We stayed at the Maine Stay for the 2nd half of our honeymoon in Belize and it was wonderful! Drew and Karen were very accommodating and helpful, and the cabanas were perfect for us. It was a perfect spot to relax on the beach and the people of Placencia were SO nice. It was the slow time of year down there when we were there, but we still had a great time. We sould definitely recommend staying at the Maine Stay.

THE best vacation ever. Everything looked like Drew's photos and other pictures of Belize that I found while checking out the country before we booked. White sand, coconut trees on the beach, turquoise water...The Maine Stay sccommodations suited us perfectly - the kids had one cabana and we had the other. The fully eqipped kitchen had all the cooking utensils we needed to cook meals for 5 people, and the grocery store was close enough to get anything we needed. The fact that we had groceries already when we arrived was great! It was monsoon season when we stayed but none of our planned day-trips got rained out. It only rained at night and the days were bright and sunny. We'll definately go back!

We had a great time in Belize. The Maine Stay was just what we wanted with the privacy of our own pier, beach, and beach toys (especially the glass-bottom kayak. Everyone we met in Placencia was so nice and friendly and there were many nice places to eat both traditional and local cuisine.
Drew and Karen are very hospitable. Be sure to visit them and say "hi' to the parrots. We would definitely recommend the Maine Stay!

We had a wonderful experience at The Maine Stay. From the very beginning Drew and Karen were so accommodating. They helped us plan our time in Belize and made great suggestions on dining out, where to buy food for eating in and also about the great things we could do while we where there. They were very helpful but not intrusive. We felt very comfortable there and would definitely go back again. We had a wonderful time in Belize with the help of our hosts at the Maine Stay

The Maine Stay was great. We have a family of 4 and the set up at the main Stay is perfect. It provides plenty of space and comfort, two bathrooms is great and having a washer/dryer means you can pack light. Having a well-set-up kitchen allows for dining flexibility while there are several good places to eat within a short drive - the Maya Beach was excellent!! The road was being paved during our stay which will make staying at the Maine Stay even better. The beach front and pier were very nice and our Kids (7th & 8th Grade) loved it. The Travers were excellent hosts and provided a lot of good tips regarding our stay in the Placencia area as well as traveling around Belize in general. We have been to over 30 different countries and have to say that Belize was a pleasure to travel in. Not crowded, friendly people, easy driving, good food, lots to do. Highly recommend Belize and the Maine Stay

The accommodations were terrific, but the best part of staying at The Maine Stay was the wealth of information and assistance provided by Drew and Karen, both prior to the trip and after our arrival. That made the difference between an "okay" vacation and a truly memorable one. All their advice was "spot on." We like the non-hotel admosphere of the cabanas, and the ability to make meals if and when the mood struck. They even have a couple shelves of books and rainy day games, if you as so inclinded. We left our the books we had brought with us and read a few of theirs.

The Mainstay was everything we expected and more. It was perfect for us, with our daughter and her husband being the other couple, we all had our privacy. The beach, fishing, our yard c/w with all the little extras made our stay there totally enjoyable. Drew and Karen are very accommodating hosts. We wouldn't hesitate to stay with them again if we are lucky enough to go back to Belize.

We had a great 9 days at the Maine Stay. Drew, Karen, Joyce and the rest of their team were wonderful, helpful, pleasant, and kind. We spent the bulk of our time at the cabanas or in the village of Seine Beight. The accomadations were perfect, we could make our own food. We felt very safe and enjoyed the local animals that wandered by....I'd have taken all of them home!

Thank you Karen and Drew for a wonderful trip. You helped us prep before we got there and that was a big help. We hope to be back next year!

Take good care!

The Maine Stay was absolutely perfect for two couples. We stayed for 10 days and enjoyed every minute of it! Drew and Karen were very welcoming and helped us plan some of our adventures. There are many activities close by such as jungle tours, snorkeling tours and river tours. When we weren't on tours we relaxed at the near perfect cabanas. The cabanas are much more amazing in person than the photos, almost too good to be true! The people of Placencia are very kind and helped to make our experience memorable. We couldn't have asked for a better vacation. Thanks Drew and Karen!

We just got back from Placencia. We loved it. Cabanas are well just a few meters away from the ocean, they are well equipped, clean, spacious, safe. the entire setup is really nice. There are a lot of amenities, games, canoe, fishing rods, etc. We enjoyed a drive from Belize City: mountains are spectacular.

