| We had a wonderful time! The cottage is cozy and well appointed and located on a truly lovely slice of shoreline. Our hosts were welcoming and had taken great care in setting the cottage up to accomodate guests. Be warned that once you visit here you will dream of coming back again and again--and we have. And, even though we did drive to Campobello and Bar Harbor and through Acadia National Park on several daytrips, there is plenty do right there on the premises or within a short drive of Millbridge. I have some wonderful photos of the rocky waterfront from in front of the cottage and we enjoyed a long (and vigorous) walk along the shoreline hopping over the big boulders that line the shore. I recommend going at low tide so you can collect mussels and check out the tidal pools if you wish. There is a Park very close by called McClellan and you can wander along the shoreline down to it and walk back onto the road for the return trip for a nice walk. We also just liked sitting on the screened in porch, relaxing and watching the waves and the lobster boats go by. We drove to several Parks close by that have great trails like Rogue's Bluff and Petit Manan (I think Petit is where we saw a bald eagle). The longer drive over the border to Campobello is an absolute must do. We did the hike along the cliffs there that ends with a truly breath taking view of the craggy shoreline and ocean. We also drove to Bar Harbor on Mt Desert Island, had lunch in town, shopped for our obligatory "Maine" t-shirts and hiked one of the area trails. We drove the 27 miles Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park--just gorgeous. The weather was another big plus. It was so nice when we were there and it made the vacation even more enjoyable. It was warm and comfortable during the day and "sweater weather" at night which was a welcome change from our hot and sticky August weather in Maryland. One bit of advice: do a little research before going so you have a decent driving map, maybe a map of Acadia and an idea of what Parks and towns you want to visit and what hikes or other activities like kayaking or cycling or swimming you want to do. There really is so much to do and a little planning went a long way for us. We still have not rented canoes or gone swimming at Echo Lake or gone cycling in Acadia--2 things to plan to do this year! |
