Our stay at The Villetta Mima Vittoria was incredible. Everything about the villetta was just as promised by Michael. This was our first trip to Italy and we wanted to go somewhere wehre we could just relax, enjoy the area and wander around at will. We didn't want to do the "tourist" thing. Everyone was very friendly and patient with us as we tried our best to communicate. We plan to go back as often as possible. We were able to meet and spend time with cousins of mine, spend time exploring farther south and up into the mountains. There were no hidden costs or "surprises" Micheal makes sure you are very prepared to visit Calabria. Sono caduto nell'amore Villetta Mima Vittoria mentre ho scoperto il mio " roots" La vita è molto dolce!

We stayed in the gracious Villa Villetta Mimma Vittoria. The location was perfect for our travels and the beach was the best. We rented a car locally and was able to get around fine in the small sea side village. We went to Rocco's around the corner for fresh produce and had a gelato every night which was a short 2 blocks. The Piazza was great too and very close. We could here the church bells and watch how the village was still untouched in a lot of ways from the hustle bustle. We left early one morning to catch the train to Palermo and the street sweeper was something out of Oliver twist, hand cart and all. It was a great experience and we truly enjoyed our stay. Michael was very informative and Pauloa was very helpful as well. We Love Italy and can't wait to go back.

We stayed at the Villetta in late August 2008. My girlfriend and I were very impressed and have already recommended it to friends. The owner, Micheal, started accommodating us long before we were at the villa. He has extensive and valuable written tip sheets for this region which does not enjoy much travel press.

The villa is quite modern. Air conditioned throughout (though we used it only one night); a beautiful and functional kitchen; DVD/CD/stereo; and candles and modern lighting throughout. It is an up-to-date home.

The most critical necessities are an easy walk: gelaterria e pasticerria; frutta e verdura; restaurants; beach; and supermarket. Be sure to stroll il lungomare, the walk along the ocean, so you can relax and dine with the residents.

We liked Gioia Tauro because it is not a tourist town. We relaxed with no crowds and lived among the Italiani for a week.

Micheal engages a local resident who speaks English well if you need help with something at the villa. She is very friendly.

We highly recommend Villetta Mimma Vittoria.

My husband and I stayed at the Villetta in June 2008 for 5 days. It was wonderful. The apartment was so cozy and very nicely decorated. Michele was extremely helpful with all the information he gives you about Italy and the area including the buses and trains. It was very comforting to hear all the little details about the area and places to go from someone who really knows the area. Paola was very very helpful also and one of the nicest people we had met there. We loved our stay and was also able to visit family we met in Acri. I would recommend staying there to anyone. You will not be disappointed.

I spent a week at the Villetta in February 2008.

Location is ideal to explore Calabria and Sicily. I was able easily able to find and visit the village of my ancestry on the Ionian side.

Accommodations are top notch and as advertised. Within walking distance you will find all that you need including a friendly corner alimentari and a great fresh pasta store.

Michele, the owner, will send you a wealth of useful information prior to your stay, including the best gelateria I have visited in Italy their site is gelateriacesare.it (it is worth the trip to Calabria just for their Gelato).

For a view of vineyards carved into the rocky seashore similar to Cinque Terra, take the drive from Scilla to Reggio di Calabria along the lower road, with it's great view of the straight of Sicilia.

I am looking forward to my next trip to Calabria as a week was not enough.

Walking into the Villetta I had a feeling of beauty and comfort. It is impeccably designed with a marble staircase, a wonderful modern kitchen,
sumptuous bathrooms, large rooms with that unmistakable Italian style. The area, the house, the weather...does it get any better than this? We can't thank you enough for our vacation at Villetta Mimma Vittoria

My husband, two close friends and I recently enjoyed a week's stay at Villetta Mimma Victoria (VMV). VMV's location in Gioia Tauro, a seaside community on Italy's Costa Viola (Violet Coast), makes it an ideal place from which to explore southern Italy, especially Calabria. The owner, Micheal Castaldo, spared no effort to ensure that our stay was everything we had hoped. His attention to detail ranged from providing extensive pre-trip information on the villa, the community, and the surrounding region to ensuring that we felt instantly welcomed by the very helpful keyholder when we arrived. The kitchen is well-equipped -- we enjoyed an on-site cooking lesson and then tested our own culinary talents using ingredients we were able to purchase within walking distance. VMV is pleasantly decorated with an ambiance that's warm and cozy. The washing machine is an added plus for those enjoying an extended stay. Gioia Tauro is an active port community -- we enjoyed interacting with local residents and shopkeepers who were always willing to help us though our knowledge of Italian is limited. From the villa, we were able to make easy daytrips to Scylla, Tropea, Gerace, Palmi and Reggio -- we highly recommend these excursions to other travelers. If you enjoy stunning scenery, interesting history, delicious food, and friendly encounters, Calabria is the place for you. VMV puts it all within easy reach!

