfectly situated off the beaten path in a charming and safe resort yet everything you could possibly need or want is close by - dancing, live music, great food, shops, banks and, of course, the peace and quiet of the beach. Gabino was so helpful with everything. He went out of his way to chaffeur us around town for phone cards, groceries, airport pick-up, money exchange. My favorite part of the trip is the incredible meals Paulina makes for us. And it helps that she's very patient with my Spanish! A week at Villa del Sol is an affordable, stress-free and luxurious vacation which I recommend to everyone.

The house was fabulous!!

We loved it. My favorite part was the patio on the roof. I loved sitting
up there. It was nicer than I had even expected. I would definetly consider

vacationing there again!

And Paulina was so great!! We just loved her! Saying goodbye was so sad!!
We wanted to bring her home with us!! She was a wonderful cook. She always
had our meals waiting on the table, wether it was when we woke up or when we
had come home from a tour. It was fabulous!!!

And all of the others were great as well. Julio went out of his way to help
us many times. And Gabino was great with setting up our tours and arranging
that sort of thing for us. And everyone was so pleasant! It was truly a
vacation to remember!!

My daughters and I stayed at the Villa del Sol for a week at the end of April. Julio picked us up at the airport and delivered us safely to the villa which we found stocked with fresh fruits and snacks. Paulina took us grocery shopping and prepared many delicious meals for us. Rochelle, the manager's wife, was a great resource, and helped arrange a guided tour of Porta Plata, including the Amber Museum and the Cable car ride with fantastic views.

Remember to exchange any pesos before you leave the DR. I had trouble trying to exchange them at home.

Overall a very nice, stress free, alternative to an all inclusive resort vacation.

My girlfriend and I were guests of the renter. We found our 5 days there to be very enjoyable. There was plenty to see and do... We recommend the Cable Car/Botanical Garden in Puerto Plata and the Safari Tour of the countryside and waterfalls. Paulina, the cook/housekeeper does a wonderful job. The people are very friendly, but do expect to be tipped! Travel by taxi was a little expensive, but necessary for anything other than a simple day at the beach (make sure you find one that speaks English and stick with him!) Overall, a nice getaway.

The staff kept us happy. Paulina and my wife shopped for groceries in Puerto Plata at found the variety and prices more than met our family's needs. We have 3 teenagers who thoroughly enjoyed the location as they could go to the beach wnenever they wanted. We used the local mini mercado and a fantastic restaurant is only a short 5 miunte walk from the house. we wlected to contract the local taxi and went to Sosua, Playa Grande on our own. The excursions that are offered more than met our requirement.Villa del Sol is a great find. I wouldn't hesitate to reference it to anyone. We rented the del Sol and Caribe villas for a family reunion of 16. The coordination between the cooks and service for shopping, planning and preparing the Dominican meals worked out very well. Bena, Teresa, Paulina and Julio were very accommodating and helpful. We all enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of our Domincan stay. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as cooperative, and the seas were too rough for any snorkling trips.

Just back from a stay at Playa Cofresi. We, my wife and I and our two adult sons experienced a great stay in the DR. Our accomodations at Villa del Sol were very comfortable, it was exactly as advertised. What was understated was the deightful Paulina, the maid and cook extrordinaire. My son speaks Spanish which admittedly gave us an advantage. We asked to have traditional Dominican meals, they were exceptional.
Julio, the driver who picked us up at the airport volunteered to take us to Santiago to a baseball game. The game was a playoff game for the Dominican championships. Terrific game and entirely different atmosphere than a game in the States. Real passion for baseball.
There were few complaints maybe the largest was that there is not an abundance of hot water for showers.

We prefer this kind of experience, not the all-inclusive resort.