"we spent 10 days staying on the peninsula and LOVED Placencia. Tips: The Purple Space Monkey is a great place to eat/drink. Their jalapeno poppers are out if this world. Also, the Pickled Parrot has the best food in Placencia - 3 nightly specials, delicious pizza, and quesadillas. I'm sure everything on the menu is delicious too. The driftwood is a pretty sweet bar to check out too....
P.s. If you're looking for an awesome place to stay about 4miles from Placencia is Seine Bight and there you will find the Maine Stay Cabanas. traversbelize dot com check it out...best accommodations you could ask for!"

We just returned from an amazing 10 days at the Maine Stay. Everything surpassed our expectations! It was the perfect place for relaxing and enjoying the peninsula. The cabanas are SO nice as well as the deck and yard. There are endless hammocks and lounge chairs, fishing equipment and lots of floaties to use off the dock. Drew and Karen are amazing and helped us out so much when we got "stuck" there because of hurricane Ike. We would all return in a heartbeat. THANKS!!!

Homeowner Response:
Just to clarify... Hurricane Ike closed their intermediate stop airport in Houston, TX and in no way affected Belize! Thanks so much for the GREAT comments.

We had a wonderful 10 days summer vacation at Mainestay. Drew and Karen were tremendously helpful and knowledgeable with selective activities and adventures. We would highly recommend the Mainestay, a home away from home experience with laid back atmosphere and Drew & Karen's caring attitude! Placencia is rich with culture and friendly Belizeans!

Drew and Karen are wonderful and extremely helpful hosts. Placencia is a great location and the people were the best!! Thank you!

Well, after 10 nights at the Maine Stay I have to say that the set up is absolutely perfect for two couples looking to get away from it all. The cabanas are situated on a nice private beach North of the airport - only 10min drive into the sleepy tourist town of Placencia. I would highly recommend Drew's start up shopping list as it makes the settling in process exactly what it should be..........easy! Drew and Karen were fantastic in helping set up tours and have a good level of knowledge on where and where not to be! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a vacation get away - the plethora of hammocks and easy chairs with the ocean 20meters away says it all! ENJOY!

We had an amazing vacation at the MaineStay in
mid-March. The weather was wonderful - sunny
and tropical but not too hot. This was our third trip
to the MaineStay and we love it even more every
time we go. We stayed in the new set of cabanas
this time and Karen & Drew did a fabulous job
designing them - all the comforts of home. I'd be
happy in either one. There are so many fun things
to do down there, but the part we enjoy the most is
relaxing at the cabanas, with the beach and the
pier, and visiting with Karen & Drew. We can't wait
to go back!!!

Karen and Drew couldn't have been better hosts!
Our family enjoyed the cabanas very much. Our
three daughters really liked having "their own
house", as they stayed in the adjoined cabana.
Trips to Placencia were always fun, especially going
to Tutti Frutti, but we had the best time just
relaxing at "home" in one of the hammocks on the
veranda. Karen and Drew were so gracious in
showing us their home, gardens, and aviary, which
were so very different than our own home. Drew
was great at booking a tour to the Cockscomb Park,
which was incredible. Our stay was throughly
enjoyable and the fact that we were away from the
big city of Placencia forced us to enjoy one anothers
company and have fun as a family. The girls loved
it and so did we!

Our family spent 10 wonderful days in the cabanas in mid-April. The cabanas and the beach have exceeded our expectations. Before this trip we were a bit apprehensive about traveling to Belize with two kids (8 and 4) but everything went perfectly fine. Snorkeling, Monkey River tour, a trip to the Cockscomb reserve, visiting Maya ruins, caves and swimming in the Blue Hole (inland) Park ... - the whole list of things to do would be too long.
Drew and Karen are wonderful hosts. Drew was extremely helpful with planning and arranging out trips in Belize. The little botanical tour by Karen is one of the highlights of the vacation.
We miss Belize, kids are already asking when we are going back!

Karen and Drew Traver's have thought of everything to make your stay an experience you won't forget. The cabana and surrounding garden are stunning. There is a nice coral head off the dock with good snorkeling. The kitchen is great to cook in and eat out under the pergola with a view of the ocean. We've been all over the Caribbean and this place is special. Can't wait to return.

