We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this fabulous house in Penedo. We were full of admiration for the loving way in which it had been restored and decorated – it was an absolute delight. The valley was green, lush and sunny (being July) and the closest beach Praia Adraga was our favourite of any visited – the food at the beach restaurant was very good. We were grateful for the advice of the previous writer in terms of car size as the local roads were indeed incredibly narrow.

This comfortable and spacious house gives visitors a view of Portuguese village life (Almocageme, Penedo & Colares) which is as yet not destroyed by mass tourism. The lovely, secluded Praia Adraga, while popular with local people, has not been overrun. The casa is well situated for sight-seeing other than at Sintra, and destinations such as Mafra and Obidos are to be recommended. Rent a COMPACT car - streets are extremely narrow, steep and winding, and parking can be challenging. Staying here gives a very satisfying experience of this part of Portugal.

What a beautiful house. The five of us fell in love with it and wanted to take a number of the artefacts home! We spent Christmas 2003 here, had a great time at Lawrence's Hotel on Christmas Day and went to mass at Colares on Christmas Eve. Its a great base from which to explore Lisbon, Sintra and the coast. Well worth it.

Last spring, I stayed for five days in this incredible house, which has lovingly and artistically restored to provide the feeling of living within a place of sculptured beauty. The ancient walls, thick and white, invite a feeling of well-being; the lovely decor and furnishing offer rich visual pleasure. I spent time each morning reading in the garden, surrounded by palms and flowering vines and blossoms of all color and fragrance, spent the day traversing the nearby countryside by foot and by car, and evenings making simple but sumptuous meals in the well-appointed kitchen. Each night finished with a starlight stroll around the old village and the promise of the morning's fresh bread hovering over there, across the small plaza, at the baker's house. Lucky will you be to stay even a short while at Vivenda Santa Iria. I was!

I stayed a month at this quaint casa. It's up in the hills about 8 miles to Sintra and very easy to get around the area. You do need a car and be in good physical condition for the roads are very steep. The casa is so comfortable no tv.no radio (no longer true - check web site) no newspaper, and no one to bother you just peace and quiet. I will be returning.

We stayed in this lovely home for two weeks. It was a magnificent location with a chance to experience real Portuguese culture, as opposed to the isolation of a hotel. The area is close to Sintra, which is georgeous, and to various parks where one can hike. It's also within driving distance of several great coastal villages. All in all, a wonderful place to take a family (yes, we took small children) on vacation.

The house and its location in a village close to Sintra is wonderful! I felt at home the minute I entered the house. The attractive garden and view terrace added to the pleasure of our stay. The house is well appointed and has that rare luxury in Portugal ---parking. The restaurants within a few miles are varied and good. Our two weeks provided a great base from which to explore the wonders of Portugal. The area around Sintra is especially beautiful.