"Home away from home" is definitely the best way to describe this gem in this lovely authentic, non-touristy town. Michele is a gracious, attentive, incredibly responsive and accomodating host. The house is stunning with great attention to style and detail. Renting in a foreign country can be frustrating and Michele and Paola went to great pains to make everything user-friendly with personal touches, including calls from both just to check in. The villetta is beautiful and spacious with great extra amenities. The welcome basket of food and wine was a lovely touch and much appreciated. I highly recommend Villetta Mimma and will definitely be back.

My husband took me to Italy in October 2005 as a
surprise for our honeymoon. One of the highlights
was our stay at Villetta Mimma Vittoria.

I highly recommend this beautiful vacation home. I
loved how every detail was thought out and how so
many things were supplied for us. I appreciated the
love and care that was brought to the villa and to
the experience and stay of the guests. It was truly
a home away from home.

After returning from our trip to Italy and getting back to some degree of normalcy, we wanted to write and share some of our thoughts and experiences. After arriving in Rome, we ended up spending our first night in Fumicino enjoying a fantastic dinner at Il Moro before we set out to begin our journey down to Gioia Tauro on Saturday. It was a pleasant drive down to Gioia Tauro. When we arrived in Gioia Tauro we were ecstatic to find your Villetta as the warm inviting place that we had hoped. Paola was there waiting for us with all the candles lit and warmly greeted us. Our first night was used getting groceries from the market where we met Sylvia and then followed by a great dinner at Tre Canali. Once we discovered this fantastic restaurant we ended up eating there 2 more evenings during our stay in town. I don’t know that one can fully appreciate both your Villletta and the town of Gioia Tauro for it charm until one has actually spent some time there. Gioia Tauro is simply a small town that despite its narrow streets filled with cars seemingly parked everywhere and more people then that small town could possibly contain (particularly during the April 25th holiday/Independence Day) somehow works. Our travels took us to Reggio di Calabria twice (once driving on the back roads all the way down to Reggio which lend itself to some stunning sights) where Ceasers became an absolute must stop, taking a ferry to Sicily and driving to Taormina where the Greek theater captured all our imaginations and visiting Tropea for a relaxing enjoyable day. Finally I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special thanks to Pietro for sharing his time in what ended up to be a fascinating tour of the Olive Oil factory. He did a great job of both showing and explaining the process that goes into producing the Calabrian Gourmet Olive Oil. The things that I will never forget about the Calabria region are the people and the food, both of which are magnificent. I can honestly say that meeting the neighbors next to your Villetta was one of the highlights of our trip. Antonio and Corio are some of the warmest, kindest human beings one could ever meet and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment we shared trying to communicate with each other.

What a wonderful trip and we truly enjoyed staying at your Villetta in Gioia Tauro. The time and effort you made in putting together your survival kit/voucher package had more value than we ever anticipated. I don’t know that we ever really new what we were going to encounter during our journey but I think we all came away with one of those precious life experiences. Those are just a few of our thoughts and experiences that I wanted to share and now I’ve got at least a couple of dozen of things that I must get done so I will leave you with about the only Italian words I learned while traveling in Italy…..

Grazie and Arrivederci.

The house was not only well equippped, beautifully decorated, comfortable, but it was also really conveniently located for daily excursions to sights in the region. We were awed by the landscape throughout our drives in the nearby Aspromonte mountains - surprised at how mountaineous and densely forested. Michael Castaldo provided us with very thorough and detailed information on traveling and sight-seeing in the area.

We had a fantastic, magical stay at Villeta Mimma Vittoria in May of 2005! The town and people were delightful and the weather was ideal. Our entire stay in Southern Italy was a trip we won't soon forget. Gioia Tauro is a great little town that really allows you to immerse yourself in local culture and food. Our cooking lesson was very fun and we've been making canneloni here in Texas for our friends and family ever since. We especially enjoyed neighboring Tropea, Palmi and Scilla as well. Messina was breathtaking and a must see.

This is truly a special place. Very modern, comfortable and conveniently located to markets and the train station. The owner went above and beyond to acquaint us with the villetta, the city and surrounding areas. My husband and I spent four weeks here without a car and enjoyed walking all over Gioia Tauro, day trips on trains and returning each evening to our "home away from home". To enjoy a true Italian experience I highly recommend you stay here!

WOW! Just came back into town and saw your package. You really do things right! This is our 3rd experience of renting European properties for vacation and you, by far, have the best marketing and attention to detail. We are even more excited now. ... We may be in New York overnight before heading to Sicily in June. Perhaps we could share a glass of wine if convenient.

Salve,

I just visited your site for Villetta Mimma Vittoria,
and I just had to write to tell you how impressed I was. I was impressed at the wonderful photos and just how many you had of the place and also how well you have put the site
together. Most of all I was VERY impressed by what a
beautiful villa you have - and in such a beautiful
location!

I was so amazed at the beauty of your place and the
location that I wrote to both my brother and sister
and gave them your site address so they can view the
photos. I have family in the Sorrento area. THe next
time we visit there it would be nice also see Sicilia
as we have never been there. Your place would be the
ideal place to stay if we do, so I will keep you in
mind.

You have done a great job on your magnificant villa -
grazie for letting me view it!

