| The apartment is on the top floor of a newer building. It is right across the street from the Golden Horn. The parkign lot is bordered by the old Byzantine sea wall. We enjoyed the neighborhood - it was a traditional, conservative area, in which we had an oppportunity to observe "real" life, rather than a tourist experience. The people in the area were friendly. Many small shops and the like. Across the street on the Golden Horn is a ferry station, where one can catch the ferry to the Galata Bridge, and if one wishes, then walk or take the tram to Sultanahmet or Galata. There are of course cabs always available. Nazan and Baris live one flight below and went out of their way to be hospitable and helpful: Nazan helped us at the Wednesday market in Fatih, and Baris gave us a driving tour of the city which included a stop at "Miniturk". They are both very kind and helpful, and we enjoyed our stay. We were traveling with our three children. There is even a neighborhood goat to be seen on the sea walls. I much preferred this experience rather than staying in the more heavily touristed areas. And again, it was no problem taking a cab or the ferry to the tourist areas. A bus does run by the apartment, both up the hill and along the Golden Horn, but we never quite figured out the schedule. |
