Last two weeks of October, 2008, Wags and I spent two wonderful weeks at the cabin. Hiking across the road in the National Forest, lots of reading and naps, cooking for the two of us, and just enjoying how Wags worked the ground around the cabin and over in the National Forest with his nose down and his tail wagging. (Did I mention that Wags is a hound?)

The cabin is terrific and as fully equipped as anyone could reasonably want. The new mattress on the bed kept calling me back even during the day and the weather was warm enough most of the time to sit on the front porch in the sun and read.

About half way through our first day, Wags discovered the basket of toys. He snuffled around, found a plush frog that squeaked when chewed and took it over to the couch. It was his for the rest of the time -- no need to second guess what he might like. As soon as he got his frog, I knew he was content.

Equipment note: In addition to the pots and pans under the coffee pot/toaster shelf, there are more in the drawer under the stove. Really an ambitious cook? The hardware store in New Market has an excellent collection of Lodge cast iron. Gave me an excuse to get a "very own" cast iron skillet.

Because I like to cook (Summer job in college for two summers had me cooking over open fires for a traveling camp of 5 adults and 18 boys, aged 14-18. And they all had hollow legs!) We only tried one eat out place (and used carry out there) -- the barbeque place half way up the hill from Luray, right at the big curve in the road -- and were singularly unimpressed.

Food Lions in Timberville, Mount jackson, and Luray were very good and staffed with very friendly people. The little grocery story in downtown New Market was also extremely friendly and had a pretty good selection of food. We tended to go to the Food Lions for their greater selection of fresh fruit and veggies.

Next door neighbor up the hill is very friendly and Wags and his dog exchanged barks each morning. Guy down the hill used a gas leaf blower both Sundays we were there -- imagine trying to blow leaves in October in a National forest! Talk about shoveling sand against the tide . . . .

Shot a bunch of pictures on a new digital and am about to teach myself how to download them, when i do, I'll send on to Nancy and let her edit and use at her discretion.

Our hostess, landlady, benevolent overseer ... has offered a wonderful place for two legged beings and their canines to recharge and relax. And yes, I did figure out how to use the key holder so i could get in.

We'll be back in 2009!!

I planned a surprise vacation for my girlfriends 30th birthday and it was just perfect. The cabin is very clean and well stocked with so many different things for the dogs. Nancy has made every effort to make everyone's stay perfect and I must say she has definitely gone above and beyond. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. It couldn't have been better! Thank you Nancy for everything.

My son and the dogs and I had a wonderful time. Zoey ran straight for the toys and Manny the doggy bed. They got to go for ice cream two different nights. And hiking on Lewis Falls Trail on Skyline Drive. My son and I also went to Endless Caverns. I needed to get away so bad and it was so relaxing there. Juanita Pierce

We had a very relaxing stay the weekend of May 16-17 2008. The place was very clean and very well decorated with the doggie stuff. It had everything a dog needs. THe dogs were very happy and roamed around the place like they were home. We were impressed with the doggie soap, toilet tissue, CD's and DVD's. We did have problems with the lockbox and I had problems letting down the futon. The place was very scenic and the people in town were nice.

Wow! We and Jake spent a week at the cabin and it was the most relaxing, restorative week we have ever had. Jake loved everything about the cabin, the woods, the doggie door, the toys, etc., etc. We loved the peace and quiet while there was lots to do only a few miles away. Local people we met were extremely friendly and welcoming. There isn't a better place to catch up with yourself and leave the stressors of everyday life behind. We will be back - hopefully for 2 weeks. Thanks for creating this "haven."

Chris and I and Rodney (our 4 year old Dachshund) would like to thank you for making our stay at Paws and Reflect a wonderful experience. This is the first vacation we took Rodney with us and he did great. He was so happy and relaxed.

We really enjoyed the hiking in Shenandoah Park and the many miles of scenic driving through the park.