Hi Michael,

Well, today I found where the market is - IM assuming it is next to the piazza In that large white building? The walk was great so thanks for the directions. I'll definitely be checking it out on Monday. While I was down there today I walked down towards the sea-what a beautiful view - IM looking forward to taking that walk several times while IM here.

AS far as the olive oil -- let me know how its packaged & what the cost is - I'd like to order it now & have you send it out to Greg via UPS. Let me know if you need a check or a credit card or how payment should be made -- he is very interested in getting some & I would love for him to have it while I was away. ALSO - are you importing anything else? I've had some pasta here that is wonderful & also I want to purchase some olives -- some cheese and perhaps a whole proscuittio if possible -- are you importing any of these items? IM absolutely in love with the bread crumbs in Italy - no more Progresso for me -- they make a huge difference with cooking -- it totally changes the texture of either the meat or eggplant - I'll be sending some of that home also. IM certain my brother Dave will also be interested in purchasing some of your olive oil when I tell him about it.

So far all is good - YOUR fresh rosemary is wonderful & your villa is very charming & cozy - I feel very fortunate to have connected with you & your villa. I do not believe that I have mentioned this to date in our conversations but its very lovely staying here - IT feels very safe. Each day I feel a greater sense of peace & comfort so for that I thank you. YOUR kitchen is also very nice. You did a great job planning it & stocking it with utensils -- the pots are great, the only thing I have had difficulty with is baking - I've recently made a new flavor biscotti -- orange & chocolate chip biscotti - Its MY own recipe & I must say they came out pretty darn good. I used the skin of a blood orange -- which by the way are absolutely delicious. YOU must miss some of the foods that Italy offers?

Thanks for all your help

Be well

Hello,

I saw the add for Villetta Mimma Vittoria in Italy. I was in Italy for the first time last year and met my grandmother who lives in Napoli. It was unforgettable and I vowed to go their annually. In addition to Napoli, I spent time in Rome, Pompeii and Florence as well. I would love to go to Gioia Tauro, the town sounds wonderful.

Well, enough about me ... The reason for my email is to inquire on the rate of the Villa for the 1st week of October. I'm still just exploring my options and after seeing your website, I'm very anxious to go back.

I look forward to your reply.

Michael,

Thanks so much for writing... I'm a bit embarrassed, having looked at your web site. You, Sir, have thought of everything! What a truly amazing site and lovely villa. I doubt if you have much to learn from me.

How did you come to pick the toe of Italy for an investment property? The name is clearly Italian. Is this part of Italy your ancestral home? I assume by your email address that you live in New York now? What an incredible undertaking. I truly admire what you've created. Did you do your own website? I still need to have one designed, so I'm shopping for ideas and resources.

By the way, if you ever want to consider a home exchange, please look me up. Something might be arranged for either our home in the Yorkshire Dales or my condo.

Again, thanks for your kind and thoughtful reply.

Hello! Wow your site is awesome. I have Gioia Tauro ancestry and will travel there in the far but not to distant future and your villa is awesome. Thank you so much for the wonderful pictures on your site. I had never before seen the "street view" of Gioia Tauro as my grand parents left there in 1907 & 1912... I want to bring my mother, age 75 and she would want to go there also.

...Regarding your property, I assume that this already belonged to your family... Having elected to invest in this property you should be pleased with the results...If your current villa is successful, I would be encouraged to acquire a larger property with a garden and private drive.

... the house was comfortable and we found that dining in (necessary due to the holidays) was fine.

...We went to the south and got to Sicily. This should be recommended. We had business in Altomonte and would recommend that your guests also drive north and check out the wine region there...

We stayed for three lovely weeks in Gioia Tauro in Reggio di Calabria. We have been visiting Italy for many years and usually have stayed in hotels, but not for our last trip --- November 20 - December 10, 2004.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay this time because of our experience with the Villetta Mimma Vittoria. We were well taken care of before, during, and after our stay in this small town in Reggio di Calabria. The hospitality of the people was very much appreciated by my husband and me.

We enjoyed meeting the people and experiencing the every day events of the town. The town is also located within easy access to many other very beautiful sites. Each person we met in the town was friendly and very willing to assist us --- even thought we did not speak Italian very well. We did learn some Italian while we were there and plan to continue learning more.

We had the opportunity to see the olive and the citrus havests. Of course, the vegetables were incredible. I personally think the food and the cooking in the southern region of Italy is far superior to the other regions of Italy. The southern region's foods are much spicier. Of course, the wines are matched to these foods.

If you want to meet the people and experience the everyday life in Italy, you want to consider a trip to Gioia Tauro. You will not find a better Villetta for your temporary home. It is equipped with all of the conveniences of a modern home.

Visit Italy and vist the Region of Calabria for your next trip to Europe. We plan to return and stay again at the Villetta Mimma Vittoria.

Take Care and Enjoy the Italian Way of Life.

Michael, Petro and Family,

May the coming year be filled with success and joy. Happy holidays to all.

Sorry I have never responded to you about our trip to Italy and your Valletta but Frank has been fighting the good fight against his cancer. He is a wonderful brave man and we will celebrate our 50th anniversary with a party of 100 friends and family on the 2nd of Jan.