The cabanas are more amazing than the website could ever show! Placencia was fantastic, but what made our vacation so great was definitely the cabanas. Our family had 7 people traveling so we took both sets of cabanas. It was perfect for us--enough space to be together as well as to have some privacy. The weather was impeccable. Drew and Karen Travers were wonderful hosts. They set up tours, trips and even lent us some soy sauce for a stir-fry! I highly recommend the MaineStay cabanas...I wish I could go back right now!!

When you look at these pictures you are looking at exactly what you see when you stay at these cabanas. You are right on the beach right on the ocean! The water is fabulous and Belize is glorious. We had everything we needed and then some. It was like being at home only on the beach. The bed was most comfortable, the cabana was clean and fresh. We had plenty of cookwear and bath wear. The owners of The Maine Stay have far outdone themselves and they just keep making it better. This has been my most positive experience using VRBO.
If you're looking for the beach, and A+ comfort, you won't go wrong at The Maine Stay.

My wife and I came down for a week at the end of October/beginning of November. Perfect time. Not too hot, very comfortable and no big crowds at some of the near by activities. Placencia and the cabanas were the perfect home base for a fanstastic visit to the best Belize has to offer. While at the cabanas just resting and relaxing was great and if you needed to go into town to pick up a few things or get a bite to eat, it was a quick 15 min ride. Highly recommend getting a rental car and exploring the area. The ride back into mountains to go to Jaguar Paw to do the zip line and cave tubbing is well worth the ride and the zip line/cave tubbing is a blast. Stop at the blue hole which is right on the way. Very cool. We also went to the nearby Mayan preserve. The hike to the top of the bluff was tough but a great workout and well worth the fantastic view. On the way back stop at the waterfall and natural pool. Outstanding and if you go during the week no one is there but you. I don't need to go into the fantastic diving and fishing but for those of you like myself who are spearfisherman, it can be done as long as you go out with a local. Drew can hook you up with Kevin. All in all it was great and we would certainly go back again.

My husband and I spent a week at the cabanas in June. We were a bit skeptical as we left the airport and started the drive to Placencia. Our apprehension grew as we traveled! However, when we woke up the next morning and went swimming and snorkeling off of the pier, we knew we had made a good decision. Drew arranged a day of fishing and snorkeling with Kevin for us and that was an awesome day. He cooked us the best fish I have ever eaten. We had intended to go again, but weather didn't permit. We caught enough fish to eat the entire week! We drove to Xunantunich-what an impressive sight. We also took the Monkey River trip, as well as did a day of cave tubing. We ate at a couple of great restaurants recommended by Karen, but cooked most of our meals right at the cabanas. We really enjoyed the privacy and convenience of the cabanas and enjoyed sitting on the pier at night. We were not able to swim at night due to wind and rain, but the breeze was great!
Drew and Karen were a wealth of knowledge before and after we arrived. They were even willing to change our reservation at the last minute due to flight cancellations. I could have stayed in Belize for another week easily, and that is unusual for me. The people were very friendly and we enjoyed shopping at the grocery stores and markets. We brought home about 15 bottles of Marie Sharps (we collect hot sauce) and some great Belizean spices to cook with. The only complaint I had was the bumpy road to get to Placencia, but we even got used to that! Belize was not what I had expected but definitely worth the trip!

My husband and I stayed in the cabana in early August, 2007, with our three children, ages 12, 9, and 7. We were in the newer of the two properties available. This rental has separate sleeping quarters which are ideal for two couples or a family with children. The interior is well-planned, very clean, and includes modern appliances, A/C and cable TV. The landscape is well kept and we spent a lot of time outdoors laying on several hammocks. The lighted dock is steps away. The water is shallow enough at the end of the dock for kids (ages 8+) to jump in and still have their heads above the water. During our stay, it was not uncommon for locals to be using the dock, but there is a locked gate between the yard and the dock. It is a 15- to 20-minute drive south to Placencia, so you would need to have a car. The owners live across the street. We found them to be very friendly. They welcomed us warmly and recommended a great place for lunch on our first day. Despite the fact the owners live close by, they respected our privacy yet were available to answer our questions and/or provide information on local vendors. I would recommend this property to my friends.