The cabin had everything we could want- lots of toys to keep Rodney occupied- I think he brought them all out of the toy basket in the first hour of our stay. He really enjoyed the squeaky toys.

The location is perfect for a quiet vacation and the hot tub was a perfect way to relax after a day of hiking.

We hope to visit again soon.

Best Regards

Hi Nancy,

What a nice little place you have here. Our crew (Beemer the EBD and Bison the neopolitan mastiff) thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We love all the nice dog touches you have throughout the cabin. We are happy to have Bison in the cabin with us as he is the first mastiff to be vacationing here. We would be delighted to come back again next summer. Thanks.

When it came time to actually start planning our wedding and honeymoon, I told my sister that all I want is a cabin in the middle of nowhere with my husband and our dogs. That is exactly what I got and I couldn't be happier with Paws & Reflect. This place is absolutely beautiful. We went and saw the caverns, shopped in town at the little stores -- mostly "Basket Case". That little store is so awesome. Ate out, cooked in and just had a blast all week. Neither of us are looking forward to leaving here -- we love it! Definitely plan on making annual trips here! Thank you so much for making our honeymoon special with the roses, champagne & glasses! Also the candle & towels! That was so nice.

Chief, our setter/saluki mix had fun barking at his reflection. Liebchen, our german shepherd had fun with the doggie door and they both had fun wrestling and running around all week. And both had great naps on the doggie couch and watching (barking at) the leaves blowing around! They are goofy!

The week has been perfect. We couldn't have asked for a better way to spend our honeymoon. Thank you again.

Hopefully this was just the first of many visits. We had wonderful weather on Friday and Saturday so got in 2 hikes -- a small one from the Massanutten Visitors Center and then a longer one on Saturday which almost did Ann in because she is so out of shape! Sophie loved the visit and slept in her own bed in the master bedroom, except when it was time for the morning wake-up call -- hard to sleep with a 64 lb German Shepherd on your chest! The hot tub was very welcome after our hikes. A nice relaxing mini-vacation!

After seeing the cabin before it was finished, I couldn't wait to visit, and finally we made it! What a gorgeous place - even more beautiful with the golden turning leaves. Had plans to spend more time "doing" things, but so enjoyed snuggling in the cabin, they never materialized. Did have a wonderful drive to West VA, to the Lost River State Park. Route 12 is a gorgeous but winding road. Really enjoyed the fall colors. Thank goodness for the hot tub -- much needed after the stressful leaf-watching!

Oslo is almost 13, and made good use of the comfy couches and plush toys. And after the first night of a way too crowded bed, he actually loved the matching doggy bed, but was loathe to admit it.

Thank you Nancy for creating such a wonderful place. It's a great place for seeing the sites, or good old R&R. Can't wait to return.

This was our first time to Paws & Reflect. Max had fun checking everything out when we got here. His favorite spot was the ottoman. He would lay up there and play with his cow hoof. Max enjoyed laying at the door while mom & dad really enjoyed the hot tub both evenings. Max, mom & dad enjoyed a day on the Skyline Drive on Saturday. The weather was beautiful (low 60s). The leaves were very pretty also. Max made friends with a couple of dogs along the Skyline Drive. We enjoyed eating at the Southern Kitchen on Friday and Johnny Appleseed on Saturday night. The cabin was very nice! Max felt right at home with mom & dad on the bed at night. We especially enjoyed the CDs for dogs. We listened to them both Saturday and Sunday while we were getting ready. We also enjoyed watching "Bewitched". This was Max's first time away from home and he did really well. (He's 14 months old.) I am so glad there is a nice relaxing place that your dog can come and vacation with you. We are already talking about making plans to come back next year.

Thanks Nancy for providing such a beautiful and relaxing place!