Our trip to Italy has so many wonderful memories that will last me a lifetime.

Words cannot describe the beauty of southern Italy, the gracious and friendly people and your wonderful, comfortable villetta. I cooked most of the meals with the local products. The way Franks's Mother had taught me. Not to brag but they were very good.

Say hello to all your great Italian neihbors from the San Franciscians.

Hello.. how are you? Thanks for the updates from Italy. You have inspired me! (and now you are probably asking "inspired him to do what?!") Well, I have sold my house and am tiding up a few things and I would like to move to Italy for a while and take Italian courses. I have checked out several schools in both Rome and Florence. However, I think for a 4 month stay, Florence may get a little "too small". So, I am thinking about Rome.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks in advance. Say hello to Pietro for me. I hope to be able to say hello to him in person IN ITalian soon!

We booked the villa on the internet fairly late (as we often do)because we wanted to tour the lower part of Italy for a change last summer. Michael was so helpful in all of the information that he supplied and before we set foot on the plane we felt really prepared.
The villa was just as described and beautifully decorated and maintained.
Gioia Tauro is a typical real Italian town with a typical laid back Italian atmosphere. However, in saying that, the people were extremely friendly and there was definitely a warm feeling there. If only the local council did more to advertise their virtues!
Our family of 6 toured the area extensively, thanks once again to Michael and his family for providing valuable information, and what a fabulous area! We liked it so much that we are seriously considering relocating ourselves to this part of the world permananently! Need I say more?
We still play Michaels CD on a regular basis to remind ourselves of a wonderful holiday.
You've done a great job, Michael. Keep it up and thankyou ever so much for all your help, even while we were in your house, you still kept in touch to make sure that everything was ok. If ever your singing career flounders, and I can't imagine that it would, you ought to take up PR!

Year of Stay: 2004
Month of Stay: May
Overall Rating: Good
Furnishing Rating: Great
Beds Comfortable: Good
Kitchen: Great
Views: Fair

Recommended Restaurants Nearby: On the walk down to the beach, there was a very tasty pizza place. I don't recall the name but it may well be the only one "on the walk down to the beach." Yummy Sicilian-style slices. I had a mayonnaise, shrimp and lettuce creation and a more predictable mushroom and tomato slice.

Comments About Comfort: This is a beautiful, very modern villa with catalog-perfect furnishings and decorations! The sofas and TV area were comfortable, the beds were very attractive and more comfy than any other beds we stayed in (although we had bad luck in Italy with beds, all much too hard or too soft). For two people it was a ton of room and felt very luxurious. The kitchen was big and fully equipped for at-home meals, and groceries were quite cheap. Nice tile, fancy bathroom, big master bedroom, huge closet, etc.

Comments About Owners: The owners were incredibly nice and helpful, especially since I didn't notice the prefix on the phone number and woke them up at 6 AM. (oops!)The keyholder made special trips to help us since we didn't have a phone and did his best to understand my decade-old college Italian.

Comments About Location: This is an...odd location... After exploring the town a bit we realized we weren't really connecting with it (people seemed unfriendly or wary of us for some reason, even though we are both part Italian and look it)... we took a day trip almost every day. Tropea was wonderful, Scilla a bit less so but still nice. We even went all the way to Taormina (which took two days of attempts due to wind messing up the ferry schedule), which we loved...

Comments About Views: There are no views from this property...it's right on top of several other buildings and/or the street and we always kept the shades drawn.

Other Comments: Overall, I can highly recommend the extremely chic villa itself and the staff was super helpful...if you're going to be there, this is absolutely the best place to stay...

Hi,

I found your web site and saw wonderful images of Tropea in Calabria. I looked at properties in the north (Liguria and Toscana) and anything that looks remotely nice and is close to the coast is beyond my reach. I then found several properties in Calabria and they all seem to cost peanuts compared to the north. I know Calabria is forgotten region of Italy but is there any other reason to see nearly tenfold difference in property values?

I actually admire your background and interest and always feel deprived with my profession.

Dear Michael,

...Just wanted to touch base, and let you know how much we enjoyed staying at your Villetta. It was a beautiful place and Giaio Tauro and Calabria were wonderful. We had a fantastic holiday and came home feeling relaxed and refreshed (not to mention tanned and full of wonderful pasta!)

...We had a slightly more relaxed day, spent building sandcastles on a beach near Briattico. Who knows, perhaps our paths will cross in Toronto? Stranger things have happened. We will be back home in January '05 and will have the same email address so feel free to drop us a line and perhaps we can get together to share a coffee or glass of wine.

For now, please accept our thanks, again, for helping us have such a wonderful holiday.

Dear Michele,

Sorry for not answering for your e-mail earlier but I am overloaded after my come back from holidays to normal lawyers duties.