I am a Peace Corps Volunteer living here in Belize and have been lucky enough to get to know the owners of the MaineStay. Drew and Karen have built a very special vacation house on a truly rare and coveted piece of land. During my time in Belize I have been able to visit all the major vacation spots and I can attest that the MaineStay is by far the most accommodating and original. The MaineStay has everything that someone coming to Belize would want. Besides all the amenities of home (internet, AC, full-kitchen, etc.) it is also centrally located in the country allowing one to very easily make day-trips to any corner of the country. My family has just returned to the States after spending a week at the MaineStay and they said repeatedly said that it was one of the best vacations they have ever had. I would recommend the MaineStay to anyone looking to get away from the hotel bustle and into a relaxing home-like atmosphere where they can feel on their own yet still very connected to all the activity of Belize.

I just returned from the best vacation I have ever had. The cabanas are 1000 times better than the photos can show. Drew and Karen were awesome hosts, and have really created a paradise. We went as 2 couples and had plenty of room and were very comfortable. We did a sail/snorkle day, the men went deep sea fishing with Kevin, We drove to Xunatunich one day. It was just an awesome vacation. The cabanas have everything you will need, and I cannot say enough about the beauty of the property and Placencia. The locals are truely the nicest people I have ever met. I will defanately return and would only stay at The Maine Stay.

My husband and myself and our 20 year old son stayed at the cabanas December 10-17th and had a fantastic time. The weather was beautiful...don't be fooled by weather forecast on the internet as it only shows Belize City. Placenica is 3 1/2 hours south of Belize City. We followed weather up to time we left for Belize and it showed rain forecasted for the entire week. We were so pleased to find sunny blue skies and very warm weather (mid 80's to 90's) when we arrived in Placenica. The cabanas are absolutely beautiful and perfect for a family. We stayed in one cabana and our son in the other. The grounds surrounding the cabanas are beautiful and the water's edge is only a few feet away. You can snorkel the coral bed and fish right off the pier. We rode bikes into seine bight and placencia, took a fishing/snorkeling trip with Kevin. Did the monkey river tour and visited with the locals. We had the wonderful time with all of the activities, but also thouroughly enjoyed just hanging out on the beach & water right in front of the cabanas. We felt right at home with all of the locals and found everyone to be genuinely friendly. Drew and Karen were very helpful and full of good information. You will not be disappointed with your decision to stay at the cabanas...

My husband, best friend and her son stayed at the Cabanas June 20 - 27, 2006. What a wild ride! After two planes and a very long car ride from Belize city, we were wondering if it was all worth it. After a good night's sleep, we woke up the next day and experienced beautiful beaches, exceptionally friendly locals, and great adventure. Our stay in Belize was fantastic. Drew was a terrific host. The cabanas were great (he isn't kidding when he said you can sleep with the doors wide open). The breezes from the ocean were incredible. The only regret was not spending a little more time with Drew, he seemed to be a wealth of knowledge and insight. There was just so much to do and it seemed like not enough time to do it.

Hope to see you again some time Drew! Thanks for the experience of a lifetime!

My girlfriend and I stayed in the cabanas late-Feb/early-March. They are spectacular. Drew and Karen are great! We spent the first 4 days doing nothing but relaxing at the cabanas, an activity for which they are perfect!!! No cabin-fever feeling like you can get at some resorts or hotels (which is why I prefer to rent private homes when I travel). Be sure to take advantage of the veggie truck that comes on Sundays and Thursdays -- it's super-fresh food at a reasonable price.

The Maine Stay is a 2 room, 2 bath with lots of deck space. Perhaps, better for a couple or family with kids rather than 2 adult couples because someone sleeps in the living room and kitchen area. The owners live across the street and are very knowledgeable about the area and friendly. The beach is right in front, but, at times, had a fair amount of ocean debris (plastic bottles, etc) depending on the tides and winds. Heavenly when the winds are blowing!

It is about a 15 minute drive to Placencia, so a car is handy although there are taxis available. There are many snorkling and diving excursions from Placencia. Drew will help you make reservations. Monkey River boat ride is fun too.

The kitchen is well equipped. Tried to buy fresh fish each day, but with no luck. Truck with great pork chops and veggies stops at the house 2xwk. Very good and convenient. Other grocery stores in Placencia as well as stores for souvenirs and good restaurants(lots of chicken and beans and rice). Yes, and even a gelato store.