This was our 2nd time here and we loved it even more. Frosty just turned 12 years old on September 24th, so this trip was partly for his birthday. He's had some health problems since June and we treasure each and every moment of quality time with him. This beautiful, tranquil environment was therapeautic for us all. We all seem rejuvenated from the walks, hot tub, relaxing music and peacefulness of the surroundings. We played Dog-opoly and Frosty drank from he new favorite thing - the Chill-A-Bowl! We made note of many of the unique dog products here to order them for Frosty's Christmas presents. Thanks Nancy for providing the perfect setting for our family. Wish we could stay here year-round!

Our second time here: we did some favorite things - hiking the GW National Forest, going to the Southern Kitchen for take-out, soaking in the hot tub (me), playing with her stuffed loon to the accompaniement of "Squeakey Deakey" (Giselle) - and also tried a couple new ones -- Route 11 Potato Chips and the State Arboretum. The cloudy weather helped me get a fair amount of writing done. We did see the local bear while hiking near the Massanutten Visitor Center, so definitely bring a whistle or bells if you go hiking there, and keep your eye on your dog. When it was too foggy and rainy up on Skyline Drive, we had a pleasant walk around Lake Arrowhead in Luray.

Definitely plan to be back next spring, and when the mountain laurel blooms . .

We had such a great time again and plan to make this an annual event, so can we book for next year now, same week?

On Bobs birthday we went to Staunton, well worth the visit, beautiful houses to see, we did a self guided tour, I left the brochure their for other viisitors and wrote it up in the guest book.

We went canoeing this time, with Molly on the Shenendoah with Shenendoah River Outfitters, a tip from another guest in the book. We spent 31/2 hours and 8 miles on the river. Molly kept jumping out to splash in the water when we grounded. Our steering was not to good, but we got better and plan to go and have a go closer to home without Molly to see if we can do better.

It was great that the road has been widened since last year.

Thanks again for a wonderful stay, the place was spotless and ship shape when we arrived.Becky does a great job.

We had a very nice stay. Hiked three mornings and rested three afternoons!

And...saw a medium sized black bear!!!! Just as I was taking one last look around before heading out Monday morning (around 8:45) I saw the bear slowly lumbering up the front hill toward the neighbor's cabin, about halfway between your cabin and the road! The dogs saw it too and started barking (luckily they were in the car) and by the time I made sure car doors were closed, the bear was out of sight. Pretty wild!

Thank you for building such a beautiful cabin for all your guests. Our Mom & Dad told me & my brother we were going on a vacation but we had no idea! We had so much fun! We especially liked the doggie CDs (they are so much better than the music Mom & Dad brought). We loved all the beds, too. We had fun hiking & playing in the stream at Lion’s Tail. We even got our first ever ice cream cone at the Dairy Bar – yummy! Thank you for adding the human touches for our mom & dad. They really liked the hot tub but it doesn’t compare to the cool water bed we had! Humans are so weird sometimes. Mom & Dad like the space savers – whatever that means!? Thanks again! We hope to be back soon!

We thoroughly enjoyed a long weekend here celebrating our 4 year wedding anniversary. The cabin was so cozy and clean we liked all the cute doggy décor, right down to the paw print toilet paper! We had a relaxing weekend of watching movies, hiking and motorcycle riding. Oklahoma was hyper-stimulated by all the big windows and sights and sounds of the beautiful woods. She enjoyed playing find-the-tennis ball in the woods, as well as all the inside toys. We will definitely be back, hopefully with another couple to share in the fun. Thanks for sharing your pet-friendly getaway with us!