We spent a beautiful time in your home treating it as our headquarter. We were in Schilla, Pizzo and other Calabria's small and close located towns and villages and we drove to Sicilly and visited Taormina. We found all of them beautiful and charming. Goia Tauro is not a tourists resort really but it didn't matter for us. The first it is well located , the second you have a good choice of beaches in close distance and a fantastic offer of trips. Your home is really modern, well equipment and all things which have been promised by you were on place. We spent nice time - that's true - but you want me to say truly how we eventually find your offer and villa. My feelings are following:

1) the house is dark and you live in artificial light so instead (or adding it) the candles in living room it could be more reasonable to attach normal ceiling lamp

With the best wishes to you and your wife Bo¿ena

Krzysztof Labe

The villetta is lovely - beautifully appointed, very comfortable and with all the comforts of home. We very much appreciated the air conditioning which worked very well and quickly.

Michael was incredibly thorough in the materials he sent prior to our trip and in ensuring every detail was taken care of. His CD of Italian music is wonderful and really added to the atmosphere as we drove through the Italian countryside.

As anglophones with no Italian whatsoever (we had a good phrasebook) we managed to make due. People were very helpful and friendly and worked with us to try to understand and be understood. However, don't expect many (hardly any) people to speak English, as you may in some more 'touristy' areas. Also (and Michael is very clear about this in his materials) Giaio Tauro is not a "pretty" or "picturesque" little Italian village, so don't expect this. Rather it is a pleasant small city that is near to some beautiful places and has a very nice beach of its own.

Overall, we had a lovely holiday and very much enjoyed being in an area that was not overrun with tourists but which had some very lovely towns and beaches to experience.

Hello Michele,

We arrived home late Tuesday night after a fun filled vacation in Italy.

The villa is all that you said it would be and exactly as shown in your website.

Pietro was wonderful and felt like one of the family after our trip to Plati, Sicily, Gerace, the tour of the olive oil factory, and meeting his wife and baby.

He was so helpful...of course Dom and Frankie speaking the language did help a lot. We tried to teach Pietro some more English...

Pina made us such a fabulous meal we wanted to bring her home with us. Her son was such a great helper and such a nice young man... We all had a wonderful evening. We didn't get the Menu's you mentioned but discussed the choices with Pina.

We also met your Uncle and bought several lovely pieces in his gift shop in the Galleria. Another gentleman from the Jewelry shop stopped and spoke to us although we didn't get to his shop.

Everyone in Gioia Tauro couldn't have been more helpful and I am sure we left an impression in this town. I'm don't think too many American's have been there.

It was a wonderful experience and we have given several of our friends your website address who were very impressed with the pictures of the Villa.

Cheers for now,

That is great news, thanks. I am glad you were able to find someone to rent the villa for that week (as if I were worred). Hope you had a great holiday weekend as well, and we look forward to booking the villa when we go on our official honeymoon.

All the best,

Once again, thank you for being so understanding in us canceling the villa reservations, and for passing along the job postings!

Be well, and keep in touch. We will let you know when we are ready to book the Villa!

Mr. Castaldo:

I have information that you have been forwarding to my friend Anne..I have mentioned how I wanted to travel to Reggio Calabria...she found you....fortunate for me...My parents were born in Italy..my mother, Reggio Calabria, my father, Conversano Bari. I remember my mother telling me how beautiful her village was, how blue the water was, about her family and how happy she had been growing up there..they were beautiful memories that she held close to her heart her entire life. My first trip to Italy was to Florence to attend my nephews wedding..Rome, Tuscany and Pisa were lovely and gave me a wonderful inquisitive "taste" of my roots and ancestory..I knew if and when I returned it would be to Southern Italy and to my parents homeland...Im interested in renting your villa ...I would appreciate if you would e-mail me with information that will enable me to finalize my vacation..what I have learned so far seems ideal. Im looking forward to every detail, I know it will be wonderful. Thank you, hope to hear from you. Respectfully

I found your website --- I just spent an hour showing my boyfriend how beautiful your villa is and the surrounding areas. I am motivated to spend the next year saving to come and stay in your villa in Italy. I have never traveled outside of the US and would love for my first trip to be to Italy. Will you please send me as much information as you may have available? I think two weeks would be a good amount of time to stay with you and explore!

Just wanted to send a note of thanks to you for everything. We had a great time on our trip. We just arrived back in the states yesterday late, so I have a ton of work to do here at my desk. I will get to your review form soon. There is one thing however, that isn't on the review form, and that is your cousin, Pietro. He was a great help to us and went above and beyond what would have been expected. We even got a late night tour of his "olive oil" factory at his house. After a few hours with him, we could even understand his English! (hahaha!) We took some pictures of him at his factory and when I get them online, I will send them to you and him. The whole southern Italy experience was very different. Takes a few days to get use to it, but then, you settle right in. Again, thanks for everything and look forward to the pics!

Dear Michele;

Firstly, we enjoyed our stay in Calabria very much, travelling out from Gioia Tauro literally every day, going to as many of the towns within a day's drive as we could, with also a day visit plus an over-nighter to Sicily.

...We made sure to get to the market on Monday mornings in Gioia, an excellent market which we enjoyed very much. Very good value we thought and a great place to stock up on supplies for the week. We also made great use of the small grocery store right around the corner, a very friendly owner and good prices. In fact we found the people in Gioia Tauro to be very friendly and helpful and in the greater region also. The fact that virtually nobody spoke English in the area was a bonus, it helped my Italian! Calabria is at present unspoiled... no doubt it will change as the area becomes more popular.

