The Shinnick/Murphy family has rented the Clawson's 'Old Nantucket Beach House' property for 5 of the last 8/9 summers. Some of our best memories as a family have come from our summertime visits there. We love Nantucket and the property is perfect for our family reunion based visits to the island. My family of (5), (kids-- 11, 9 and 6) immediately claims the rustic beach house while my parents and in-laws share the main house. Perfect; everyone has their own space. The kids can have the run of the rustic beach house with easy beach access.
Located on the East short of Nantucket, it is extremely private, yet the property has great access to town and its' many offerings by not being far off the paved roadway (300-400 yards). Walks on the beach may put you in the company of some of the most notable people in the world. My wife was thilled to have a discussion with Katie Couric a couple of years back.
The wide open main house is perfect for family gathering (meals, social time, crafts etc...). There is a book collection for summer readers with toys and games for the kids. The working fireplace is very nice for early or late season rentals. The wrap around porch is Nantucket as far as I am concerned. The view is spectacular.
The rustic beach house is within 150 feet of the countless miles of absolutely pristine private beach. There are kites and games for the kids and adult sports gear in the storage garage. The rustic house has a very nice bedroom, accessory kitchen and a small bath that allows you to just be "at the beach". No need to leave--not even to go 75 yards to the main house. That is being "at the beach".
Personally, this is my favorite spot on the planet. I have traveled the world and have yet to find a nicer place to enjoy myself and my family.
Suggestions while on Nantucket:
1) Coffee/Muffins in Siaconset ---a bike ride away. 2) Lunch or dinner (multi-times) at the Summer House. 3) Offshore fishing trip --which actually ends up being 1000 yards off the front porch if you decide to fish the east side of the island (strippers and blues). 4) Sunset drinks at the Wawinet (then dinner at Toppers). 5) Four wheel drive to Great Point (rent a Jeep at the Wawinet or get a permit for your vehicle). 6) Fly a kite for 8 hours and forget what day it is. 7) Dinner at 21 Federal downtown (Get the swordfish). Best meal ever; unforgettable. 8) Shop-- I am not a shopper. But, you can not help but take something local home with you. 9) Entertainment downtown is local; but very fun. Make sure to get out and take advantage of the summertime.
The property is the key to enjoying Nantucket. The house is very nice. The Clawson property is spectacular. 13 acres seems like a hundred.
Enjoy. Remember to sign the guest book.