What a great, relaxing getaway. The weather was hot and humid, but beautiful. It’s great to have found a place where dogs aren’t just tolerated, but welcomed with open arms. Mason loved the small sofa – he has epilepsy and his back legs are too weak and trembling for him to jump on the regular sofa like he used to – so he was thrilled to have a sofa that was “schnauzer sized”. He also liked the screened porch, but was a little wary of the doggy door. I took him on the Lion’s Tale trail and the Massanutten Story Trail - each about .5 miles. These are both great short trails for older dogs – shaded and lots to smell!
I left him at the cabin and went on the Waterfall Mt Loop Trail which starts at Massanutten Visitor Center (8.3 miles) and would NOT recommend it. The views weren’t great, there are some steep descents and a long, steep ascent (which I wouldn’t mind if there had been a view at the end); the last 2.5 miles was walking back down FDR 274 with lots of cars coming by and some blind curves that made me worry about getting hit. In the future, I’ll probably drive a little further to Skyline Drive and hike the trails there.
Had a great time and can’t wait to come back again. Thanks Nancy for sharing your beautiful, thoughtfully designed cabin!

This is such a wonderful cabin to retreat to with my 4-legged pal. The dog couch and back porch were a hit with Gryffin, as were all the dog toys. The hot tub was a hit with me and I love the roads coming up to the cabin! I got to see what my Subaru Forester would do! The weather was wonderful – no rain, 70s during the day and 60s at night (just right for a rest in the hot tub).
We walked a few short trails around the visitors center and off of 274 – across from the visitors center (it’s a 10 mile gravel road with several hiking trails – you can follow it to 675, down to Luray and back up all.) Thanks for a wonderful time.

What a wonderful place to spend a weekend! The cabin was well equipped for humans and canines. My PBVG just loved the doggie couch, toys and the screened in back porch.

The cabin is located near walking trails and wildlife is in abundance. We saw a group of deer when we arrived at the cabin. You can hear and see all kinds of wildlife in the George Washington National Forest right across the street from the cabin. One late night we even heard a bobcat!

Thank you Nancy for making your wonderful getaway cabin available to others who like to travel with their best furry friends!

It was wonderful to have a vacation that focused on our “kids”. If only the weather was a bit more cooperative they would have loved to go for more “walkies”. Sydney & Simon fought over the large nest dog bed. If one got up – the other pounced right in to take their place. Thanks for the nice 4th of July decorative touches.

Just came back from a weekend at Paws & Reflect and had a great time! With me was Legend (10 year old Dobe), Opal (8 year old Dobe), Taz (15 year old German Pinscher) and Pin (blind 14+ year old Min Pin). After a rocky start with severe weather, it kind of settled into a on/off rainy weekend, which was perfect. We had time for short dog walks in between showers and then back to the couch for a book/movie for me and bully sticks for the kids!
All the dogs loved exploring the yard around the house, including Pin who is quite fearless! A very relaxing weekend, just what I was needing!
I can see why you require 4-wheel drive, although with the 4-wheel drive, even with all the rain, it was no problem getting up the hill. I look forward to returning again! Thanks Nancy, wonderful place!!!

What a wonderfully restorative getaway! We got into a lovely routine of sleeping late, going hiking (Byrd’s Nest#4 in Shenandoah NP, the orange-blazed trail at Massanutten Visitor’s Center), picking up fried chicken and pie at Southern Kitchen, and returning blissfully tired to the cabin. Then a glass of wine and a soak in the hot tub for me and a cozy curl-up on one of the comfy dog beds for Giselle.
We both loved the doggy CDs – the second time I played “Squeaky Deakey,” Giselle went and got her stuffed loon and obligingly squeaked it on cue! I’d like to come back in the fall and work more on my novel.

We had a lovely time just hanging out and did some hiking too. Thanks to the guest who left the book on easy day hikes – we hiked Hawkesbill Summit, took about a mile detour on a side trail and came back to the cabin and crashed! Had beautiful weather for hiking although of course the dogs thought it was way too hot (upper 60s). I’m now inspired to get back into hiking again.
The cabin is gorgeous and superbly organized down to the last detail. We appreciate all the doggie touches. Bruno even slept in the doggie couch after I took the cushion out. Hope my pictures turn out! The dogs also had a fine time chasing sticks in the back woods. I stayed out with them and they didn’t stray too far from the cabin. This is a perfect home base for exploring the Shenandoah. I hope to be back – next time for a longer stay!