We enjoyed the amenities of Villetta Mimma Vittoria also...Pietro Pelligrino pointed out the airtight stove and the wood shed as well as the other methods of heating but we particularly enjoyed the wood stove. [the couches were moved around the wood stove] We were also very grateful to the younger Pietro who went to a lot of trouble in keeping us supplied with wood. The bedrooms and bathroom facilities and lighting are good... We concluded Gioia Tauro is not a tourist town and that has its own charms...the local people were happy to talk to us when we tried out our limited Italian.

We now have our slides back and are enjoying showing them to friends and re-living our adventures. Thanks for all the information and assistance, it was a great trip.

Regards,
MH

Last summer, I talked 3 beach friends into going to Gioia Tauro in April 2004. One friend had relatives in Sicily and so we made plans to visit them.
Michael you did a wonderful job with all the information you sent us. Francesco met us at the airport as planned and drove us to your villa. Pietro met us with the keys and explained everything about the house.
We had a perfect week. We even took the beach chairs to the town beach. We never rented a car and we were able to travel everywhere with the excellent train system in town. I hope to go back and bring my family to Gioia Tauro.

I must say that as a chronic traveler who has rented out many villas throughout Europe, the information, including the photos on the web-site, and level of service that you provide with your rental is outstanding. Often it is a headache going through a rental agency and I like to deal directly with the owner. Dear Michele....

I just found the web site for your amazing home in Gioia Tauro...I have never travelled to Italy, have friends who spend lots of time in Lucca and friends who are looking to buy a condo or apartment in Rome....and I am planning a 1 month trip in a year or so....

I want to have a very comfortable home to stay in when I am there....and after spending a lot of time on the Slowtrav site, and looking at and reading about various places, this yummy home caught my eye! The abundance of photos is totally cool....thank you for that! Most of the places I have looked at have 3 -4 photos, and do not really give me a feel for the place....this does, most definitely...

Would you please send me information, rates, closest airport...that sort of thing. I will not be able to travel for a year, but this looks like the closest thing to home I have seen, and I'm very interested in knowing more...

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me.

Dear Michele....

Thank you so much for your very informative reply to my e-mail.... I will be sure to be in touch when I have firmed up my plans....this looks like the perfect location ....your website is so amazingly good!

Hello there Micheal. Well, we've been talking about your
fabulous home to our friends - 2 of them have asked for the
website address because they would like to visit - perhaps
you'll hear from them, I hope so.

We have talked and we are all in agreement that we would
like to rent your property for minimum 2, possibly 3 weeks
in 2005. The timing hasn't been confirmed yet, though.
Right now we are considering May or September. As you know, May in Canada is quite lovely (all 4 of us are avid
gardeners, and don't know if we can leave our gardens for
that length of time). September seems the better month to
get away, but it's soooooo far away!!!! We'll keep in touch and as soon as we set some dates, we'll let you know.

I read your article in the slow travelers website. It is absolutely fascinating and very well written. It really makes me want to visit Calabria right now. Calabria is definitely at the top of our list of places we have to visit. I have always wanted to go to Southern Italy because my maternal grandmother was born in Messina, Sicilia. It was great for me to learn more about the history of the area. Thank you for sharing your article with us.

Hello Mr. Castaldo:
I just found the time to view your sight, having had the pleasure to stay at your home last year, with my family. I must say that in this case, " a picture is worth a thousand words"....The photo gallery does the home justice....No fake photo angles....This is the real thing. The home provided a very comfortable and elegant base for our visit to Calabria, and Gioia Tauro. I felt very "taken care of," since the information package provided to my wife and I made our trip much easier. The shops and restaurants in Gioia Tauro, as well as the surrounding communities were equally as wonderful.
Additionally, I felt that staying in a Villetta provided a much more pleasing alternative than a hotel, or bed and breakfast....I would do it again.
The beach and promenade of Gioia Tauro was quite European and private by day, and exciting in the evening. Very warm people...lots of smiles.
Thanks for providing me the opportunity to express my thoughts. Ciou!

Villetta Vittoria was an awesome treat during my stay in calabria. It is in walking distance to all emmenities and it is located centrally to the city of G.T. The residence was an uplifting experience. After a long day of sight seeing and lounging at the beach, I looked forward to return to my home away from home. The house is clean, equipped with the latest in everything, and very pleasant. The highlights of the home would have to be
the climatized control system (especially this past summer 38+ temp) and the oversized shower head. It was heaven. I recommend this home to anyone.

All I have to say is WOW. For my first trip to Italy this was quite an experience. The owner was very helpful actually more then that. Every detail was addressed. From the moment we stepped off the train we were met by the keyholder, a relative of the owner. Through out the week different family members would drop by just to see how we were. The people of Gioia Tauro were warm, friendly, and very interesting to talk to if we could manage. The villetta was very tastefully decorated and there were a lot of nice extras. The rain shower, fully funtional kitchen, and lots of windows and sky lights. We toured other cities while in Calabria and by the end of the week when we would arrive back in Gioia Tauro it felt like home. It feels like the "real" Italian destination. Rome and Vencie were nice, but I'd go back to Gioia Tauro in a heart beat. Thank you for a lovely trip.