We just got back from staying a week at the The Maine Stay Cabanas and we had a great time. Drew and Karen are wonderful people and their cabanas are really first class. I met up with my parents from Australia, and my sister and her boyfriend from London, for a belated Christmas family reunion in January 2006. We had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend the accommodation to anyone. It was perfect for our family reunion, but also would be a good getaway for couples or for a group of friends. Drew and Karen were delightful hosts, and the cabins are right on the water. Belize is a magical place, everyone should get down there before it becomes over-crowded with tourists!

We searched many rentals for 6 months before deciding to take the trip to Belize. When we came across the Cabanas we looked no further and booked the first open time available. When we arrived, Drew and Karen were right there to greet us and brought us right over to the cabanas. We arrived to the most beautifully lit up site. There was lighting on the cabanas, along the pier and even the beautiful palm trees have been staged with low lighting. We would sit out at night under the palm trees and look out at the ocean, listening to the sound of the waves. We travel all around the carribean each year and have stayed in beautiful resorts but none of them have anything on the cabanas. There is a lot to be said about having your own private resort on the beach. We took our two girls, 6 and 18 who got to share their own private cabana with bed, couches, bathroom and their own access to the deck and beach. Our attached cabana too had all that the girls had but included an entire kitchen set up with everything you will need. Drew and Karen really want to make your stay as comfortable as possible and asked us to let them know if there is anything they should add. We have not been able to think of anything they already haven't. The local fisherman come around everyday and will bring you fresh catch fish and lobster if so desired. We fished most days ourselves right off the pier. We had a lot of fun going into the town or village. The locals are so friendly and helpful. We sailed and snorkled, went on the Monkey River trip and just simply made several trips into town to try out different eating spots. There was nothing we didn't enjoy. We usually travel alone but now that the girls have had a taste of the carribean, they want to come back every year. We will definetly come back to the cabanas. My youngest made friends with the other little local girls her age. My girls have gained a great appreciation for their own lives back at home, more than my words can ever teach them. Oh - and aside from the most wonderful time and experience we had I guess I forgot to mention that it rained 90% of the 9 days we were in Belize. Don't let this scare you because it was highly unusual but the point is, we can only imagine how our time would have been if it were sunny. We will be back! Thank you Drew and Karen for making our stay as wonderful as it was.

Renting the cabanas was the best travel decision I could have made. We arrived to the most gorgeous lit-up oasis, just after dark. We rented a 4x4 in Belize City and were so glad we did! It made arriving to our cabanas even more dramatic after coming off of the dark bumpy hwy! My husband and I (30-somthings) brought my two teenage nieces and we felt like millionares. Each cabana is beautifully decorated and stocked with everything one would need for a week of fun: bikes, kites, fishing rods, games, floats, sand chairs... coffee maker! So much more than I ever expected and we used all! As the owners suggested, we slept w/ the doors wide open each night, waking to the sunrise each morning. Wow... I felt safe in our private paradise and it was like coming home each night after our excursions. Thank you so much Drew and Karen for your hospitality and assistance before departure! You guys rock!!! No doubt, we will return someday. Hope you'll have room for us! Next time no excursions... just fry jacks and our little pier:)

Placencia and the Maine Stay really are a tropical paradise, and the Travers are first-rate hosts. We stayed over Christmas and were completely wowed by the cabanas--no pictures can do them justice. The trees are so green, the water so blue, everything just gorgeous. The fishermen really do set their traps right off the beach, and we bought 4 live lobsters from one--such a great dinner! We ate dinner out mostly, though. Habaneros was tasty and very affordable, not part of a resort so none of those extra fees, and the best part was that we bicycled there (with a flashlight--gotta watch out for those potholes!).

Placencia is such a friendly area, and the Travers' were a god send. We had a big airline debacle on the way down, and Drew volunteered to reschedule our puddle jumper since we were in a difficult position to rearrange our plans. They have great information about the area and were just so welcoming.

If we visit Placencia again, we would definitely stay at the Maine Stay again, and highly recommend it to anyone.

We stayed in these cabanas for one week and it was pure paradise! The
cabanas are designed and situated perfectly.

If you want to take a leisurely swim, or go snorkeling, there is
beautiful coral right off the pier (which is such a luxury!).

The inside of the cabanas provide the perfect combination of
simplicity and comfort. The kitchen is all full-service. I cooked several
meals in there with great ease. Also, there is ample deck space for
lounging and watching the sun rise from the hammock.

After looking at the additional pictures provided in the link, we were
convinced that these cabanas would suit us quite well, but in fact it
was far better than we imagined!!!