Oh what a great place to have a doggie vacation! The girls (Harley 10 yo yellow lab & Gracie ~5 yo yellow lab x)g ive it 2 paws up! Gracie made herself right at home immediately by testing all the dog (and human) beds. Harley liked sniffing around indoors and out. There were lots of sticks to chase and animal scents to smell.
Paws & Reflect is a great location to travel with 2 big dogs because it’s not that far away [from Northern Virginia], so the girls were actually good for the car ride (and to think they thought they were going to the vet!) Thanks, Nancy! We look forward to returning!

"We spent a wonderful weekend with Frosty. Frosty is eleven years old and a handsome buff cocker spaniel. We basically relaxed and enjoyed the nice weather and time with Frosty. We watched Bewitched and Monster-In-Law. Frosty really enjoyed the CD’s for dogs as well. We played them while we were all here. We did not leave him. He went everywhere. The doggy ramps were cool to get up and down. Frosty must be where we are so this helped him for the couch and bed. We went for a nice ride on Skyline Drive – beautiful scenery. "Clearly our pups (Bree-Anne, Kelli, Kodiak, & Baxter) were in doggie heaven. Did not wake us up until nearly 8am . . . much preferred to the 5:30-6am wake up call at home. Who can blame them – two plush doggie beds, a doggie futon, a doggie couch. Though the weather during our stay was less than desirable – it gave the pups more cushion time, the humans more hot tub time, and all of us much needed time together in front of the fire. Thanks Nancy for a wonderful idea and a wonderful vacation!"

"Nancy,

Tucker (natural eared boy) figured out the dog door in minutes and was in and out with sensory overload. Our female (Utay) found comfort lounging on the couches. Turns out the couches and beds were low enough for her not to need the steps or ramps. My wife was a little apprehensive about the back fence (shorter than expected) since our boy has some agility training. Thankfully he never realized that if he could jump from ground level up to the dog door platform that he could have cleared the fence . . .

NOTE: I wholly support your requirement for 4x4. As I mentioned before I spent most of my career working as an engineer with Land Rover and because of which have had the privilege of professional training in off-road driving. I have done countless trips in a number of different countries and have seen a lot of trails, even with this confidence, the "final ascent" to the cabin was a daunting task for our Subaru when fully loaded with dogs, food, clothes and humans during a light rain. If anyone has an objection to you requiring a 4x4 vehicle, have them talk to me. It should be a must.

Kind regards,
Russ"

It seems that everyone who has stayed at Paws & Reflect is all in agreement as to what a great place it is - and, of course, it is!

I just wanted to add that you don't have to be part of a "couple" (or "family") to enjoy everything it has to offer. Bailey and I went as a "pack of two" and had just as wonderful a time as everyone else who has stayed there.

If you want a nice relaxing time with your canine companion(s), don't let being the only human stop you. There's plenty to do (or not to do) on your own.

"We are so glad we found this place. What a perfect place to celebrate our 4 year wedding anniversary. And, the pups and Kyle loved that they got to go along. The dogs were so excited as soon as we got here, testing out all the dog beds and toys. Barkley especially loved the little doggy couch and bother were also big fans of the doggy door.

Dave and I loved the hot tub and appreciated the charcoal grill too! Kyle didn’t do much this year but says he’ll be running around with the dogs next year when we come back!

Thank you so much for making the place so dog friendly. We’ll all look forward to next year.

P.S. Barkley was overly enthusiastic with some of the dog toys, so we bought you a few replacements."

Paws and Reflect is really true to its' name. We had such a restful and relaxing time here. The cabin is cleverly designed with everything a human and a doggie could want.

The humans, two of us, particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet, the hot tub(we want one of these),the screened in porch, the CD player,(we took some of our own CD's which we listened to every evening, very relaxing while in the hot tub) the trails nearby and the beautiful countryside and quaint towns, aswell as the wonderful doggie decorations and memorabilia the owner has made to make this truly a vacation for doggie lovers.