What a beautiful villa and such a peaceful setting. You will enjoy the local flavor of Gioia Tauro and yet be within an easy drive of many exciting and spectacular places. Your host is very gracious and most helpful and you will get to know some of his family. You will leave knowning you have experienced something very special and will know what life is like for those who live in Calabria.

I apologize for sending this reply so very late. I have been out of the country briefly on business. Yes, we did end up reserving another rental. I need to tell you that it certainly was NOT because we feel there is anything you could be improving. On the contrary, I have never had the pleasure of communicating with a "landlord" that was as helpful, accommodating, and an absolute wealth of information as you have been. For us, it was a simple question of filling a two week slot in a manner that did not require that we switched locations.
In spite of the fact that we will not be exploring your region on this trip (we have decided on another country entirely) we have been absolutely delighted with the opportunity to learn a bit more about the south of Italy and please be assured - as soon as we feel we have some more time on our hands, we will make it a point to contact you again in the hopes of a future rental. We will be looking forward to that very much and we will most certainly recommend your home to anyone we run into who happens to be thinking about travelling to the south of italy. All the best,

Michele,

I would like to thank you for your help in getting the medication for Bob. He would have been much sicker had he not had the drugs (and unfortunately we would have to shoot him as we didn't want the vacation plans changed). Pietro was wonderful in helping out and bringing the pills to us. He is the most cheerful person and every time he came to the house he was singing and laughing. He is a good ambassador for the villa.

Your place is wonderful and has every convenience that any one needs on vacation. Bob and I made a very small decorating change to your home. The horseshoe over your front door is the wrong way up (most people hang it this way). It should always have the open end pointing up and not down. By having it pointing down it means your luck will run out. (I am Scottish and superstitious)

The area in the South is wonderful and particularly Scilla. Thanks again and if you are ever in Toronto please call me and we can all get together.

Villetta Mimma Vittoria is such a treat, even the fussiest guests will love it.

Totally renovated with spacious bedrooms, beautiful bathrooms, and a gourmet kitchen with all the bells and whistles. Washing machine was a bonus.I didn't get to use the fireplace.

I particularily loved the walk-in closet, comfortable beds, balcony off the master bedroom, kitchen and the luxurious linens and towels. What a treat- a glass of wine and a candle lit bubble bath!!! It was also spotless.

The house was extremely well-appointed and lovely to come home to at night after a day on the beach, or a day exploring.

The owner and the 'keyholder' went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We felt very spoiled.

There is so much to do in the area, and I found one week was not enough time, The drive down to Gioia Tauro from Rome is so beautiful plus it is also possible to fly into an airport much closer.

Gioia Tauro is a typical small Italian village and a short drive to the ferry to Sicily and some beautiful beaches.

If you are looking for something that is away from the crowds of tourists that hit Italy - this is heaven.

Parking on the street was never a problem and we walked everywhere once we arrived at the house.

Would I go back? In a minute. Would I recommend it to friends. Yes, Yes, Yes.

You arrive at the door of the villa and step from a typical Italian town into a contemporary New York loft.Every amenity you could possible require to make your stay an enjoyable experience is provided, down to the fabulous bathroom. After a busy day exploring Southern Italy the house is a welcome Spa like retreat. Stein & Ingrid Renolen, stayed for 10 days -
in Calabria - July 2003

Location
The townhouse (Villetta Mimma Vittoria) is in
the port village of Gioia Tauro… a real and
small town in southern Italy (Calabria). This is
not a worked up touristy-place, but probably
the closest you come to life in a quiet little
town. The house is very modern, with all
modern appliances. About one hour away, you
will find several beautiful beaches, and the
ferryboat to Sicily.
The narrow street where the townhouse is
located, can be a bit active at times, but just
keep a watchful eye….
Just a short walk away from the beach, gives
you the perfect location – if you either want to
check out the nearby towns, or go “beach-
combing”. Sicily is only an hour away –
included the 20 min. ferryboat ride!

There is a grocery store just around the corner
Several gelaterias are within walking distance.
Gioia Tauro is not the gourmet-capital of the
world, but you will find plenty of places to eat.
Please don’t go too fast, no one is in a rush in
GT! The best gelato is in Reggio Calabria on
the lungomare at Cesare.

We were surprised at the level of which the
house was rebuilt, giving us every possible
accommodation. Lovely bathrooms, nicely
tiled terra cotta floors, beautiful stainless steel
kitchen and ample dining area. One fabulous
master bedroom, and one regular sized
bedroom – both air-conditioned. The master
bedroom also includes a very cozy balcony –
perfect for a little espresso in the morning.

Brand new furniture, lovely dining table and
comfortable chairs. Even a nice stereo/TV – if
you want to chill with some cool music after a
hot day at the beach.

Great kitchen – most importantly, a quiet
washing machine.
New modern kitchenware, for every dish in the
cookbook.