The Doggie, Molly, a 2 year old chocolate Lab particularly enjoyed the toys, the flashing ball in particular, (have to purchase one of these for her)
the paddling pool(what Lab wouldn't)and the trails we found where there was water to paddle in. She made herself at home immediately, she also succeeded in using the doggie door.
She was also attracted to the duck in the hot tub which was of course off bounds.

The nearby visitor center is a good place to get trail maps, but beware some of the trails are steep.

Endless Cavern staff were very helpful and the shop is worth a visit if you want crystals at good prices. Alas doggies are not allowed in the caverns.

Doggies not allowed at the Battlefield either.

We found a very pleasant walk in Old Town Luray where you can walk on a paved trail by the creek,(less rocky and more flat than the trails) or sit on a bench to have a picnic or a sub you might have just bought from the local subway.

Since we don't tend to eat out, we ate at the cabin every night, we found everything we needed in the well equipped kitchen.

We loved the design of the whole place, so well done and all the instructions and information were easy to follow. Everything has been well thought out.

We wish we could go every weekend! We will return as soon as possible!

"Hi Nancy

We all had a GREAT time . . . I can’t imagine how you found so many dog “decorations” etc. . . It was like being kids in a candy store . . . The dogs especially loved the “barking ball” and the red flashing ball and the tug-a-war toy. We basked in the hot tub several times. The dogs AND the people loved the dog door. The dogs caught on after the first demo. We are all sad to be back home and not have one.

The 2nd car we took was not 4WD. We just needed the space so thought we’d try it and if it couldn’t get up we’d find some public place to park it down at the bottom. Well, that’s what happened. It just couldn’t make that last hill with all the loose gravel. After watching that car not make it, I must say I was quite impressed the way my 4WD just purred right up the hill! This was the first time I have actually seen it put to the test. Now I see what you mean about 4WD!!!

Thanks so much for “having us”. We will be back!!"

We just got back from the cabin and had a wonderful time! Our dogs felt right at home very quickly and loved the fact that they could look out all of the windows easily. Troop and Casper tried out all 3 beds and made me get all the toys out of the toy basket so they could look (they are both 12 and don't play with toys much any more). We really enjoyed the fact that everything was new and untouched but I think the dogs would have enjoyed some more doggy smells!

We went to Endless Caverns (very interesting) and drove home via Route 211 through Luray. I would thoroughly recommend this route if you have time.

It was great being higher up and cooler and I really enjoyed the absence of poison ivy! You gotta try this place!

All I can say is OMG!!!! this is a wonderful get-a-way ... Kayla, our flat-coated retriever, was in love the instant she got there. We had all the conviences and comforts of home. I have to say that we will come back again and again. Make sure you take advantage of the full service kitchen! We brought food with us and were able to sit back and enjoy the sounds of nature and calm on the screened in porch. Nancy has thought of everything to make your life easy and relaxing! There are lots of things to do in the area if you get "cabin fever" and want to roam around ... Luray Caverns, antique shopping, civil war battlefields and museums, etc. My advice do a little home work and plan a few things out to get the most out of your experience. And a note on the 4WD ... get one it does make the drive easier, we had to drive seperately and my husband drove my Honda Civic ... he made it, but had to get a running start twice coming up the hill. Going down was a snap though.

If you have any hesitation that your furry friend will not enjoy him/herself, be assured that they will love it. There are smells galore around the cabin to discover, there are three luxurious doggie beds to relax and rejuvinate upon, music to set their ears at ease ... Kayla had the time of her life. And, the best part ... she was with us!! Enjoy your vacation and be sure to take a day or two to Paws & Reflect!!!

Bailey and I have been watching the cabin progress from Nancy's original idea to where it is today. It is very exciting to see her dream come true! It will truly be a GREAT place for dog lovers and their faithful canine companions. We can't wait to sign up ourselves!