Very hospitable and friendly owners. They
went out of their way to make you
comfortable. Onsite key-holder’s English
could be better, but I’m sure it will improve. In
the mean time, I suggest some Italian
language-lessons. Broadens your horizons…

We are sure to be back in Gioia Tauro! This is
probably the best vacation we’ve had in years.
We had booked hotels in Sicily – San Vito lo
Capo, but we hurried back to the laid back
Gioia, where we could decide how much of a
tourist life we wanted to have! Sitting down on
the beach, reading a book under the umbrella,
without feeling all crowded, or swarmed by
screaming children (and parents) was a perfect
situation!
Outstanding value. Also quite a nice shopping
area, where you are sure to get a bargain or
two.

Several beaches in the area are outstanding,
and all are under one hour’s drive—

The house itself was lovely--very modern, with all of the newest amenities. It was within an hour or so of several beautiful beaches, as well as the ferry to Sicily. So there was rarely a shortage of things to do.

The furniture was in good shape. It was new, just like everything else. It was very comfortable and very clean.

I was treated very well, both before and during my trip. The onsite person did not speak English, but we were able to communicate nonetheless. The person and his family were very accomodating, inviting me over for family dinner, and I truly felt like I was part of their family. This was perhaps the nicest part of my trip.

If you're looking for a laid-back vacation with several different beautiful towns within easy traveling distance, this rental is outstanding.

Several beaches in the area are outstanding, and all are within one hour--Palmi, Reggio Calabria, Tropea, Scilla, and the ferry to Sicily is only one hour away.

Recommended. Review by Steve Beninati from New York

2bed/2 bath home in Gioia Tauro, Calabria

When:
summer 2003, One week

Location:
We managed to find a delightful, very comfortable, affordable, and wonderfully furnished villetta in Gioia Tauro. Since we had rented a car, travel from Reggio Calabria airport was simple, and allowed us to park our car and walk in the town, if we chose to, or use our car for the 3 minute ride to Gioia Tauro's beach.
The town, (three-minute walk), had several restaurants, pastry shops, and many convenient stores in a small village setting.
Within 20 minutes in any direction, many interesting small towns, each with its own special set of "specialties" were quite enchanting.
The countryside, food and the genuine simple style of "technology free living," is evident with every turn. It seems that Gioia Tauro has not changed much in 50 years, except for cell phones.

Nearby Amenities:
All amenities were very convenient, even the train to other areas of Italy and Europe. If a car rental was not desired, one could rent a scooter for the 3 minute ride to the beach.

About the House:
The home was very modern, clean, and well appointed. Air conditioning was an added convenience, along with a washing machine.
All appliances and furnishings were new.

Garden:
There was a small area where one could sit in a privae "vico", or simply utilize the balcony in the master bathroom, for the morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine.

Furnishings
All excellent & very comfortable

Bedrooms/Bathrooms:
Very modern and well appointed with very well designed lighting.

Kitchen:
Modern, clean and roomy....Personally, I prefer to make reservations!

Problems or Bonuses:
Big bonus was that Castaldo provided a very complete information package for the weary traveler, with complete list of what to do and not to do, as well as information on the town, its history, and surrounding "to do" list.

Agency and Representatives: Bi-lingual & easy to deal with.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes....See below

Things to do in this area
The highlight of our trip was a week in the small village of Gioia Tauro, which served as our "home base" while we surveyed Reggio Calabria, and the surrounding villages. Within 20 minutes in any direction, many interesting small towns, each with their own special set of "specialties" were quite enchanting.
Sicily is a wonderful ferry ride from Calabria, and having a car allowed us to drive from Meson to Palermo. The ride can be made in 5 hours or a full day, if you allow yourself plenty of time for stops, and town touring and shopping. A must see is the town of St. Stefano di Camastra, the ceramic capital of Sicily. You are forced off the Autostrada, due to the construction under progress, and you end up on an extremely picturesque 2 lane road, driving mostly along the northern coast of Sicily.... and right throught the town of St.Stefano di Camastra....

I loved this house. First of all the town is lovely, beautiful homes and shops and a village square. Your house was so gorgeous and sparkling clean. I've never been in a rental with so many amenities, the marble stairway and the great cooks kitchen, even the bathrooms were amazing. Our bedrooms were comfortable, everything was built in, and I loved the little terrace in the master bedroom. We used the house as a launching pad for traveling all over Calabria and Sicily, but most of our great times were spent in the house at the dining table eating the most delicious pizza in Italy. We had a fabulous vacation. Thank you so much. We loved it. Sondra Webb

Hi Michele,

Your region certainly interests us. The quality of the fixtures and fittings was what attracted us to your house - as well as it's interesting 'history'. This is our first time in Italy as a family - I once skiied near Trento in my youth ! We have another holiday in May and six other weeks in the summer so who knows for then ...

Many thanks for the advice you have given us. We will certainly bear your place in mind for future travel. As frequent web site browsers worldwide I feel sure you will have no trouble renting out your place. It will particularly appeal to US travellers since the quality of the fittings is so high. UK travellers too go for high quality - nothing too basic as is frequently found in the Med.

Good luck and thanks again,
